Trayvon Martin rally at U of M expects 5,000

Jenny Belsito was outraged when she first heard the story of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed 17-year-old who was gunned down by a neighborhood watchman in Florida.

The Metro State student threw up a Facebook page announcing a local One Million Hoodies march, the campaign named after Geraldo Rivera infamously declared that Martin made himself a target by wearing a hoodie.

"I invited my friends and I thought it would be a couple dozen people," she says.

But the invite started spreading like wildfire.

As of this writing, the Facebook invite to the march has 5,072 RSVPs, with another 1,100 tentative participants. Belsito says she's been working with campus police to get the right permits, and that they've offered to set up portable bathrooms for tonight's event. She says this cooperation is important to her, since the point of the rally is not to come down on local cops.

"There' s no specific issue with the local police, I just think that racial profiling happens all the time," she says. "This is a good time to start looking at these problems."

The march has also attracted some prominent speakers. Belsito says the event will kick off with remarks from Marcus Harcus, a candidate for House District 58A. Brother Ali is also expected to be at the March and Belsito says he's asked to say a few words as well.

"Great hoodie weather today," Ali posted on his Facebook page. "SEE YOU THERE!"

The march convenes tonight at Northrop Plaza at 6 p.m. Belsito says that she's excited about the potentially huge turnout, but also hoping that the night goes smoothly.

"I'm hoping we can get the message across this is a peaceful rally," she says. "This is not a protest."

What about the Caucasian kid who was set on fire in Kansas City on March 4 by two African American teens who said to him, "You get what you deserve, white boy."? Where's the rally for him? Where's the outrage? Stretch this Trayvon nonsense into a racial hate-crime all you want. In the meantime, I'll be watching my white back... and throwing out all my hooded sweatshirts. Let's hear it for mob mentality, kids...!

Fools all whopped up over nothing.  I can't see this man as a racist or doing this because of a racial bias.  Fact is Zimmerman tutored underprivileged youth on weekends. (including black kids wearing hoodies)

This is nothing more than a attempt by the race baiters to divide America.Yes, nothing more than a "look over here" moment.  At times like this, we need to pay attention to what the other hand is doing.  (like in a magic act)

If Ted Kennedy had drowned a black kid in a hoodie, would that make the left not like him or would that also have been okay?

White people play the race card more then BLACK people! This is not about race (even though most of You want it to be) This is about injustice, fact of the matter IS if Trayvon would have killed Zimmercoward Trayvon would be in jail right now and tried as a adult! The rest of the stuff talked about is pure ignorance!!!!Good night.

This sounds more like clothing profiling rather than racial profiling.

Racial profiling happens for a reason.

All the anonymous racist posts on the Trayvon murder are getting more than tiresome. This is naked hate crawling out from under its rock, pissing and shitting on everyone and everything that doesn't meet with their approval.

Dogs mark their territory with more class. I just hope City Pages is checking out the commenters' ISP details to see how many are coming from organized hate fronts (Stormfront, Free Republic, Anoka County Republicans, etc.).

Is it me or did this story unnecessarily blow up.  People around the country get killed for no reason every day.  I'm not understanding why this story is so different.  It sucks it happened but  it sounds like another senseless killing.  Although if what the killer says is true, to shoot is the last resort. He could of pulled the gun out and that would of ended it. But if kid started a fight with someone, he shouldn't be honored across the country.  There are many more that take priority in being honored. And Geraldo will say anything to get controversy stirred up.

Seems as though this the same Dakota County snowflake Jenny Belsito that got herself some dark meat in the form of Trevor Mbawke, decided that she didn't want her 1% outer-burbs daddy to know about it, and slapped a restraining order on Mbwake.  Apparently, Jenny has a not-so-secret infatuation with the Brothers and is a media whore to boot.

Um, because teens fighting with other teens in a decaying urban setting is not exactly the same thing as a grown man with a gun stalking a teenager walking home from the store in an affluent small town?

By your logic, that means missionaries can't be racists.

I think history would disagree.

I also note that you waited until CP removed "Johnny's" hideously racist rant before you left a comment. Why's that?

The fact is the original lead off comment was so nakedly racist, hardly anyone left comments until it was taken down and given all the whites rights folks who've been commenting here lately, that's saying something.

Get your facts right dude. Jenny and trevor live together. No restraining order. And her dad is currently a middle school teach, hardly the 1%.

Well, I don't blame her. White people are responsible for every problem, black people have never done anything wrong (until they try to escape the plantation shack I've shingled with foodstamps and cadillac hood ornaments), and I've got some crazy cracker-stomping jungle fever right now. Dark meat? Yes please!

Also: All conservatives are 3/5 of a person (the openly Christian ones like 1/8), I'm directly conspiring with my personal friend M.S. Media to destroy you and America (preferably through vegetable sodomy and/or windmill beheadings), I want to replace all guns with dildos filled with real sperm, and I meet once a year with 98% of the world's climate scientists for a combination ice cream party/Global Warming scam refresher course.

To be honest, my entire political philosophy (and that of every pukegressive - even though they'll never admit it) is just to make life hard on self-determined, hard-working white people who have never profited from a system created and continued by people who look just like them.

Whew; it feels good to acknowledge my biases. I typically look at every article knowing full well what I think and believe before reading it, and strain myself to spin the content to support those beliefs without admitting my subjective prejudices and hatreds. Shocking, right?

It gets hard, you know, to battle reality so fiercely in the face of overwhelming evidence against my assertions, so I just wanted to apologize.

But I'm still coming for you. You and America.

If this comment doesn't make sense, it's because "Johnny's" original comment was finally removed by City Pages for being libelous. I'd like to think that the fact the comment was also hideously racist had something to do with it, but this is the first comment I've seen removed here despite a recent upsurge in racist comments that has made CP's comments read like Stormfront's.
