Catholic League files complaint against Rebekah Nett, lawyer who claimed the courts are run by "bigoted Catholic beasts"
The Catholic League wants a Minnesota lawyer disbarred for filing the craziest bankruptcy brief of all-time.![]()
Catholic League Rebekah Nett's harsh words against Catholics might cost her $10,000
In the brief, filed November 25, attorney Rebekah Nett accuses Judge Nancy Dreher of being a "Catholic Knight Witch Hunter," declares that the court system is "composed of a bunch of ignoramus, bigoted Catholic beasts that carry the sword of the church," and even labels a bankruptcy trustee, Colin Kreuziger, "priest's boy."
Nett missed a hearing on November 17 because opposing counsel Nauni Manty had given her notice that it was set for 1:30 instead of 1. Nett and her client, Naomi Isaacson, took that to suggest a conspiracy by the judge and the other lawyers, who were "of the same race and religion."
The filing was first reported by the Pioneer Press. The brief has since drawn the attention of Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League.
Donohue filed complaints with the Minnesota Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board and the Wisconsin Office of Lawyer Regulation, since Nett is licensed to practice in both states.![]()
Bill Donohue had a problem with Nett's filing
In an official statement, Donohue said "Nett should not only be sanctioned, she deserves to be disbarred."
"I've been doing this job for two decades, and we have seen some outbursts of anti-Catholicism in the courtroom, but this is the most egregious," Donohue told the Pioneer Press. "I've never seen anything like this."
Judge Dreher, handling the bankruptcy case, has ordered Nett and Isaacson to defend themselves on January 4. Dreher might fine them up to $10,000 for the "unsupported and outrageous allegations of bigotry, deceit, conspiracy, and scandalous statements" in the filing.
"I have never been a Catholic," Dreher added.
