Northfield Target employee to deliver "Save Thanksgiving" petition to CEO Gregg Steinhafel

Target: no sight for tired worker's eyes.
The rage has come home to roost.

On Monday afternoon, Seth Coleman,  a seasonal Target employee in Northfield, will deliver a hard copy version of the "Save Thanksgiving" petition to the retailer's headquarters on Nicollet Mall.

"My choice is stay up all night and work two shifts like a zombie, or sleep and not have a Thanksgiving," he says.

After Target announced it would be opening at midnight on Black Friday, a Target employee in Omaha realized he'd have to go to bed at 2 p.m. in the afternoon on Thanksgiving if he had any hope of surviving his shift at 11 p.m. He started the "Tell Target to save Thanksgiving" petition online, and so far it has over 181,000 signatures.

The petition reads, in part:

A full holiday with family is not just for the elite of this nation -- all Americans should be able to break bread with loved ones and get a good night's rest on Thanksgiving!

Since the petition is directed at CEO Gregg Steinhafel, someone has to deliver it to him. That's why the folks at Change.org went scouring the signatures looking for a Minnesotan who'd be willing to risk his or her job to make Target look bad.

They found a local boy in Seth Coleman, a line cook by trade who says jobs are hard to come by in Northfield. He took a seasonal job unloading trucks at Target and is currently scheduled to work two shifts on Thanksgiving in order to keep the store stocked for Black Friday lunatics. He'll be on the clock from 4 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and then again from 10:45 p.m. until 8 a.m.

Normally, he would've spent Thanksgiving with his girlfriend and her family. But given his schedule, he will likely will have to sleep through the whole thing.

He signed the petition, he says, right after finding out about his double shift.

"I need the money," he says. "But if nobody stands up then they're going to be able to keep doing this."

He'll be trundling the very hefty petition down Nicollet Mall at noon on Monday, and will attempt to deliver it to Steinhafel. Coleman says he'll be joined by some Best Buy employees as well.

Yes, of course, Target is not the only retailer throwing its doors open extra, extra early on Black Friday, and so a number of copycat petitions are springing up as well. There's one for Best Buy, which also happens to be based right here in town.

Look working at Target or any other job that pays terribly sucks enough because of the fact that it's almost impossible to survive on that amount of pay. Compound that with the job forcing all their employees to be there is something we should stand up and fight against otherwise next thing you know Thanksgiving won't even exist anymore.

I used to work retail and I liked it sometimes.you have a choice.noone forces you to work or shop.i like to shop late at night than early morning.so I think we should be able to if people are willing to work. I celebrate thanksgiving, but not everyone does or wants to.

My problem is that many people have to work on Thanksgiving.Firemen police officers and most of all our military. Our men and women of the armed forces are defending our country and not getting paid double time.Lots of people are out of work and begging for a job.I'm sorry you work for a company that needs to make a profit to give you a paycheck.Thanksgiving be thankful you have a job so you can get on the computer and complain about having to work using the money you made to buy the computer. So many people would be thankful for food clothing and shelter  and yet you are complaining about working a night poor you.If you don't like it quit so the thankful people can have a job.

Okay as a current employee at Target and has been for almost 7yrs, I must say this petition does not speak for everyone. I look forward to working on black friday every year, because it's just so exciting. I love my job! I can understanding those who are complaining, but I also have a family and its because of them that I work. In this economy I am just happy to have a job. The extra time and a half pay is a bonus for me. So please if you don't want to work just quit or call out. Don't hurt the company that's putting food in your mouth. This is hurting my 401k, Target is not the only company opening at midnight. Walmart is opening at 10pm you don't hear their associates bringing their company down. Macys is opening at midnight where is the protest against them from their employees. Okay I think i've said my piece, thank God you're just a seasonal employee. So you will be gone after the holidays, and I hope you don't plan on looking for another job because NO company wants a known troublemaker on their payroll. After all we are still close on Thanksgiving , Christmas and Easter.

Seth Coleman is a lazy whining baby.  I have worked the day before, the day of, and the day after Thanksgiving for the past 3 years...

It's "THANKS"giving!  People on this board need to get a grip, stop being so self absorbed, and stop snipping at people who just want to spend time with their families!  It's ONE day!  They're not asking to be put on the dole! They're asking for ONE day to spend with their family!  What good is working if the only reason you do it is to amass THINGS?  ALL of us should be THANKFUL for what we already have!  Look at some of the kids, growing up in these 3rd world countries.....heck...look at some of our kids in America - growing up in poverty!  Remember when you were 7 and happy to just get your favorite food on Thanksgiving?  When you walked into the kitchen to the smell of that turkey roasting in the oven or that Apple Pie baking?  Remember when you didn't even KNOW what Black Friday was and MADE a Christmas gift for your parents or that favorite brother and sister?  Get a grip people!  It's "THANKS"giving!  Be grateful for what you have - and if you have enough intelligence to be able to put words together to make a sentence - be GRATEFUL for that, too!  Use your knowledge to help - not hurt and demean people!  And while you're at it, you might want to put your hands together and say a prayer to the Man upstairs for all you DO have - instead of all you THINK you need!  And also, a prayer for all the wounded vets - and soldiers who won't have the luxury of spending Thanksgiving at home!

I am an emergency room physician.  I spent four years in college, seven years in grad school, residency, internships and so forth.  i don't think its fair that I have to work on Thanksgiving either.  Where do I send the petition to close the hospitals on Thanksgiving?

Liam

The median expected salary for an ER physician in the united states is $247,375, which breaks down to $119.00 an hour.  I would gladly skip every holiday if I was making that much money.  But you can send your petition to Doc Brown, I think he would let you borrow the Delorean so you can go back and change your career decision before you started college.

Willing to bet that most of the people posting comments calling these people lazy will be enjoying a lazy 4+ day weekend starting on Thursday.

I'm a retail employee, have worked every black Friday for six years,  and I think these employees are being cry babies. It's apart of the job and there are plenty of people who would love to work these days because they need the money.  No one is forcing these people to work retail.

Liam
Liam

I put six years in at best buy and worked five black Fridays.  I have no problem with retail stores opening up at 5am/6am for the day after.  I think that is the point that most of you are missing, they don't mind working that day, they just want the hours of business to be reasonable.  Yea getting up at 3 to go to work was rough, but I was able to stay and enjoy my thanksgiving with my family.  Now most employees will have to show up at 10pm if not earlier.  So they go to bed at what? 4pm? Earlier?  Sure there are a bunch of teenagers or people that don't enjoy holidays out there that don't care and would like to work it.  Most of us enjoy spending holidays with our families and loved ones though.  I do think that these employees are right in saying that the companies are ruining a holiday.  The best thing I ever did was put my two week notice in 15 days before thanksgiving.

So wait.. this guy got a seasonal job at a retail store, and now he's upset that he has to work on the busiest shopping day of the year?

People that clean sewers for a living have to step in shit. People who work in retail have to sometimes work on holidays and weekends.

DEAL WITH IT!

In addition you don't note, but I saw there are many stores now who are advertising that they WON"T do that to their employees!

It's really fucked up that people are forced to work the holidays but it's not targets fault. Target is open because there is a demand from people who feel they need to go shopping at midnight on the day after Thanks Giving. Blame those idiots. If there was no demand these stores would be closed and their employees could enjoy the holiday. The customers are the ones forcing people to lose time with their families.

Good God These people  have jobs that pay for their homes, food, cars  and all the other things that they have and they are going to gripe that they have to work on a holiday night....Where have all the real people gone. All we hear about is these jerks that want something for nothing..I worked in long haul trucking for 18 years and could count on my fingers the times that I was home on holidays and don't have enough fingers and toes to count  the times that I drove for 24 solid hours so that I could be home for Christmas. Or the times on the ranch when we were up before daylight and worked til dark and then cleaned up and went to a dance...Where does it say that you have to have 8 hours sleep every day, You guy's and girl's get it together -- Have your holiday ,go to work ,work your shift and go home and sleep the next day.Damn bunch of wimp's....quit crying

First I'm against anyone being open on the holidays unless absolutely necessary. Friday at 4 am is bad enough. However;

Target say's this employee is not scheduled to work. Evidently the news is reporting he has another job. It appears this person is trying to create bad will against target. I suggest replacing this employee with someone who wants to work AND this employee going to night school for 4 years to get his degree, then 2-3 more years to get his MBA and then work his way up the corporate ladder to be CEO. Then he can decide on holiday work.

I'm a bit confused.  If he doesn't want to work it, then don't.  I'm all for OWS, and I think the gap between the haves and have-nots has gotten to wide, but this to me just sounds like whining.  No, the CEO likely won't work on Thanksgiving, but I guarantee he spends a lot more time stressing about his job than the guy working the register.  And nothing is stopping this guy from working hard and getting to the point where he doesn't have to work on holidays.

On another note, if people are willing to go shopping at midnight on a holiday, then surely some people should be willing to work those times.

If you think for a second that Big Companies like Target or Best Buy give a rats a@$ about their employees, you are smoking some serious crack. All those idiots care about is PROFIT at any expense. anon-net.tk

Super90

The right-wing jerks who showed up to post on this article are totally missing the point. Who wants to live in a society where the CEO, who makes 100 times what you make though he works no harder, can decree that you miss a national holiday just because he wants more profits?LIFE IS NOT ABOUT PROFIT. Thanksgiving is the best time to remember that. It's about family and loved ones. These employees can't not work even if they want to. They are totally at the mercy of their employers. Moreover, Target has never allowed unions in their stores, so the employees have no way to fight back collectively.

Here's a hypothetical: An old man has his pension raided by a dirtbag CEO. He is FORCED to work at 70 because someone else stole his money, which has been happening repeatedly over the last 30 years. Now he has to work a double on Thanksgiving because of some other dirtbag CEO.  Are you gong to tel him to "Be Strong" Or be "thankful he has a job"?No. Not unless you're a heartless SOB.

Let's see what the Bible says:

Leviticus 19:13You shall not oppress your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of a hired man are not to remain with you all night until morning.orProverbs 22:16He who oppresses the poor to make more for himself or who gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.or James 5:4Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.

Didn't you mean to Liberal government Didn't you mean liberal government instead of CEO in your example? That would have been much more accurate. I think we should have a check box Republican or dumocrat on all Job applications. It would insure employers make the correct choice. If you don't want to work then quit bitching for benefits. Earn what you sow not what I sow

Retail jobs are hard to even find in this market. There are many people who are willing to work such hours because they want the money and the job.

SilentSiren

hahahahaha though he works no harder.  This is what pisses me off. You have no idea how hard he works.  I get this crap all the time about being a lawyer.  The amount of hours I put in and the type of work I do would (and does, look at legal retention rates) break most people.  Retail is a mindless joke of an easy job.  Be thankful you have the ability to make time and a half on the holiday.

retailwarrior
retailwarrior

You seriously think that working retail is a mindless job? Now the jokes on you. I run a multi-million dollar store at the Mall of America and my job is the farthest thing from a easy one. I don't work retail because I didn't go to school either. I went to school for psychology and human development, double major. It's people like you who think retail is easy that makes it that much harder for us. It's the assholes that look down on us, like yourself, that make our lives even more hellish than it should be. I myself am working a double shift for Black Friday. I am working at 11 tonight and again at 4pm tomorrow. It was my idea to my district manager that we open at midnight too, because I want to make more money so I get a bigger bonus. Since I've been in retail management for 7 years now my family has just moved the dates in which we celebrate the holidays to make it work.  So as a person who actually works retail I say yes, it sucks to do this Midnight Madness thing, but it's my job, so I do it even if I don't agree with it.

If you're a lawyer, then you already are an ass.  The lawyers I know are so into money and pretentiousness, it turns my stomach to look at them.  And some human being you appear to be.  Some people are not born with the intellect to be a professional etc. , and they use what they have and work hard even though to you it would be a demeaning position.  It's just not nice to debase another human being because of his status on the feeding chain.  He may be trying a lot harder than you give credit.  A lawyer who refers to another human as a mindless joke solidifies the perception that most people have of lawyers as people.

Matt

I am sure these employees waited in long lines for this job. I am sure each and everyone at that point wanted the job so bad they would sign up for working this shift to keep a pay check coming in.just put on your application when you apply for a job "I will whine and bitch about having to make this company money."your scripture is so out of context. then again so is the whole bible.

You really need to get a grip of yourself and get a clue when it comes to knowing what you are talking about freakin' "Genius". As someone who has worked in a good number of retail jobs INCLUDING Target, I can honestly tell you these jobs just aren't worth wasting a holiday away from family. Retailers don't give a shit about their own employees, despite all the nauseating BS they like to spread around for the sole purpose of PR. They don't give a crap about employee families whatsoever, all they care about is the ALMIGHTY $. What they give their own employees isn't what anyone would call pay, it's barely above minimum wage. Don't get me started on the so-called raises they give to their so called "valued" employees. At Target they handed out raises at .05 or .10 cents at a time. Everytime I think about it, it takes all the strength I have just to hold all my laughter in at such a joke. It's not just Target either, it's most retailers, who cut employees' hours to ridiculously low totals simply so they don't have to pay them benefits, lets not forget they are being paid ridiculously low rates. So in the end they are getting paid next to nothing, hardly worth all the effort or trouble.

Does anyone see Target's CEO working on Thanksgiving or anyone else from their corporate HQ working on Thanksgiving. Of course not. Maybe if they were required to fly off to various Target stores around the country and staying away from their families for the holidays that would open their eyes and they can see the negative impact their decisions have on the store employees. IT's no wonder why I continuously hear stories about how these type of workers clock out for lunch and don't bother to come back. MORE POWER TO THEM.

If I were working a job where I was making an impact on peoples' lives or working a job where I am required to be of some importance (i.e. policeman, nurse, doctor, military personnel, emergency personnel, etc.) I would be more than happy to give up my holidays and work and wouldn't bitch about my job. But retail isn't that type of field. It's a field that only has meaning and impact the a retailer's bottom line.

So before you or anyone else opens their pot hole and starts spewing their useless garbage, educate yourselves and learn about what you are talking about!!!!

OrderOfMen.com
OrderOfMen.com

"Does anyone see Target's CEO working on Thanksgiving or anyone else from their corporate HQ working on Thanksgiving."  No because he is the CEO,  he runs the company and YES he does deserve more than the 1000's of employees beneath him.  He worked to be CEO.

Why do you care what they think of you, they pay you a salary to do the job...I have worked at Target in the flow team ,doing research  on the store,so who cares  what they think, or even why.. So  then don't work retail? I have worked retail for over six years and am fully aware that long hours and little pay are apart of the job. I am willing to do it because I love the job.  If you aren't willing to deal with it, then no one is forcing you.

You didn't say whether or not you are a man or women. If you are a women you are a CUNT!!! If you are a man you are also a CUNT! Have some pride and go to work. Lazy ass bitch. By the way these employees get paid double overtime to work those hours. And the reason why these employees are getting paid what thet are getting paid is because they're very stupid. They are one step above the tard the cut my ticket at the movie theater yesterday. I sure hope you don't have any children because you have no pride! And you will be setting a very bad example for any child. And the reason why you don't see the Target CEO working on the holidays is because he worked his ass off to get to the position he is in. Instead of asking for handout he was probably the one who worked on the holidays gladly because unlike you he is proud of what he does. I have never meet you but I'm pretty sure you should have been aborted! Whore!
