Obama signs Stillwater bridge bill after Klobuchar, Bachmann write him letter

Could this be the start of a beautiful friendship? My Magic 8 Ball says "outlook not so good."
Michele Bachmann and Amy Klobuchar aren't on the same page often, but they both agree the Stillwater area needs a new bridge to Wisconsin.

Their agreement was so strong that they even joined forces to write President Obama a letter seeking his "prompt signature" on a bill approving the new bridge's exemption from the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.

Today, Obama did just that, meaning that after years of political wrangling, the $690 million bridge will indeed be constructed, with work slated to begin in 2014.

In what was perhaps a sign that Obama hasn't forgotten all the times Bachmann bashed him during her ill-fated presidential run, a White House statement praised Klobuchar's "efforts to pass this bipartisan legislation," but did not mention Bachmann, who led a late surge to get the exemption through the House.
Work on the $690 bridge will begin in earnest in 2014.

Shockingly, however, Bachmann for once actually emerged from Obama's slight looking like the bigger person, saying after the signing that she "commend(s) the president for signing this important piece of legislation."

The exemption was opposed by U.S. Reps. Keith Ellison and Betty McCollum, with the latter calling the bridge "fiscally irresponsible" and "a boondoggle." But the drive to replace the aging Stillwater lift bridge with a new highway-style one from Oak Park Heights into St. Joseph, Wisconsin has generally received bipartisan support, including from Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Mark Dayton.

Michele Bachmann and Amy Klobuchar? Scott Walker and Mark Dayton? With those sets of unlikely allies rallying behind it, it looks like this new Stillwater bridge is the most popular thing in Minnesota and Wisconsin this side of Bon Iver.

Why does MN need to foot the bill for this? Drive down Main St Stillville and you'll see the unending stream of Wis plates. They clearly need to cross at SW more than we do. MN Side= Stillwater, the Cities, shopping, airports, stuff. Wis side= Nothing. Fields. Ok, I'll give them Sunday beer.

Oh, what's that you say? An 8 lane span just 5 miles south, and another 4 lane span just 10 miles north? Yes. clearly Mn needs to spend $700 M on another bridge to Wisconsin.

Don't tell me this is about jobs. Unless you're a short term/contract construction laborer. Bridges don't create anything more than a bridge. (see new 35W Span over Miss river. Jobs? Yeah, there were some. All done now tho. It's how it works.)

Let's see, Dayton & Walker, Bachmann and Klobuchar work together to get the bridge.Obama is petty as usual. You know he leads by example but at least he signed it.

I understand the old bridge will be left in place, allowing people to bike or walk across the river.

What I don't understand is why Reps. Keith Ellison and Betty McCollum are against Minnesota WORKERS and JOBS?

They were against it simply because it was a Republican proposal and BOTH have received a boatload of money from the "Sierra Club".

Idiocy is easily explained when you follow the money...

and ya you're right; according to liberal logic, their opposition to these UNION jobs means they must HATE unions and want their families to die.

You make zero sense. Try thinking.

They were in support of a different bridge plan that would be cheaper and less detrimental to the river's ecosystem. Not against workers or jobs.

How is questioning the building a redundant bridge to Wisconsin, on a environmentally sensitive ecosystem, "idiocy". Please explain. Have you crossed the river at Stillwater? You know what's on the other side? Literally nothing. New Richmond probably the biggest concern, and it's 20 miles away. When I go to NR, I take 94. So inconvenient, it's 5 miles away!

I'm not in favor of a new bridge. It's spending MN taxpayer money with no return. Someone who wants to do an exhaustive study on how long MN will need to recoup the $$ spent solely on the spending habits of WI residents who work and shop in the cities, I'm all ears.

$700 M on a bridge that will serve the people of MN so little. That's the point here, not that Sierra Club lobbied Klobachar or whatever. If you want to go down the "politicians bought by lobbyists" road, however, you'll have your ass handed to you. Republicans are complete utter money whores who are bought and sold. Politicians with ethics and morals found on the left side of the spectrum.

In closing, "wallah" is not a word. Use the french vernacular for "there it is" properly or not at all.

Kirk, thanks for sharing that website.

It looks like Ellison has received $3254 from Sierra Club in the entire time he's been in Congress with McCollum receiving $780 in the same timespan (she did receive a lot more from them in previous election cycles, though). Significant amounts, to be sure. But not exactly boatloads, compared to the huge sums they received from Unions that could, by your assertion, benefit from the costlier bridge plan that passed.

But even still, construction projects like this one are temporary and do not provide long-term job solutions.

I heard if we spend 700 billion we will keep unemployment under 8 % (oops that was Obama). I guess your right, Obama doesn't make sense spending billions on shovel ready jobs or solar companies.

Better see who is getting the bid, they must be paying all the other politicians.

Yeah, I heard they wanted to use barge's with union long shoremen handling the lines.

Keith Ellison and Betty McCollum are under the influence of lobbyists and against Minnesota WORKERS and JOBS?

They are bought and paid for by the Sierra Club. And people that partisan would never agree to a Republican plan.

"Not against workers or jobs." you say.  Wouldn't a more complex and expensive bridge bring more money to the worker and their unions?  When liberal logic falls short...

"environmentally sensitive ecosystem"Are you kidding?  And a bridge will do what to it?Wow, another goof against progress.I will think of you and this "environmentally sensitive ecosystem" the next time I'm pissing in the St. Croix from the back of my buddy's Fountain offshore racing boat next summer.

And I think this exhaustive study you ask for has allready been done.  It was one of the demands from the clowns at the Sierra Club and their democrat puppets in congress.

Furthermore, you have chosen to attack my usage of words.  It must feel good to be able to use that worthless knowledge from time to time.   And BTW, so Alinsky of ya...
