Republican Phil Hansen, former NFL star, running for Minnesota Senate

Hansen notched over 60 sacks during his NFL career. He now hopes to sack Dems in the Minnesota Senate.
Former North Dakota State and Buffalo Bills football standout Phil Hansen is running for the Minnesota Senate as a Republican.

Hansen, 43, is running in Senate District 4, which covers Clay and Norman counties as well as parts of Becker County, including Detroit Lakes, in northwestern Minnesota.

A native of Oakes, North Dakota, Hansen has lived in Detroit Lakes with his wife and children since his career as a defensive end came to a close following the 2001 season. He owns a small landscaping and snow plowing company, works as a color commentator for NDSU's football team, and runs youth fitness camps.

Sen. Keith Langseth, D-Glyndon, has held the seat Hansen is running for since 1980. Langseth isn't seeking re-election.

Hansen owns a small business, and said "it's the entrepreneurs, the business owners who move things forward, not government."

In announcing his candidacy at a Detroit Lakes coffee shop yesterday, Hansen characterized himself as a moderate Republican, saying "I'm a responsible Republican, and a reasonable Republican."

He said he's a fiscal conservative who will make budget discipline a top priority.

"You live on a balanced budget, whether you're a business or a family," he said. "It's common sense, you pay as you go."

Hansen, who has a degree in agricultural economics from NDSU and was inducted into the Buffalo Bills' Wall of Fame last fall, deflected questions about specific issues facing Minnesota lawmakers, saying he'd prefer to talk about them after he's had more time to formulate his own views.

Phil Hansen was an awesome player. One of my childhood heroes. I endorse his candidacy. He is the second Greatest Defensive End in Buffalo Bills history as proven by his Sack totals and being on the Bills Wall of Fame. Great Player that will make a Great State Senator.

If he isn't a religious zealot with a nasty, trash-talking attitude and a love of tormenting anyone not straight, white, married, and upper-middle-class, the GOP won't want him.  That's the area that's sent Gretchen Hoffman to St. Paul, among others.

Hansen wasn't a very good player. Dude can only run to the right...

Sure, because the time to figure out what you think is after you've announced your candidacy!
