Minneapolis 13th best city for social media jobs, study finds

Mpls' social media job market is very solid.
Social media has revolutionized the way we publish and disseminate information. No longer are journalists ink-stained wretches trying to put together a story before a print deadline -- now we're more like carpal tunnel-plagued pixelheads trying to be the first to tweet the latest scoop.

But, if you're someone looking to make a living as a blogger, online marketing manager, or social media strategist, what cities are the best places to look for work? Well, if a healthy job market and solid salary potential are your motivators, then All Twitter -- "The Unofficial Twitter Resource" -- has just the list for you.

The online publication recently compiled the Social Media Strategy Guide, and it turns out that Minneapolis isn't such a bad place to be for us pixelheads after all.

According to the study, Minneapolis has the 13th-highest volume of social media jobs in the country -- second in the Midwest only to Chicago. Unsurprisingly, California and the Northeast dominate the top five, which goes like this -- New York (number one), San Jose, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Boston (number five).

What can social media workers expect to make here in the Twin Cities? Well, one way to try and find out would be to ask me, but another, probably more fruitful way way would be to consult with the salary range data compiled by All Twitter. In Minneapolis, the salary for a blogger is in the $16,000 to $44,000 range, compared with $22,000 to $60,000 in New York City. Looking for something more lucrative? The study found that the best compensated social media job is social media marketing manager, which in Minneapolis comes with a salary in the range of $54,000 to $85,000, compared with $72,000 to $114,000 in San Fran.

Interesting, the study found that there are almost as many social media marketing managers out there as bloggers -- 27 percent of social media pixelheads are marketing managers, while bloggers account for 30 percent of the jobs.

So, if you're looking to get a foot in the social media door, it seems you may not have to travel very far to find work. Minneapolis may not be the home of new-media giants like Twitter and Google, but we're aren't the social media backwoods, either.

Makie - You never got a call back from that interview with (Insert any social media marketing company in Twin Cities area here) did you? Cue the sad trombone.

AKA... fake, skill-less, slack-ass jobs. Attention social media addicts - stop helping these leeches make money doing nothing!

These jobs are not fake and the people that work them are not slackers. I manage MANY pages on FB and many accounts on Twitter across the country. You have to have Marketing and Branding skills and you are constantly learning. The people in these jobs don't just sit on Facebook and like pictures or tweet about the cheeseburgers they had for lunch. You study analytics, trends, create graphic and visual designs. MANY companies will hire ONLY people that have a background and a BA in Marketing, sales, web analytics. Yes social media is new- but it shouldn't be harped on as a Fake job....
