Bachmann: Left-driven Limbaugh outrage hypocritical

Bachmann suggested companies wouldn't pull ads if left-leaning commentators called her a "slut" or "prostitute."
During an interview with CNN yesterday, Michele Bachmann discussed the recent Rush Limbaugh slut-gate scandal that has prompted companies to pull advertising from the conservative shock-jock's program.

Bachmann made a case that prominent conservative women, such as herself and Sarah Palin, face similar "vitriol" -- vitriol that receives less attention than it does when directed toward left-leaning women.

Of course, there's a significant difference that line of argument overlooks -- it's one thing for a prominent Republican shock-jock like Limbaugh to call a contraception-supporting woman a "slut" and a "prostitute," but quite another when private citizens make offensive and distasteful comments about females in positions of leadership from behind their computers.

During the interview, Bachmann said: "I have gone through this myself, and experienced more things said about me, and I have never seen this level of outrage on the left about what left-leaning commentators said about me." She didn't provide a specific example of a left-leaning commentator unleashing comments against her anywhere near as offensive as what Limbaugh said about Sandra Fluke.

Al Franken was probably right about this guy all along.

Regarding how the media speaks about women like Palin and herself, Bachmann added: "It seems like there is no level of vitriol that's beyond the pale... You don't see this level of outrage. You certainly don't see advertisers cutting back."

Notably, Bachmann didn't condemn Rush's controversial statements, instead characterizing the main take-away from slut-gate as "on both sides, we want to pay attention to what we're saying." There's a big problem with that line of thinking, though -- since Limbaugh doubled down on his original controversial comments throughout last week, insisting at one point that Fluke post videos of herself having sex online "so we all can watch," it's clear that Rush was paying attention to his words. Maybe he just couldn't help himself, or maybe Al Franken was right all along in characterizing Limbaugh as nothing more than a big fat idiot.
