Twin Cities dermatologist may close business rather than offer his employees contraception

The Obama administration's "preventative services" mandate isn't popular with Catholics.
A Twin Cities-based dermatologist may close down his business because of the Obama administration's new "preventative services" mandate.

That mandate requires virtually all employers to purchase health insurance plans that cover contraception. Catholics, in particular, believe this requirement violates their faith.

Dr. Michael Ebertz runs five dermatology clinics around the Twin Cities under the name of Skin Care Doctors, P.A. He's reportedly considering closing his business rather than offering his employees health care plans that cover contraception.

Ebertz told the National Catholic Register he is "very upset" about the Department of Health and Human Service's preventative services mandate, which he views as "a direct attack on the tenets of our faith and our individual freedoms and liberties."

He said he's "praying hard" for the mandate to be overturned, but even if it isn't, it doesn't sound like he has any plans to offer his employees health care plans covering contraception.

The Register's reporter writes that Ebertz "has even been wondering if, in a worst-case scenario, he would have to consider dissolving the company, which he helped found in 1998."

In response to the uproar the mandate has caused, a White House blog post points out that no individual will be forced to buy or use contraception. Under the policy, women who want contraception will have access to it through their insurance without paying a co-pay or deductible. But no one will be forced to buy or use it.

That explanation, however, isn't satisfactory to some business-owning Catholics, who apparently want the freedom to impose their contraception-is-sinful beliefs on their employees.

I don't think he'll close. I know of a similar story of dermatology in phoenix az. Yeah they didn't end up closing.

Yea right! I doubt he'd close. Funny how he has an issue offering preventive measures to not  get pregnant but sure doesn't seem to mind blowing up a womens lips or face. We all know fillers are a dermatologists bread and butter! Close down already, you won't be missed!!!!

What a load of bs!  First, as everyone connected to medicine knows, dermatologists, as a rule, are virtually never in the top 50% of their med school class but typically rake in top $$ by accurately diagnosing teenage zits and writing rx for zit cream.  Occasionally they send a biopsy to  the lab so the pathologist can decide if the lesion is cancerous or not.  They don't have emergencies so they always have weekends/evenings/vacations. It's a kush job--everyone should have this gig!  This dude will close his practice (and his easy $$ flow) when he is ready to retire or when the world ends, whichever comes last.

Health Care is not "conditions-I-feel-matter care."  This is no different than an employer refusing to offer care that covers mental health medication (sad people should just be happy!), cholesterol medication (they should just chose to eat less bacon!) or cancer (never smoke or eat radium!).  That it affects only your women employees and involves (possibly) their sex lives is, as their employer, none of your business to moralize about.

Health care should be comprehensive, and any decisions made regarding medication belong to the patient and their doctor, not the patient's employer.

Those last words I disagree with.  ""want the freedom to impose their contraception-is-sinful beliefs on their employees."  I see it the other way around.  If someone wants to work for Skin Care Doctors, P.A., then they are choosing to work for a company with those beliefs.  You don't want to be "imposed" upon at your job, find one that more closely aligns with your beliefs.  We all have the RIGHT to contract, UNLIMITED.  Plus, his argument is flawed, by submitting to the voluntary society of the corporate United States, he is already accepting adolatry of a false god according to his catholic beliefs, by participating in the "government."

...and he buys the right to impose those beliefs when he purchases the health care. That is the beauty of capitalism.

Thanks for bringing this guy to light, I will make sure that I never ever visit one of this guy's clinics.

How about this angle? Pay your employees more per hour and have your employees purchase their own insurance policies?  Or ....only hire sworn celibate people that vow never to have sex. Maybe  then your feelings won't be  hurt so much by human behavior...

well tennets of faith may not be considered as a violation of beleif as belife is free will . Health care is a fonational requirment in the first world as to not be a burden on the state.....

Where does it say he is Catholic? There are other faiths that have an issue with his mandate.

Ok, As a business owner, he should have the right to provide whatever health care plan he wants... or even if he has one... its the employees choice to choose to work there... if they don't like the benefits, then they can go elsewhere... they are BENEFITS... not guarantees. If his beliefs make him want to choose a plan that doesn't cover BC, that is his choice as the business owner.... if you don't like it, don't work there.

Michelle - just because he is Catholic doesn't mean he is a molester. COME ON PEOPLE... Humans make mistakes and SIN, that should not mean that the same is true for that whole group of people...

People of other religions can refuse to sell products that are against their religion to be tolerant (ex: selling someone certain meats, remember that one???) BUT if it has anything to do with Christianity, no way... we are forcing you to do what is against your religion, just to make you mad... where is the Freedom in that???

A person upset that the government is getting in the way of pushing his religious beliefs on others?

Sounds about right for a "christian".

Wait, what?  It violated their face to buy insurance that covers contraception?  Huh?  I always thought it was using the contraception that was against their faith?

Its seems there is an ever-expanding universe of "concern" for the unborn.

But if this were a Somali businessman who decided to close up shop because birth control is against the tenants of Islam, you all would be in favor of his decision because he is exercising his right to not allow the government to impede on his religious beliefs.

Stupidly radical much?
Stupidly radical much?

Catholics also don't have the right to push their narrow-minded and ancient beliefs on others either.

It's his business. He can offer or not offer whatever he wants to his employees. If they don't like it, then they are free to seek employment somewhere else. The government has no right to tell people how to run their businesses. Just another government regulation to control people.

Go ahead Dr.  This is all posturing. You'll have to wait at least another 5 years and hope for a Republican sweep of congress and hope that they reverse this decison before you can run your own business again.   Good luck with that, sir.

So government has no right to tell people how to run their business but business has a right to tell people what to do in their bedroom?   You have a stupid vision for how our country should be run.

sam I am is a racist in case you were unaware.  He's is typical for the Republican base voter.  Just trolls on every story saying racist things.   Currently bets are being placed on whether it was nature, nuture, eating lead paint, or fetal alcohol syndrome that cause his lack of brainpower.   You can also bet it was all 4 which is the current front runner.

Please, without disrespectful attacks, tell me how this company is "has a right to tell people what to do in their bedroom?"  It seems you have a right to TELL someone, not FORCE someone.

No, it's like this: the government has no right to tell people how to run their business and the business has no right to tell people what to do in their bedroom, and the people have no right to demand business pay for what the people do in their bedroom.

You are never funny.  Have you noticed how no one likes you or your stupid thoughts?   Why don't you go away.   I'm sure you are considered very clever on the blogs for racist right wing trash like you.  You couldn't make a funny joke or a smart comment if your life depended on it.  It's because you have a small stupid brain that makes life hard for you.  I'm sure you and kirk are really good at being janitors, it takes a special skill to clean up a feces covered bathroom but commenting with wit and wisdom is a little beyond you right now.  Look its not your fault, you were born to terrible trashy scumpeople who didn't raise you right.   That's why you are a bitter racist loser right?

Notice the use of Fox News and Republican buzz words.   Sam I am is typical of the racist loser trash that makes up Fox News and Newt Gingrinch's base of support.   Like all Republicans he will hold his nose and vote for Romney but non racist people should know who they stand with when the vote Republican.  Newt calls Obama the "Food Stamp President" and racists like sam here know they are in the right political party.
