The unnamed cyclist got away without serious injuries, but the incident is yet another example that even the country's most bike-friendly communities have their issues.
According to St. Paul police, the cyclist was hit near the corner of Maryland Avenue east and Prosperity Avenue north around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday.
Three guys beat him until things went black, he later told police. When he woke up, his bike, clothes, shoes, and wallet were gone.
The victim was forced to walk back home in only his underwear and catch a ride from a family member to the hospital, where police met up with him.
Despite the three-on-one beating, the victim had "no visible injuries" at the hospital, says John Keating, public information officer for St. Paul police. As of now, police are without suspects.
While bike muggings are far from unheard of, Keating says it's an unusual crime for the area.
"I haven't seen anything that looks similar to this," he says.
