Mike Osskopp doesn't like people who drive "Jap cars."

UPDATE: Mike Osskopp has dropped out of the race for the MNGOP chair and will support Pat Shortridge instead. He still hates "Jap cars" though.

Mike Osskopp, one of two candidates for the MNGOP chair, once had to apologize for shouting about "Jap cars" in a 2006 video getting new circulation on The Uptake this morning.

Osskopp is one of two candidates for the position left vacant when Tony Sutton resigned in the face of a scandal over the massive tab he ran up contesting the razor-thin results of the governor's race.

In the video, Osskopp is seen yelling, "Another Jap car? Sure enough another Jap car! Your buddies are supporting all these Jap and German cars!" The slurs were directed at supporters of DFL candidate Colleen Rowley during a 2006 rally.

After the behavior was condemned by the Asian American Journalists Association, Osskopp apologized for the slur:

"I apologize if my words offended any Americans of Japanese descent, including my sister-in-law," Osskopp said. "I allowed my emotions to get the better of me and used a phrase commonly used in my youth, but which is now inappropriate and offensive."

It is just the latest sign of a MNGOP in disarray.

The previous frontrunner for  the MNGOP Chair, Brandon Sawalich, withdrew his name last Friday after being arrested and fingerprinted at the airport for having expired vehicle tabs. Soon after, it emerged that Sawalich had settled a sexual harassment suit by a subordinate in 2003.

Additionally, the MNGOP continues to wrestle with the ever-evolving scandal involving Amy Koch and Michael Brodkorb.
