Macalester College
Santorum appalls Macalester President Brian Rosenberg
Macalester President Brian Rosenberg is appalled by Rick Santorum.

The liberal arts college bigwig has come out against the Republican presidential candidate despite the potential for alienating his conservative alumni. Rosenberg spends part of a recently-published essay ruminating on the responsibilities of a university president, and says it's generally a bad idea for university presidents to get involved in politics.

But Rosenberg concludes that Santorum threatens the fundamental educational mission of Macalester, so he's speaking out.

Rosenberg cites two recent statements from Santorum as proof that he's dangerous to the university's mission.

First, Rosenberg quotes Santorum saying that global warming studies are bogus and that they're "political science," not actually science.

Santorum continued by blasting the scientific community.

"When it comes to the management of the earth, they are the anti-science ones. We are the ones who stand for science, and technology," Santorum said, offending Rosenberg.

The other offense against education Rosenberg cites comes from an interview the ex-senator did with Glenn Beck recently.

"I understand why Barack Obama wants to send every kid to college, because of their indoctrination mills, absolutely," Santorum said. "The indoctrination that is going on at the university level is a harm to our country."

Rosenberg goes on to explain that he feels a responsibility to criticize Santorum for thinking college is "bad for our country."

So, Rosenberg reasoned in the essay, reprinted by the Star Tribune: donations be damned!

"I am appalled by the views of Rick Santorum," Rosenberg wrote, before joking that he needs to go check on the water flow in the indoctrination mill on the northeast corner of the Macalester campus.
