Minneapolis heat index to hit 111 degrees today

It'll feel like it's 111 degrees this afternoon. Try not to die.

​Minneapolis is under siege by a severe heat wave that's dangerous to pets, kids, and the elderly and will probably make everyone else feel like an animal, a child, or an old person.

The fever that's scorched the state since Sunday morning is part of a solar assault that's burning up the whole Midwest. Yesterday, the high temperature for the city was 93 degrees, but the heat index -- the "feels like" reading -- hit a high of 108, and stayed in triple digits the whole damn day.

Today's going to be even worse.
The NWS says you can look forward to a heat index maximum of 111 degrees today. That's scary hot, and without much breeze, the only relief Twin Cities residents will get comes in the form of thunderstorms in the morning and cold beer in the evening.

The NWS has put an excessive heat warning in place until Wednesday night.

.DUE TO THE EXPECTED PROLONGED PERIOD OF THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY... AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR MUCH OF CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN MINNESOTA... INCLUDING THE TWIN CITIES... THROUGH 9 PM ON WEDNESDAY. 

AFTERNOON HEAT INDICES WILL EXCEED 105 DEGREES FOR SEVERAL HOURS EACH AFTERNOON... WITH OVERNIGHT LOW TEMPERATURES ONLY FALLING INTO THE MIDDLE 70S TO LOWER 80S.

THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A DANGEROUS SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE LIKELY. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS... STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM... STAY OUT OF THE SUN... AND CHECK UP ON RELATIVES... NEIGHBORS... AND PETS.

It's so hot, even the nocturnal are going to be sweating it out.

The weather is threatening news for baseball fans: The Twins have a makeup game with the Cleveland Indians scheduled for 12:10 this afternoon, putting anyone who buys a ticket right under the sun for about three hours. Maybe there's a special for "Come to the game on the bus, leave in an ambulance."

For the less adventurous, sitting by the air conditioner vent is not a recognized sport, but it should be.
