Keith Ellison on voter ID approval: "Today is a sad day for democracy"

Though he no longer serves in the state legislature, Ellison is apparently following the proposed voter ID amendment closely.
Yesterday, the state Senate Local Government and Elections Committee approved a proposed voter ID constitutional amendment in a party-line 8-6 vote.

The amendment now goes before another committee before coming before the whole Senate. A companion bill in the House has not yet been scheduled for committee hearing.

Though polls show a vast majority of Minnesotans favor requiring voters to show photo ID at the polls, U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison was so outraged to see the amendment win its first legislative victory that he issued a harshly worded statement following yesterday's committee vote. Here's what he said, in part:

Today is a sad day for democracy. Earlier this afternoon, Republicans voted to turn our constitutional right to vote into a privilege. Minnesotans should be outraged...

... When it comes to civic participation, our nation has always moved in the director of greater inclusion. We need to keep that tradition going, and a photo ID amendment would do nothing but restrict Minnesotans' constitutional right to vote.
Scott newman.jpg
Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, sponsors the voter ID amendment in the Senate.
Voter ID legislation won approval in both the House and Senate last year, but the bill was ultimately vetoed by Gov. Mark Dayton. With a constitutional amendment, supporters of the bill -- mainly Republicans -- can bypass the governor.

The amendment, of course, is aimed at eliminating voter fraud. Bill sponsor Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, said during yesterday's hearing that he does "think we have voter fraud here in Minnesota."

But others question whether voter fraud is a significant enough problem to justify spending an as-of-yet-undetermined amount of money to issue ID cards to eligible voters without driver's licenses. The state would presumably also have to pay for staff to check IDs on election day and the 10 days afterward. (If you forget your ID when voting, the bill allows you to cast a provisional ballot, but you'd have to show proof of identification within 10 days in order for your ballot to count.)

MPR found that roughly 113 people were convicted of voter fraud following Minnesota's 2008 general election. That's less than 1 percent of the roughly 2.9 million Minnesotans who voted.

The Minnesota Secretary of State's Office estimates the proposal would be a problem for about 215,000 current voters, primarily the elderly, disabled, students, and military personal -- all groups less likely to have a valid form of photo ID than a typical citizen.

John Harrington, D-St. Paul, characterized Republicans' voter ID drive as a solution in search of a problem.

"We're talking a microscopic number that could be charged, and I really urge you to seriously think about this," he said. "Why are we doing this? What is the need? What is the problem we're trying to solve?"

But Republicans, contra the evidence, seem to think voter fraud is a serious problem. And with 80 percent of Minnesotans favoring a photo ID requirement as of last May, the amendment's growing momentum in the Republican-controlled legislature means it's likely that Minnesota will join 33 other states in adopting some form of voter ID requirement this November.

This voter ID issue needs to pass. I don't see what the challenge is. You have to have an ID to cash your check; You need an ID to get on an airplane. So what's the issue with showing your ID to vote...wait, I know - some poor person that doesn't have a job says that voter ID is focused to keep him/her from being a part of the political process.  The political process the MN DFL wants i for the poor Blacks to stay poor, keep the leadership as is with incompetents  that have never run a shoe-shine stand. This voter ID thing is a misdirection by the DFL and national Democrats. Having an ID is an important part of life. Get one, use one!

Sam I am.

But then on the other hand, I can see why Democrats are against this bill.  They are horrified to think that their Hero, Obama bin Ladin, might get voted out.  Lets realize that when it comes to the Electoral College, the Minnesota vote means nothing.  No one gives a crap what we have to think because, MN is basically a suburb of Canada, according to the rest of the nation.

Sam I am.
Sam I am.

I'm all for proving that you are a citizen to be eligible to vote, but how does a picture ID prove your citizenship?  Wouldn't it be easier (and cheaper) just to have everyone bring in either a SS card, birth certificate, or a proof of naturalization form and check everyone's name and SS number against a database to ensure that people are not voting more than once?  Isn't that what this whole thing is all about?

I highly doubt illegal immigrants are going to risk getting caught and getting deported over attempting trying to vote.  All immigrants who are here legally are going to have SOME form of proof of citizenship.  I mean, one of the first things you get after being naturalized is a SS card. And if you have lost it, all you have to do is request a new one by mail for a small fee.

I believe licenses are valid for four years and are around $16. If a person saves a penny per day in that span it's nearly paid for. As far as waiting in line @ the DMV, it sucks for sure. But what is two hours every four years? Come on man!

Maybe you should have waited to have kids (you know her life?   What if she wasn't able to have kids when she's older due to a medical condition?  What if she made a mistake?   What if she was raped and doesn't believe in abortion?)  NO I DON'T KNOW HER LIFE BUT I KNOW SHE HAD SEX TO HAVE GOTTEN PREGNET,  MOST LIKELY HAD SEX BY CHOICE. BOB IN DULUTH THIS IS FOR YOU AND ALL OTHER "POLL TAX" PEOPLE So let me get this straight, an ID that may be free if your broke, is a poll tax?  So is driving to the poll and burning gas in your insured car that bank owns because you still make payments on it  a poll tax?  Is it a poll tax to do research on the candidates by buying a TV and watch the news or buying a news paper? Is a poll tax to make sure you ate enough food that day to have the energy to walk int the polling station?  I guess under this kind of logic anything it takes to get in to the polling station is a tax, maybe the government should just wake us up in our house personally in the morning get us dress and wheel us into the station...

The cost of a MN State I.D. is $15.50, $10.75 for seniors.

So, are the liberal nay-sayers and race baiters telling me that they all those “poor” people who they say will be disenfranchised because of requiring an ID in order to vote (like they don’t need the ID to do all sorts of other things) cannot get their asses off their couches which are parked in front of flat screens tuned to Oprah in paid-for government housing and work for like 1 day every 4 years in order to vote?Hell, if they cannot do that, then they are just too stupid to vote. I’d put something in about neutering them, but, then I would be accused of being mean.

How do people without a photo ID get a job? Or alcohol? Or cash a check? My life would be substantially more difficult without a photo ID. And now this bill is offering government money and services for people who don't have one, to get it at no cost to them, and Democrats are opposed to it? Aren't Democrats supposed to be in favor of government spending to help the poor and needy get things to help them out? This whole "controversy" smacks of hypocrisy on both sides. The Democrats don't want to lose these votes and the Republicans are inventing witch hunts. Big surprise.

113 people were convicted but how many voters actually committed fraud? No one would seriously suggest that the number of DUI convictions represents the actual number of drunk drivers.  The actual number of offenders usually is much much larger than the actual number of convictions.

Imagine a political party wanting to make sure their supporters can vote!  Shocking!   The DFL are such hypocrites for wanting to make sure the people that vote for them can vote.   Do you understand what hypocrisy means?    How is it hypocritical for Democrats to protect the voting rights of the poor and elderly?

Well drunk driving is a little different from voter fraud isn't it?   A drunk driver needs to be caught while driving or the proof of the crime is gone.   The Attorney General has the votes case forever.  He has hard evidence of wrong doing that he can investigate for a long time.    If the election is close, the votes will be poured over by both sides looking for fraud.  If the 113 people convicted represent 1% of total vote fraud that still only works out to 11,300 fraudelent votes which is less than 0.5% of total votes.   Thank goodness you are a stupid fucking moron giving your opinion yet have never taken a math class.  Perhaps that will be the next test for voting.  I know dumb kirk could never pass a math, science, or English test to vote.    Where will it stop the rules making it hard to vote?

It becomes hypocritcal when Democrats claim it's a matter of liberty when it's actually about ensuring that they stay in office. If this was switched around, and it was mostly GOP voters, there's no way Democrats would care about it. That's politics.

Also, if it's so incredibly difficult for these people to get a simple, government-provided photo ID, how are they expected to get to the polls and vote? I've spent a lot more time waiting to vote than I have waiting to get a photo ID.

If politicians pass a law that makes it harder for people to vote and easier for them to stay in power I would call that voter fraud. Wouldn't you?    It is a fact this amendment will cost millions of dollars  and will disenfranchise more voters than their are fraudelent voters?    Plus, even with voter ids you will still have voter fraud.   All this law does is make less people vote for a problem that doesn't exist.   You can't prove voter fraud is a big enough problem to spend millions of dollars while making it harder for people to vote.

Have you cited one election where 3 million votes are cast and where 58 votes would make a difference?    Do you really think they only catch 1% of voter fraud?  I would bet the number is closer 95% of all voter fraud is caught which means it isn't a problem at all.    Disprove my math or otherwise shut up.  You haven't cited one fact in your posts.   Just insluts and whining from you.   Stop whining its unattractive you loser.   Please prove it is a problem woth spending millions of dollars.  Use math, logic, or citable facts.

I don';t think we will agree on this one. I want the assurance that they ID voters to protect my vote. Plain and simple. All these heated arguments prove we will as Americans will NEVER agree on many things.  That is why I think most issues should not be settled on the federal level.  Now I know this is on a state level.  I like that!  I see where you are coming from on the other side.  it is a small proportion of the voters, but they cant catch them all.  even w ID's they probably won't.  As far as the $$ part, well our public finances are all out of whack, on a stat and fed level.  With our priorities straight we could afford to provide ID's to those who can't afford.  Personally I think were fucked no matter what we do.  You can't trust any one in the private or public sector if they are in a position of power.  They control all the information.  WE NEED TRANSPARENCY.  I know its a bit of a cop out post but I know we wont agree on this issue. I answered your questions in other posts stupid.  Democrats oppose this because there is no problem with voter fraud.  The Republicans want to spend millions to stop a problem that doesn't exist.  I've proven it with math.  It's logical to assume the more hurdles you place on voting, the less people vote.   That's not good for Democracy.   Please explain how you want to spend millions to stop a problem that will never effect an election.   Feel free to use math or logic just don't use excuses like your last posts you pathetic liar.

1% isn't right though fucktard.   They only caught 113 people.   I pointed out if they only caught 1% of the people commiting fraud then fraudelent votes still wouldn't add up to 1%.   Please stop being so stupid because its obvious you never finished high school.   The Norm Coleman vs Al Franken Senate battle was the closet election Minnesota has ever seen.   Al Franken had 1,212,431 votes.   Norm Coleman had 1,212,206.   This is a difference of how many votes idiot?   Not enough to sway the election one way or the other.   Also fucking idiot please note fraudlent voters will cast votes for both Democrats and Republicans.  Even if the votes went 75-25 one way what are you dealing with?   85 Republican-28 DFL for a net gain of 57 votes?    I know its hard when you are poorly educated and have never studied anything like math, science or statistics but please try to be smarter than a fucking 5th grader.   We should spend millions because 53 votes out of 3 million might be fucked up?    When was the last time you actually thought about something using math?   5th grade you fucking idiot?  You Republicans should try reading something beyond TV Guide.  It's shameful how poorly educated and flat out stupid you are.
