Paul Hill is charged with second-degree assault for the shooting.
Paul Hill is known as the proud father of Tayler Hill, Minnesota's all-time leading scorer for girls high school basketball.

Now, Paul Hill is going to be even better-known, but for all the wrong reasons.

Hill was arrested and charged late last month for an incident at a YWCA on East Lake Street, in which the 45-year-old got into an argument with another man. Arguing turned to shoving, and the shoving led to shouted threats.

"I got something for you!" Hill is alleged to have said, the Star Tribune reports.

Ten minutes later, Hill's car pulled up next to the other man outside the YWCA. Witnesses saw Hill holding a gun, which he pointed out the window and fired.

Hill's shooting missed the other man, but his action wasn't missed by witnesses. Police obtained a search warrant for Hill, and spoke with his wife, who told police that Hill owned a handgun. Hill does not have any permit for a handgun, according to the police search warrant.

Hill turned himself in on October 5, the Star Tribune reports, and spent the next five days in Hennepin County Jail. The YWCA told the Star Tribune that Hill has been banned from all of its facilities.

For the shooting, Hill is charged with second-degree assault. He has no previous criminal record.

Tayler Hill, now a junior at Ohio State University, was a standout at Minneapolis South, where in 2009 she set the all-time state career scoring record.

Last year, in her sophomore season at OSU, Hill was a major contributor for the Buckeyes: The 5-foot-10 guard was named to the All-Big Ten Defensive team and the All-Big Ten Tournament team.

Paul Hill coached his daughter on several AAU teams, including one in 2009 which was ranked No. 1 in the country, according to the Star Tribune.

You are innocent until proven guilty, at least they were at one time in this country.  It is only fair to reserve judgement until all the facts are presented to make an informed decision.  Since I believe that, I am sad to see the YWCA ban him before the court decision is made.  There is virtually no information on the other people involved.

The same people who mention that the media is openly hard on Paul Hill should look back to the year when Mpls South was in the title game, and it came out that Tayler had a bad game due to death threats made on her cell phone. He was part of the comments placed in the media. He has always placed himself front and center when it comes to her success and the media surrounding it. Those of us who have known Mr. Hill throughout the past fifteen years of basketball would probably call him an enigma. He can be charming, a bright basketball mind, proud parent.....but he can also be pretty "passionate" in some misguided ways. When I heard this news I was sad, but also was not surprised at the confrontation. Somewhat surprised  a gun made it into the mix.

What is Psbramadan thinking?  The man fired a gun at another person?  Why is this person so bent on "letting this play out in court" or saying this like "alleged crime"?  Yes it's an alleged crime.. but that is only because that's how our judicial system works.  The man fired a gun at another person!!!   Help me understand how this Psbramadan person that is posting seems to be so blinded by this situation?  I understand that Paul could actually be a good person "most of the time" but unfortunately that's not really how it works... you must "really" be a good person period.  AND making an error as significant as actually firing a gun at someone else must be viewed as significant and very serious.  I feel bad for his family but this man must have deep issues period such that he would attempt to Kill another person.  I ask Psbramadan to attempt to think of this in the context of what if this person had pointed a gun and shot at someone that was signficant in their life?  What would you be posting then?  If you truly closed you eyes and thought in this manner could you be so blinded by the event that has happened?

I do hope that this does not negatively affect the family or anyone else that had mistakenly viewed this man as a role model... but unfortunately events as significant as this just should not be overlooked.. especially as it relates to someone that seemingly has been in the position of attempting to be a role model in the lifes of kids, etc...

I am pleased that the article has nestled in between the negative, a few positives:  it identies Tayler as a third year college student, which is admirable.. the  article also mentioned that Paul has a wife (ie., he is a married man) and that he has a clean criminal record.

So while they have printed this negative story about him, there are many positive things that are buried in there. Many people are charged with crimes everyday. A charge is NOT a conviction. (Sad that Tayler was mentioned by name and photo and her school as well, but this too shall pass.) Paul and Tayler WILL go on to accomplish great things...

Why is it necessary to bring Tayler into this? She is a good person with a good reputation. You are making her life harder through this than it already is right now.

She is the only reason this is news.    It's how the media works these days.  Part of the cost of being a celebrity.   It would be poor journalism to not mention the connection.   What if Mr. Hill was receiving preferential or deferential treatment because of the connection?

At a YWCA? Really? I'd expect that kind of thing at McDonald's.

I agree with everything that Psbramadan said and especially about allowing this to play out in court but I would also like to add that I think it is very sad that people want to mar his daughter Tayler's good name as well. He has several children and it just shows the condition of people's heart when they do things like try to undercut someone who has nothing to do with the incident.

Paul Hill is a great father and a fine example of a man, period! His standing in the Mnneapolis and St. Paul community as well as in his church reflect his fine reputation. This alleged crime must be allowed to play out in court adn must not be one which teh media takes and runs away with. Please respect his and his family's privacy at this time.
