Clark Griffith, son of former Twins owner, allegedly unzipped pants, made student squeeze his penis

Griffith's legal career has come crashing down in the wake of the allegations.
Clark Griffith, a Minneapolis attorney and law school instructor whose father, Calvin, owned the Twins until 1984, has lost his job and faces criminal charges following a January incident where he allegedly made a student squeeze his penis.

According to charges filed yesterday, Griffith, 70, built a relationship with a 24-year-old female William Mitchell law student that began as uncomfortable, then bloomed into full-fledged creepy and criminal.

On the evening of January 24, following a meeting at Axel's Bonfire on Grand Avenue, Griffith allegedly walked the student to her car, unzipped his pants, and told the student to squeeze his penis. She did as told, then he kissed her with an open mouth. She reported the incident to William Mitchell administrators the next day, and an investigation proceeded from there.

Griffith told the Pioneer Press the allegations are "ridiculous," adding that there is "nothing to this."

But his actions in the days immediately following the incident seem to contradict his claim of innocence.

From the Star Tribune:
grand avenue.jpg
Griffith allegedly dropped trou on Grand Avenue.
A day after the encounter, alleged to have occurred Jan. 24, the woman reported the incident to law school administrators.

The college then began an investigation that led Griffith to send a text message to the woman Jan. 26 in which he wrote, in part: "It is my fault. Instead of a complaint to the school, you need only tell me. Now I risk life, marriage, career and reputation. ... "

In pleading for her to drop the complaint, Griffith wrote that the hurt his daughters "would suffer is too horrible to consider," the charges say.

Two days later, on Jan. 28, the student returned a call to Griffith at a police investigator's urging, and their eight-minute-plus conversation was recorded.

Griffith again expressed remorse, according to the charges, saying that "my life is over," and he spoke of being in an "absolute daze" when the incident occurred. "I didn't know what I was doing," he allegedly said.

"I came out of it in about 20, 20, or 30 seconds and then I said, 'God, what am I doing?'"
Griffith resigned his teaching job days after the incident. He also backed out of a teaching appointment at Hamline's law school.

There were signs before January 24 that the relationship between the unnamed student and Griffith might be headed down an inappropriate road. Earlier in the winter, Griffith gave her his phone number and said, "this will make your boyfriend jealous if he finds this." Another day, he complimented her "great boots" and "great outfit." He kissed her on the cheek during their second one-on-one meeting before dropping his pants after the third.

From Fox 9:
Around 8:45 p.m. on Jan. 24, Griffith and M.D. settled into a booth at the bar near campus. Griffith asked her to scoot over next to him to review some paperwork, then steered the conversation off sports law and onto an article he read about pornography affecting dating in the younger generation. Griffith then made references to the size of his penis and put his hand on M.D.'s thigh. He later put her hand on his thigh, then over his groin before she pulled away.

"I'm impressed that you did that," Griffith said. "We're going to do that again outside later."

Griffith walked M.D. out to her car, parked on Victoria Street, where he put his hands on her shoulders to position her, then unzipped his pants to expose himself. Griffith again put her hand on his groin and told her to squeeze it, which she did. She also said he kissed her with an open mouth.
Griffith was charged with misdemeanor indecent exposure after Ramsey County attorneys declined to press felony sex assault charges. He faces up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted.

Tangential to the article but relevant to the comment thread, throughout history women have gotten what they wanted by compensating for their smaller size and muscle mass relative to the male by developing a greater capacity for devious, underhanded and manipulative behavior. As alluded to by several posters, the legal system is a perfect example. Women account for the minority of domestic batterers and stalkers, but you never see men abuse the legal system, either out of vengeance, entitlement, or completely misguided feeling of victimhood as women do.

How many times have all of you bitter guys on here gotten rejected to make you hate women so much?  Judging by your comments, it wouldn't take much for a woman to peg you for a pig.  Oink oink.

First of all, what this guy did is creepy and disgusting and he needs to pay for the consequences of his actions. That being said, as a woman, I wouldn't even put myself in this situation by going out with my professor alone, at a bar, at night! Where is the professionalism in that? I say, prevention is better than litigation.

The county attorney declined to press felony sexual assault charges? WHY?? I have said this about attorneys for years, "Honor among theives"! The county attorney is probably hoping that he'll get to represent this low life in his soon to be upcoming divorce case! This is why another favorite of mine is the question, "What do you call 100 attorneys at the bottom of the ocean? A DAMNED GOOD START!"

I have to say this first of all as a dad, and secondly as someone who was raised with a monocum of respect for all people, especially women, I can't believe all the replies I've read here making the girl out to be the bad person/criminal here! Are you guys friggin' kidding me or what? The attitude expressed here by many of the guys is a similar attitude that got a network, New York City, weatherman fired from his job many years ago. There was a story they were covering about a rape case where the woman was also pretty well beaten for resisting during the rape. When the news anchors were ready to turn it over to him for the weather, they asked something like, "What do you think about that", his response was, "She should have just laid there and enjoyed it". So ended the career of a big city network weatherman. One of these days when some of you commenters reach and get out of puberty, and then find someone dumb enough to marry you and want to risk a dip in the gene pool with you, and if you're luccky you'll have a little girl that you'll kill to protect, then and only then will you have even the remotest clue as to what's going on here.

Some very good points by both sides.  I would have to see the penis to be sure of how to judge.

She had the guts to report.  Good for her.  Who knows what else is up with that except he is using his power position to take advantage.  On balance, I would say shoot the bastard.

It really amazes me how easily women can shout rape, abuse, etc. It doesn't matter to the female whether the facts are true. If they get a chance they will f*ck you up for sure. Don't piss em off, I know firsthand.

Did she save the blue dress? What about the cigar? She said, he said. Creepy maybe but no different than Bill Clinton the old law professor with Monica.

She says " he told her the student to squeeze his penis. She did as told" He Says "I kissed her and asked her to touch me" She consented like a young lover.

Just sex for goodness sakes. Just ask Bill Clinton

I thought this was a case of an underage minor or something. A 24 year old should certainly have fought a bit if she didn't want to do it.

Since St. Paul thinks it's so important to prosecute misdemeanors that happened months ago, when will the city attorney be charging the 42 St. Paul cops who creeped on Ann Marie Rasmusson in the driver's license database? Those are misdemeanors, too. In total, they'd have over a hundred counts to file not to mention many more over in Minneapolis. Those charges also would be easier to prove since there's an electronic record of the violation, and many of the offenders have multiple violations to charge.

I'm guessing those cops get a free pass even after taxpayers pay hundreds of thousands, or even millions, in legal fees and settlement costs. So I guess they're not just responsible for enforcing the law, they're also apparently above it.

Zatarra11  But if she said "no I won't suck your dick" - it would be hard for him to lower her grade.  Besides, if he did something that stupid he really would get in trouble and she can ask for independent review of a exam - believe me, I graduated from law school.

What he did was certainly creepy, but she should have been up front with him that she wasn't interested in a sexual relationship with him IMMEDIATELY after the FIRST inappropriate situation.  Why was she playing along to see how far it could go?  Why on Earth would her had reach out to touch his junk unless she was delivering a quick, but sobering jab?  On a related note, I can't even imagine how gross a saggy 70 year old penis would be to the touch.  I'd probably throw up my dinner.

You claim he should be charged with felony assault?  Ok counselor, tell me what the elements of felony assault are?  Oh, you don't know?  that's what I thought.  Maybe we should charge him with murder. That's even better than assault.

Teach your little girl to succeed on her own merits, instead of trying to manipulate men to get what she wants.  Teach her that if she wants to be treated like a grown up she has to act like one.  If she wants to live off her looks she has to live on her back and her knees.  Simple as that.

Jdann12345
Jdann12345

Re-read the story.  She wasn't raped.  She was his date.  He asked to squeeze his love pump, she did.  She's not a child.  She's not a mentally challenged.  She's a woman who can make up her mind if wants to touch a guy's junk.  If she can't make that decision by law school, she should give up 'cause life is a lot more complicated than that.

Jdann12345

Typical response of a "modern man."  I bet you have a t-shirt that says:  "This is what a feminist looks like."  Why do you think the book "Fifty Shades of Grey" is so popular?  Because women are all innocent and pure?  Grow up white knight.  You will not be getting laid standing up for the wimminiz.  They laugh at beta weaklings like you.  You'll get a lot more action flashing your genitalia and asking her to touch it.

Women and children are held to the same standard in this country.  "Women and children first".  There is a reason for that saying.  I am surprised the courts haven't held yet that women aren't capable of forming the requisite intent to commit a crime at all.  She didn't even say "no" according to the story.  She did it.  So, now, if you ask a woman to have sex with you and she does, she can come back later and say she didn't want to so you can be arrested. That is exactly the standard that applies to minors (rightfully so).

Zatarra11
Zatarra11

Yeah, I agree Jdann.  I understood your meaning right after I posted.  I was thinking of it the other way.  Under anonymous grading he clearly couldn't have threatened her grade but he could have given her a "A" with a plan.  I graduated from law screwal too.

If that's the case, then why did he immediately act like (and admit) guilt?  He knew what he was doing - using his position to coerce sex - was wrong.  If he knew and admitted it was wrong, why can't you?

Jdann12345

'Cause there are a lot of law school grads who can't find work.  She probably strung him along to see if he could help her get a job.  I'm just speculating, but what else would a 20 something have in common with a 70 year old man?  She probably never planned to sleep with him, she just let him believe that she might sleep with him.  Sexual politics is as old as dirt.

Zatarra11

She probably led him on for a while and then demanded a "A" and he denied her request.  She then got upset and decided to report him.

I am wondering why the City of St. Paul is spending time and money on this. Don't we have bigger crime issues than this?

It wasn't a date. She was working on a legal clinic, probably for completing her long paper, and they met at a place that people from WMCL commonly meet. Adjunct faculty don't usually have offices, so it would seem pretty reasonable for him to say "let's just meet at X", because that place is only two blocks away from school.

How about actually reading the whole story instead of the parts you want to use to push your argument that she's an evil slut?

Jeff Anderson
Jeff Anderson

The problem is he isn't being charged with sexual assault. It's indecent conduct whether it was voluntary or not. So if she jerked him off in public, apparently he would have been committing a crime but she wouldn't? Which is totally ridiculous. Would she have been charged if it were the other way around? I'm going to really, really doubt it.

So the cops and prosecutors over there may be prudish and vindictive, but they're not totally stupid. I would like to know why the woman is entitled to remain anonymous though. She wasn't sexually assaulted.

Phoenix
Phoenix

Again, if he's oh-so-innocent, why did he admit guilt?  Why do you and all the other apologists for him act as if she was this frickin' Jezebel who seduced him?  Why do your eyes seem incapable of missing his lengthy admission of guilt?

Guilty?  Of What?  She touched his junk.  He doesn't want his wife and colleagues to know.   Probably doesn't want them to know he was at a bar with a young woman who is not his wife.  He owes an explanation to his wife, but that's it.  The bimbo he was at the bar with is not a victim, she was his date.

"The legal system in this country always grants custody to the woman, always believes the woman's story, and always arrests the man."Always is incorrect. Many men get custody of their children, cops don't always believe a women's story (investigations are done) but I don't know about all men being arrested, I'll have to do some research.

This was meant for Zatarra11, sorry.

I believe the sexes should be treated equally.  Equal means equal.  Not preferential treatment towards women.  Females need to take some accountability.  The legal system in this country always grants custody to the woman, always believes the woman's story, and always arrests the man.  What did he do here?  He asked her to touch his penis.  Had this been a jock in her class she would probably have done it--oh wait she actually did do it here.  She just regretted it the next day.  The guy I know who gets the most women does this all the time-- and it works.  Then it would be end of story.
