Minneapolis flash mob beatings: Victim's mother details St. Patrick's Day attack

Pieter in the hospital after he was brutally beaten by a mob of young people.
Reached at home, Pieter's mother explains that her son is resting. Pieter is recovering from a brain injury suffered when he was attacked by a group of 20 to 30 young people in downtown Minneapolis shortly after 11 p.m. on St. Patrick's Day night and can't talk on the phone until he gets a few more hours of rest.

But Pieter's mom Grace knows the story of what happened that night inside and out. It's a story that has unfolded disturbingly often recently -- since the start of February, "flash mobs" have struck with violence in downtown Minneapolis six times.

Three of the attacks have resulted in injuries, but Pieter's are by far the most severe. After he was attacked, doctors at HCMC struggled to contain swelling in his brain. The possibility of Pieter needing open-brain surgery hung over the family until 7 a.m. the next morning, when doctors finally concluded it wouldn't be necessary. Pieter, 27, is now in the early stages of a slow recovery from his injuries, but it's still too early to know whether he'll ever bounce back completely.

Pieter and his 23-year-old nephew were out downtown to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. They were hanging out at Kieran's, and decided to head back to their hotel room on the other side of downtown around 11. While walking to their room, Pieter and his nephew were "blindsided" by "20 to 30 juveniles."

Blood was splattered on the sidewalk shortly after Pieter and his nephew were beaten near 7th & Marquette.

Grace said a Wells Fargo security guard saw part of the incident and later told police that the mob repeatedly kicked Pieter while he lay on the ground helplessly. When the beating finally ceased, Pieter was left with a bloody face, no short-term memory, and significant brain injuries.

Pieter worked as a visual artist and graphic designer before the attack. He's home from the hospital now and staying with his mother. As he couldn't do in the hours immediately following the beatdown, he now remembers his name and is regaining some mobility. Yet he can't drive or go outside by himself, and his brain is still swollen. But Grace is optimistic Pieter is on the road to recovery.

As for the assailants? Both Pieter and his nephew have said the attack commenced so unexpectedly, they really can't remember anything about the young people who beat them mercilessly. "It happened so fast [Pieter] can't remember anything about them," Grace said.

Thankfully, a surveillance camera caught the incident on tape. That video is now in the custody of Minneapolis police, but no arrests have yet been made in connection with Pieter's beating.

Sgt. Steve McCarty of the Minneapolis Police Department said investigators are currently looking into possible connections between the string of incidents that has downtown Minneapolis on edge and Pieter facing a long recovery from devastating injuries.

-- Pieter's last name wasn't disclosed at the request of his family.

The message these little vagabonds should be getting is that occasionally you get shot. Ask Trayvon Martin. You get that message Jr. and he won't have died in vain.

A HORRIFYING FACT:

Please grasp the fact that a sizable percent of the black population hate white people. Further, if they thought they could get away with it, they would kill white people.

They would not just kill you.

They would kill your white spouse and white children.

Yes, they would gleefully kill your children.

It's legal to carry a gun in Minnesota, in the open air. In fact you could holster a rifle to your back and walk around if you could.  I mean really you can. For real. Try it.

I worked downtown at night for years, I saw multiple attacks happen, almost always with race being the factor. If you think the police take this seriously you are wrong. In one case a witnessed a man getting beaten badly after trying to stop people from stealing items from his car, one of the assailants ran past me and I told the policeman I certainly could identify him and gave him my number. The hostess at our restaurant even got the licence plate of the car they left in.  Several months later I saw the man who was beaten, he told me the police went to the house of the car owner and it was a woman who said that her son had a party that night and someone took her car, but she does know who. The police never called me to have me identify anyone. The police told the victim " don't worry, they will do something serious one day and get in real trouble".

That's not a flash mob, that's a riot. Flash mobs are supposed to bring joy.

My name is Roman and I also am a victim of these " flash mob beatings". My accident happened on the 24th of march. I was beat down by 10 plus samolians now I am in a neck brace with a fractured t1 in my back. Now I can't pick up my 8 month old daughter I lost my job. This is so sad that these little gang bangers don't have anything better to do. I want justice. They really should release the videos and maybe we can start to put a stop to this.

This should be a hate crime and these types of crimes should be minimum 10 years prison time.

Hey racists, here's a little insight into human psychology: the racist shit you're spouting is just reinforcing this negative behavior.  You think these kids really wanna confront the reasons they're commiting these crimes?  Hell no. Self-awareness is as hard for them as it is for you.

Agree that the public should definitely see the tape and police should request the help of the public to identify the perps.

Why is it that if an Asian got beaten by Mobs, it's like nothing. Seems like we Asians here in United states are just plain nothing. If it is White or Black person bot beaten, it will be such a big big news. Why is that?

I work Security downtown and this is one of MANY incidents I have heard about that night involving "youths or young people". Every attack was unprovoked and senseless. These "youths" should be found and put away for a VERY long time and they or there parents should be sued. Now I remember why I love my permit to carry.

Love all the racial overtones in this comment section.  It's never about the crime, always about the race of who did what on almost every comment section of MN media outlets.  Minnesota nice my ass. lol And then you have the nerve to resent the outrage over an unarmed young Black kid who is 6 ft under while his murderer roams freely with his gun. Pathetic.

I think we all know what the solution to this problem is.....we need to increase taxes so that black youth have more access to Blackberries, IPods, and $200 basketball shoes.  Only then will America become a better place for all.  P.S. There are homeless Veterans who have sacrificed their lives so that black people can collect "free shit" and they are going without food tonight...but don't mind them....it is much more important for to give blacks EBT.....because, you know....they earned it............

Hey -- how about we stop calling these "flash mob" incidents and start calling it what it really is: terrorism.

Last I checked, being afraid to simply go about your day-to-day life for fear of getting seriously injured or killed by an organized group of a-holes isn't the same thing as a group of knuckleheads dancing to Thriller in Times Square. Bring terrorism charges on these "people" (being VERY generous with that label) -- this is unacceptable!

The victim’s Mom shared her story today at City Pages too.http://blogs.citypages.com/blotter/20... contact the MPD, the mayor, the city council, etc to spur them to action!

And more thing....why isn't this being investigated as a hate crime?  The victim sure looks like a minority to me.  Oh let me guess.....it's only a hate crime when a non-black person commits a crime against a black person.  When black flash mobs commit violence against others, we just chalk it up as "oh......these are just kids acting stupid....."

Perhaps Spike Jones would be kind enough to tweet the home addresses of the perps.....

Not that I fault CityPages for bringing me this news, but seriously - how does this just slip by local news stations&papers? It seems something like this would be in the public's interest to know about as a safety issue and serious crime issue.

And Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are on a flight to Minneapolis right now to speak with the victim of this obviously racially-motivated attack, and will seek justice for the perpetrators who committed this horrendous crime and......

Just Kidding!!  :)

Pieter is my dear friend. Please spread the word to watch WCCO during their 5pm broadcast tonight regarding his story too. And consider taking a few minutes out of your day to send a call for action to Chief Tim Dolan at police@minneapolismn.gov and Mayor RT Rybak at http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.u.... These senseless attacks have got to stop! Please help to make downtown safe again!

Terrible.  Awful.  Hope he recovers completely.  I can't even imagine the hospital bills for something like that.  All because a bunch of thugs want to have some fun.  They put down dogs who commit vicious, unprovoked attacks like that.

Stupid Thugs!  Throw the book at them!  Make an example out of them. To the Victim's Family - sue the hell out of anyone they catch!  If they are juveniles - sue the parents!   If they are young adults and are broke - sue them anyways and then garnish their wages for the rest of their lives!

I agree with Library Paige. These kinds of images and stories should be released if on tape. The news is the news lets make it that!

Librarypaige

Why don't surveillance tapes get released to the public of incidences like these? It would be beneficial for the public to see some of these faces doing the crime and to be aware of the catastrophes that can ensue.
