Red Wing tries to get "Wigger Wednesday" racism lawsuit thrown out

Red Wing doesn't see what's so bad.
The school lawsuit that's making a fool out of white kids who tried to dress, talk, and act black shouldn't even be heard in court, according to the Red Wing School District.

Earlier this week, Red Wing School District's attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit filed last month by Quera Pruitt, a former Red Wing High School student who alleged that the school's "Wigger Wednesday" was a racist activity, and that it was upheld by teachers and administrators.

In the district's motion to dismiss, it was forced to use a bit of unfortunate phrasing, asking that the suit be thrown out "with prejudice." Well, of course, guys -- that's the whole point!

This is exactly the kind of thing that white people always do when you sue them.

According to Pruitt's suit, what was once "Tropical Day," when kids dressed in island gear and Hawaiian shirts, took a pretty grim turn in 2009 when dozens of kids -- every one of them pasty white -- started dressing up like black "gangsta" students.

texas wigger.jpg
This Texas "wigger" isn't so bad, right, guys?
Apparently their throwback jerseys, tilted Yankees hats and gang colors didn't sit right with an actual black person, and Pruitt asked that the 60-70 kids participating be forced to remove all the offensive dress. They were, but she's since alleged that the whole thing was so offensive it created a bad environment for her education.

When City Pages first reached out to Pruitt's lawyer Joshua Williams, he was pretty blunt about the whole thing.

"To her, and frankly to me, 'Wigger Day' is the same thing as 'Nigger Day,'" Williams said.

Pruitt filed suit against the school's principal, the district's superintendent, and the entire district, alleging she'd been forced to go to school in an environment hostile to black kids. Pruitt's lawsuit demanded $75,000 in damages for emotional distress.

Now that it's been forced to answer for the day in queestion, Red Wing School District doesn't deny that Wigger Wednesday took place: It just says Pruitt should, essentially, chill out.

The district filed a supplement in support of its motion to dismiss, alleging, among other things, that Pruitt hasn't proven that teachers and administrators knew that this thing was racist.

[P]laintiff asserts similarly conclusory statements that, at the time of "Wigger Day" school officials were aware of its racist nature and that it would likely create a racially hostile environment ... Moreover, plaintiff‟s allegations do not establish racial harassment "so severe, pervasive or objectively offensive it deprived African-American students of the educational opportunities" provided by the District.
Okay, so, there's two points here. First, how could any teacher know that "Wigger Day" was racist, with all of them being white people from Red Wing? And second, even if it was a little racist, was it so racist that it, like, bothered this girl?

Beyond that response, school superintendent Karsten Anderson pointed out in the motion to dismiss that he wasn't actually on the job at the time of Wigger Day. Even still, he's now put in the sticky situation of saying he had nothing to do with Wigger Day, but there's nothing all that bad about it anyway.

After graduating in 2010, Pruitt moved to Little Rock, Arkansas. Though her civil complaint failed to point this out, there are few statements about racism in a given area more damning than this: In order to get away from small town Minnesota's racism, she moved to Arkansas.

the word wigger itself is used to make fun of white "wannabees" who wish they were gangsters. it's a play on words that's describes the actions and attire of dumb white kids who like pretending they're something that they're not. in the long and the short of it, this word represents white kids... not black kids and should be thrown out of court.

though a few days of suspension might help straighten out some of the intolerant white brats a bit.... the difficulty of the situation is that you can't always tell which kids are racists, and which one's are in it for innocent fun.

remember when we we're kids and it was ok to dress like indians for halloween (people back then knew the difference between racism and playful gestures). sure this took place in a highschool, and it wasn't Halloween... but just because your in highschool does't make you an adult. let's not forgot that kids are stupid, and "stupid is as stupid does". if every one sued everyone every-time they did something stupid we'ed spend 3/4 of each day in court litigation.

Having a daughter that is black and attended the school. It was not an issue for us. She says some of the black students called it "wigger day". It was suppose to be wanksta day which means white gangsta. Some were even trying to turn that around and make it negative. All of this stuff is even expressed in music they listen too. Yes, even the white students listen to hip hop and adopt the culture. Only the ignorant found it offensive. She wasn't the only black person in the school. Where are all the people backing her on paper? Not just saying they do so. Some of them wouldn't be viable witnesses. Not to say there isn't racism in Red Wing to be experienced. Its there, just be smart about what you chose to stand on. Not all blacks agree with the way they were dressed being black. It doesn't fit my and others I know discription. Throw it out!

What is a "wigger?" You ALL know. It is not a nice term, is it? Usually seen as a "wanabee--what?"

So...kids show up at school and JOKE about being "wiggers." Would those SAME kids do that at NORTH High school? Doubtful. They knew they could get away with it. Now, many of these kids are YOUR children, so naturally "Little Johny and Sissy were just playing."

OK, funny...but, what if YOU were black and NOT someone who acts like an "-igger"?Can you see where that MIGHT be offensive?

the $75,000 is to make sure the SCHOOL and those in charge are REMINDED to be a bit more "sensitive" to others.Red Wing? What do YOU people know about diversity out there anyway, right? Who cares, right? Get over it, right?

TRY living on the other side.

What makes this racist? They are making fun of gangsters not a race.

They didn't call it Gangsta Day, they called it, "Wigger Day," as in white nigger. If it had been "Gangsta Day," this would have been in poor taste but not racist.

Tired of Greedy "Victims"
Tired of Greedy "Victims"

1. This story gets presented as though "Wigger Day" was a school-sanctioned or offical event. It wasn't.

2. If a bunch of white kids drive to school with n-word laced gangsta rap blaring, is that a hostile environement?

3. A hostile environment claim generally requires a contemporaneous report and a failure to address or remedy the enviornement. Here, there does not seem to be any contemporaneous report by the alleged victim. Rather, it is an after the fact money-grabbing lawsuit.

4. There is no indication whatsoever that she moved back to Missouri because of this incident. Sloppy reporting on the part of the City Pages.

What would you say if the student at North High school, for example, showed up at school claiming, "arrogant, fat white-boy" day?

Would you "feel like a victim?"

Really?
Really?

You've been sued for personal injury so may times you are "tired" of the "greedy victims" what do you do for kicks, invite your nieghbors over for coffee to put them through sever emotional distress?

Re: That last one. You're right, there's no evidence whatsoever she moved back to Missouri because of this incident. That's because she moved to Arkansas. Thanks for reading, though.

I think that's in their mission statement.

Perhaps you could have explained what the term "with prejudice" means when used in the legal context.  It simply means that, once dismissed, the lawsuit could not be brought again at a later date.

I meant with nooses, I was so upset I could barely type...

If you are so upset about a non-issue you make a type-o, I'd hate to see what you'd do if something that actualy mattered happened.

Really?
Really?

A blant display of racism at a public school goes unpunished by teachers, and you think that's a non-issue? If I thought all white people were ignorant, meth-head trash, I would be racist, if I then went to school pretending to be white based on my racist beliefs, I would create a hostile environment. See how that works?

flitandersen

Suppose you thought all white people were completely ignorant of, and insensitive to, "black" issues? Would THAT make you a racist?

Really?
Really?

If the kids dressed in white sheets and walked around the nooses would the teachers have known that was racist? Are the kidding?!?
