Bachmann: Left-driven Limbaugh outrage hypocritical

Thumbnail image for bachmann-1.jpg
Bachmann suggested companies wouldn't pull ads if left-leaning commentators called her a "slut" or "prostitute."
During an interview with CNN yesterday, Michele Bachmann discussed the recent Rush Limbaugh slut-gate scandal that has prompted companies to pull advertising from the conservative shock-jock's program.

Bachmann made a case that prominent conservative women, such as herself and Sarah Palin, face similar "vitriol" -- vitriol that receives less attention than it does when directed toward left-leaning women.

Of course, there's a significant difference that line of argument overlooks -- it's one thing for a prominent Republican shock-jock like Limbaugh to call a contraception-supporting woman a "slut" and a "prostitute," but quite another when private citizens make offensive and distasteful comments about females in positions of leadership from behind their computers.

During the interview, Bachmann said: "I have gone through this myself, and experienced more things said about me, and I have never seen this level of outrage on the left about what left-leaning commentators said about me." She didn't provide a specific example of a left-leaning commentator unleashing comments against her anywhere near as offensive as what Limbaugh said about Sandra Fluke.
Rush Limbaugh.jpg
Al Franken was probably right about this guy all along.

Regarding how the media speaks about women like Palin and herself, Bachmann added: "It seems like there is no level of vitriol that's beyond the pale... You don't see this level of outrage. You certainly don't see advertisers cutting back."

Notably, Bachmann didn't condemn Rush's controversial statements, instead characterizing the main take-away from slut-gate as "on both sides, we want to pay attention to what we're saying." There's a big problem with that line of thinking, though -- since Limbaugh doubled down on his original controversial comments throughout last week, insisting at one point that Fluke post videos of herself having sex online "so we all can watch," it's clear that Rush was paying attention to his words. Maybe he just couldn't help himself, or maybe Al Franken was right all along in characterizing Limbaugh as nothing more than a big fat idiot.

Bill Maher defends Rush Limbaugh.

Maher, who is no stranger to starting trouble on Twitter, posted from his page on Tuesday night, “Hate to defend #RushLimbaugh but he apologized, liberals looking bad not accepting. Also hate intimidation by sponsor pullout.”

Hear that?A big Obama supporter say liberals are "looking bad" for not accepting Rush's apology.

ludwigtr
ludwigtr

Yeah, cause all us free thinking Obama supporters are in a cult and walk lock step in line with whatever a tv personality does.

Also, Maher is defending himself, not Rush.  He did something similar so that's his only play in this situation to not look like a hypocritical ass.

Still doesn't make what he said right. There are consequences to one's actions and the words they use.  Saying you're sorry for using two words and doing something that someone else did, when the whole of the 3 day rant was what was offensive to women in general, isn't really an acceptable apology.

Kirk the Conservative Jerk
Kirk the Conservative Jerk

And the people that claim they stand for women's rights now, could have cared less about women being called "sluts" a year ago.

Want Proof?MSNBC Anchor Ed Schultz call Laura Ingraham a "slut" on TV

Ed Schultz-

"And what do the Republicans thinking about? They’re not thinking about their next-door neighbor. They’re just thinking about how much this is going to cost. President Obama is going to be visiting Joplin, Mo., on Sunday but you know what they’re talking about, like this right-wing slut, what’s her name?, Laura Ingraham? Yeah, she’s a talk slut."

go to the liberal blogs. People posting in there thought this was funny and an appropriate way to describe her. They also thought there was no reason for ED to apologize. Go to the same sites today and there is outrage that Rush had done this.Funny ain't it?Turds without any standards...

Yep, that makes what rush did right.  Awesome defense, Kirk.

You are basically pulling the elementary school "But Moooooooooom, Billy hit Jimmy in the face tooooooo!!!"...sounds about the same even.

The issue, in my mind, is NOT so much that Limbaugh called her a "slut".

It is the number of outright LIES that Limbaugh told that makes this case so outrageous.

1) Limbaugh said Fluke was discussing her sex life. She clearly wasn't. She brought up an example of a friend who took birth control pills for a cyst.

2) Limbaugh said she spent $3k a year on birth control. She said it could cost $3k over *three years*.

3) No "taxpayer dollars" are involved here. It's a private insurer paying a claim, yet Limbaugh clearly claimed that she wanted taxpayers to pay her to have sex.

4) Limbaugh claims the issue is about "bad word choice". It's not. It's about deliberate lies being repeated and doubled down upon over the course of days. It's not about some momentary slip of the tongue.

As far as Bachmann, her victim mentality does not come from people telling lies about her. Instead, it's about people correctly pointing out things that she has actually said. She considers this to be "mean", but yet she has no qualms about saying mean things herself about others.

Maybe this will help:  Bachmann is not a slut or a prostitute and she should not make a sex video and post it online.

There are, however, many other areas of reasonable criticism that are fair to apply to Minnesota's favorite off-her-rocker elected official.

Kirk the Conservative Jerk
Kirk the Conservative Jerk

"many other areas of reasonable criticism"???First off, what is "reasonable"?Secondly, "reasonable" to who?I find it "reasonable" for a dog to bark at a cat.  I find it "reasonable" for the anti-christ to criticize those who are godly.Thirdly, "many" implies more than a few; and since a couple is two-three, a few is four-five, and several is at least five, it can be said that "many" implies more five. With that said, you should be able to give me at least six "reasonable criticisms" of her.

Ya I know, your words were chosen for effect and not reality...

"My husband and I have never gotten a penny of money from" a family farm

"The president released all of the oil from the strategic oil reserve"

"One. That's the number of new drilling permits under the Obama administration"

"I will tell you that I had a mother last night come up to me here in Tampa, Florida, after the debate. She told me that her little daughter took that vaccine, that injection, and she suffered from mental retardation thereafter."

"I find it interesting that it was back in the 1970s that the swine flu broke out under another, then under another Democrat president, Jimmy Carter. I'm not blaming this on President Obama, I just think it's an interesting coincidence."

"Carbon dioxide is portrayed as harmful. But there isn't even one study that can be produced that shows that carbon dioxide is a harmful gas."

“It’s your state that fired the shot that was heard around the world, you are the state of Lexington and Concord, you started the battle for liberty right here in your backyard.”

“[W]e also know that the very founders that wrote [the Constitution] worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States.”

Am I at 6 yet...?  I can't tell if I've hit your definition of "many" yet...I find it "reasonable" to criticize an elected official for these comments.  We hold our elected officials to a higher standard than we do our neighbor because they are making decisions that affect their voting base, and with that many lives affected by their decision making, which is related to their level of intellect, they should probably act intelligently, or at least pretend to.

ludwigtr
ludwigtr

That was the second comment she made on that topic, doubling down.  The error of her assertion was that HPV Vaccine causes mental retardation.  Her taking someone's word who is not a medical professional, and repeating that statement as fact, without any evidence of this what-so-ever, twice, deserves criticism.

"The problem is, it comes with some very significant consequences. There’s a woman who came up crying to me tonight after the debate. She said her daughter was given that vaccine. She told me her daughter suffered mental retardation as a result of that vaccine. There are very dangerous consequences. It’s not good enough to take, quote, “a mulligan” where you want a do-over, not when you have little children’s lives at risk."

Carter wasn't president when that happened.

She didn't forget to say "some of".  She doubled down on that statement in a later interview and claimed that John Quincy Adams was a founding father.  If it was a slip up and she meant to say "some of" she would have said that then, as it would have been a perfectly logical and acceptable excuse, but she chose not to do so after criticism.

Care to try again, Kirk?

The injection did not cause mental retardation, which was the insinuation in the context of her speech.

"There's a woman who came up crying to me tonight after the debate. She said her daughter was given that vaccine. She told me her daughter suffered mental retardation as a result of that vaccine. There are very dangerous consequences. It's not good enough to take, quote, 'a mulligan' where you want a do-over, not when you have little children's lives at risk."

Carter wasn't president when that happened...

"some of" was a critical part of that statementWhen asked to defend what she meant, she did not come back to that statement and say she forgot the words "some of".  so I would like to see some form of proof that you know she "forgot" those words in her statement. In reality, she doubled down on her argument, and stated that John Quincy Adams was a founding father that worked to end slavery...apparently when he was about 6 years old.  When in fact, he hadn't mentioned a stance on slavery until about 1823.

Some of those statements are true or can't be proven to be false. and ya, that is what happens when you don't use a teleprompter. So how did any of them statements affect you?Oh they didn't you say.Well, lets try to find something that actually caused harm to you via. legislation.  otherwise you are doing nothing more than denying her her First Amendment Right to sound stupid.

"I will tell you that I had a mother last night come up to me here in Tampa, Florida, after the debate. She told me that her little daughter took that vaccine, that injection, and she suffered from mental retardation thereafter."Did someone NOT say this to her?

"I find it interesting that it was back in the 1970s that the swine flu broke out under another, then under another Democrat president, Jimmy Carter. I'm not blaming this on President Obama, I just think it's an interesting coincidence."Can she NOT have an opinion or ability to reflect on history?

“[W]e also know that the very founders that wrote [the Constitution] worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States.”So, she forgot the words, "some of the" before "very founders"?and ya, the Republicans had a very hard time defeating the Democrats and the Democrats support of slavery.

And this is my personal favorite-"Carbon dioxide is portrayed as harmful. But there isn't even one study that can be produced that shows that carbon dioxide is a harmful gas."So you should stop breathing because your very own breath is harmful?Besides trees LOVE it!

It seems that one doesn't actually have to live in the congressional district one represents/runs for office in, so she doesn't seem to need to do anything.  Assuming that voters don't mind a carpet bagger.

And I though the story on Clark was that she was actually going to move, but I do not know.

Obama stood next to the comedian who made attacks on Palin and Bachmann, all the time Obama laughed. The elite media was in attendance and didn't get up and leave, no they laughed right along. Any one but Obama the worst president ever.

Obama is a hypocrite who has 15,000,000 jobs to make up for to break even. $5 gas at the pump. More dead soldiers coming home in body bags. The only thing the dems can do is distract with this false issue and claim the good things that bush and cheney did. The big increase in oil & gas is from what Obama ran against - and now wants to destroy private enterprise. What Obama controls (government land) oil production is down 11%. The Volt is dead. Maybe Solendra can borrow the government some bucks.

Obama talks to show he is important and the market drops 200 points today. The Obama 2nd recession is coming. Hows that hope and change working for you?

Kirk the Conservative Jerk
Kirk the Conservative Jerk

Ya, isn't that great.  The anti-war crowd now looks the other way when their guy is doing it.   And I say "their guy" because they have shown their true mission and goals by suddenly changing their stance on dead soldiers.  Where the hell is Cindy Sheehan?  She must like the smear of soldier blood now that Obama has it on his hands.   I wonder if CodePink will crash the DNC this year?  Forget I asked that, we know they wont.  Their mission was phony. You might be wasting your time mentioning the stock market drop.  Most here can't and never will understand how markets are emotional.

Kirk has found me out (below). I'm using the Saul Alinsky method of politics. Ha! You liberal left weiners have your heads up obama's a$$. Good for the goose you know.

We have more dead and wounded than during Bush but the press isn't telling you. More body bags in dover, more wounded in bethesda. Obama has killed american citizens without a jury (bush never did this). Obama is using the military against civilians right over in North Dakota. Obama just selected a new head for GITMO. His number 1 priority, day 1 first executive order to close it but now "loves" GITMO.

The blood of babies, the blood of civilians, the blood of our brave troops is on your hands for letting this fool (obama) in as president. F$k U

Kirk the Conservative Jerk

Yes, yes, attack the person when you're loosing says the divot communist Saul Alinsky.

1. "Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have."

2. "Never go outside the expertise of your people. When an action or tactic is outside the experience of the people, the result is confusion, fear and retreat.... [and] the collapse of communication.

3. "Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy. Look for ways to increase insecurity, anxiety and uncertainty. (This happens all the time. Watch how many organizations under attack are blind-sided by seemingly irrelevant arguments that they are then forced to address.)

4. "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules. You can kill them with this, for they can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity."

5. "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counteract ridicule. Also it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage."

6. "A good tactic is one your people enjoy."

7. "A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag. Man can sustain militant interest in any issue for only a limited time...."

8. "Keep the pressure on, with different tactics and actions, and utilize all events of the period for your purpose."

9. "The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself."

10. "The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition. It is this unceasing pressure that results in the reactions from the opposition that are essential for the success of the campaign."

11. "If you push a negative hard and deep enough, it will break through into its counterside... every positive has its negative."

12. "The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative."

13. Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.  In conflict tactics there are certain rules that [should be regarded] as universalities. One is that the opposition must be singled out as the target and 'frozen.'...

No. He spent the entire week reinforcing his statements, and only offered a half-assed backpedaling excuse of an apology after he started losing sponsors.  He did not own up to  it.  He passed the whole thing off as 'an attempt at humor' and played it like it was no big deal.

Shultz immediately admitted that it WAS a big deal, and that he was completely in the wrong.  He did not try to pass it off as a joke, or anything else.  He just manned up and took his lumps.
