Chris Cook, suspended, is asking you to suspend your disbelief.
Chris Cook is already in legal trouble. Now the Vikings cornerback might be in financial trouble.

After Cook was arrested and charged on some pretty nasty accusations from the cops and county attorneys, the third-string secondary member is being told do pass "GO," do not collect $200, and do not put on that purple-and-gold until you're out of the prison-colored orange jumpsuit.

Actually Cook's out of Hennepin County Jail, and has his court date today. Cook's already given a hint at what his legal strategy, tweeting both a sincere-ish apology... and also, you know, that there might be a perfectly good explanation for why his girlfriend had a bloody nose and hemorrhaging in her eye.

The Vikes waited to act until the charges came down against Cook. Prosecutors' description of the felony charge for domestic assault by strangulation leaves little to the imagination: According to the criminal complaint, Cook's girlfriend of 10 months was choked, punched, and choked again, and was found to have injuries consistent with that kind of attack.

Having read that, the Vikings had little choice but to disassociate themselves with such a character. Last night, the team released the following statement:

"Today's allegations against Chris Cook are very disturbing and disappointing. At this time, he is suspended without pay from the team while we continue to gather information regarding the situation. We will have no further comment until the appropriate time."

For Cook, it seems, the "appropriate time" to comment is right after you get out of the jailhouse. Cook took to Twitter yesterday, first sending out a message that indicates there might be an interesting tale that spins Saturday morning's events in his favor.

There's always two sides to a story!!

While that tweet allowed serious fans of the Vikings, and/or domestic violence, to offer their support to Cook, the next one is a moment of contrition not seen since Wily Brandt knelt down and wept in the Warsaw Ghetto.

My apologies to the fans! Vikings ownership, coaching staff, my teammates and friends and family!!

Here's some pretty sick, serious bait for you social scientists out there: Cook's first tweet, the defiant one, was retweeted 80 times. The second, the one where he says he's sorry -- to everyone but his girlfriend! -- was retweeted 56 times.

Cook is scheduled to appear in court today. So, maybe all those retweeters can rush down there and get autographed jerseys or mugshots.
