Minneapolis top inland city for organic foodie lifestyle, says Organic Authority

Between the coasts, Minneapolis is the hotbed of the "organic foodie culture."

​If you're afraid of oceans but eager to live an "organic foodie lifestyle," then there is no better place in America than Minneapolis.

Overall, Minneapolis ranks sixth on the Organic Authority's organic foodie lifestyle list, which looks at the availability of organic foods in metros throughout the country.

Organic Authority notes that U.S. sales of organic food and beverages have risen from $1 billion in 1990 to nearly $27 in 2010, but that increase, of course, hasn't been evenly distributed evenly throughout the country. So the list attempts to determine which areas are hotbeds of organic culture.

The top five cities on the list are all on the coast -- from first to fifth, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, and New York City. Then comes Minneapolis -- the only Midwestern city to crack the nine-city list (the only other two inland cities are Denver, which ranks eighth, and ninth-place Austin).

So, they don't tell us anything that we didn't already know, but still, it's a pretty cool recognition. Minneapolis might not be America's mecca of organic culture, but we're pretty close -- and according to the Organic Authority, we're way ahead of our not-adjacent-to-salt-water brethren.
