Smith held a press conference this morning in New York to announce the lawsuit.
Minnesota pastor Bradley Dean Smith -- a.k.a. Bradlee Dean -- announced earlier today he is suing MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow and Minnesota Independent writer Andy Birkey.

The civil suit, filed today in Washington, D.C., claims that Maddow and Birkey defamed Smith by taking an excerpt from his radio show out of context, and asks for more than $50 million in damages.

Sporting a Twins t-shirt and baseball cap, Smith made the announcement at a press conference in New York City this morning. Village Voice reporter Nick Pinto -- formerly a staff writer for City Pages -- was there to capture the event on tape.

Both the Minnesota Independent and MSNBC are standing by their reporters, denying allegations that they defamed Smith. Read their full statements here.
