DeLeSalle student, during anti-gay school assembly, holds up sign: "I love my moms"

Archbishop John Nienstedt's representatives were received less than enthusiastically by DeLaSalle seniors.
In today's Strib, Jon Tevlin details a recent anti-gay marriage presentation made by representatives of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis to DeLaSalle seniors.

While making the case that homosexuality is wrong, a priest and Catholic volunteer couple suggested that kids who are adopted or live with single parents are "less than" kids with two parents of the opposite sex. Presenters also compared homosexuality to beastiality, according to Tevlin.

Located in Minneapolis, DeLaSalle High School is "a Catholic High school in the Lasallian tradition." But if school officials thought DeLaSalle's Catholic identity would prevent students from responding indignantly to the presenters' comments, they had another thing coming.

Said DeLaSalle senior Matt Bliss: "When they finally got to gay marriage, [students] were really upset." One student held up a sign reading, "I love my moms."

"You could look around the room and feel the anger," Bliss said. "My friend who is a lesbian started crying, and people were crying in the bathroom."

After presenters made the homosexuality-beastiality comparison, a student interjected, "you didn't just compare people to animals, did you?" Another student said many of her fellow seniors recognized the political impetus behind the presentation, noting that younger students weren't required to attend the assembly because they won't be able to vote this fall.

Jim Benson, DeLaSalle vice principal, said "90 percent" of the presentation "was well received." But his observation is contradicted by the way the presentation concluded -- with the priest and school officials abruptly ending the assembly as tough questions from the students rained down.

Almost all the comments on Tevlin's column applaud the students for taking the Catholics to task. Here's a taste:
Tevlin De gay presentation comments.jpg

DeLaSalle seniors and Star Tribune commenters aside, polling indicates Minnesotans are split evenly on the marriage amendment. In late January, Public Policy Polling found that the amendment is "headed for a close vote," with 48 percent of voters in favor of banning same-sex marriage and 44 percent opposed.

Nobody should have the right to vote whether gays should get married or not. Gay-marriage SHOULD NOT be an issue. I don't understand why it is such a problem anymore... It's not like gays are affecting anyone anyone in a negative way. We just want to live a normal life like everyone else. And frankly, religion should NOT be all about race or sexuality. Instead, it should be more about loving each other and accepting people for who they really are. Period.

I applaud the strongly anti-bigotry stance taken in the comments above, but I do wish people would stop claiming that anti-gay attitudes aren't "the true teachings of the word." They most certainly are. The BIble repeatedly says that gays should be KILLED. The real question is, who cares what the Bible says? This is the 21st century, and we don't need to check our morality against a millennia-old collection of tribal beliefs and rituals. The fact that modern Christians ignore those parts shows that they already put their own moral judgements over the Bible's. Good for them. Let's have more of that.

I was raised as a catholic, attended catholic school until I graduated from High School.  I'm still amazed of the hypocrisy prevalent in the Catholic Church then and now. Kids were molested by pedaphiles protected by the Church hierarchy at that time and ever since. I don't beleive in the Catholic Church anymore until they let their priests marry and they leave a normal, healthy life. They believe sex is a sin and demonize those who practice it. My wife and I left the Curch after several incidents. We lost our twins  and another son, our daughter was born on the 24 week of my wife's pregnancy and we were told she would not survive. She was a micropremie and weighing only 1 lb. 3 oz. We spent 4 month in the Neonatal Care Unit at the hospital  seeing her grow in front of our eyes. We asked a priest to baptize her, we beleive then that she needed to be baptize to go to Heaven. They refuse, all priests we asked refused. God wanted to prove them wrong and he did, by the Grace of Our Lord our daughter is turning 16 yo this coming friday and she is a healthy beautiful person. She is our miracle baby! I know in my heart the Catholic Chrch is not the church of our Lord Jesus Christ, he predicade and thought us to love,NOT TO HATE! I don't believe in the Pope anymore, he is not infallible. Homosexuals are God's creatures, created and loved by him just like the rest of us. We shouldn't  condemn people for being different , God gave us two kids: a girls and a boy. If any of them tells me he/she is gay. I would love them no less, on the contrary I will try to be there for them because I know this world is full of bad people that will try to make their life miserable just for loving someone of the same sex. We should follow Christ and forget about Churches, at the end all churches are run by humans. They are wrong!

Stories like this one give me so much hope for the future! If a group of Catholic school kids can stand up against bigotry and hate that they've likely been fed their whole lives (I was one of them for the first half of my childhood), I truly believe this generation will be the one to finally break down the rest of the barriers to civil rights for all. Way to be awesome guys! And isn't it a good feeling that you asked such hard-hitting questions that you intimidated them into shutting the assembly down? Be proud!!!

It's because of assholes like Nienstedt that my trans girlfriend and I won't be able to get married in state. Not that either of us are thinking about marriage, but it still irks her not to have that option open. Unless she can get a court order to get her birth certificate changed, we'd probably end up taking a road trip to Iowa. So yeah, fuck you too Nienstedt, and fuck all your little homophobic friends. I'm not even gay but this affects me too.

Gay marriage is wrong but a priest can molest and rape a boy behind closed doors, I don't think so.  This has been going on for centuries and the church plays their games and try to keep their dirty little secrets hidden.  I saw down with organized religion and up with equality for everyone.

Catholics are filling a church on Saturday, April 28, to "sing" their acceptance of lgbt kids and their opposition to the hurtful anti-marriage amendment. Join us young and old for this powerful moment! That day was crazy. I am a freshman at De and all I heard throughout the day was all the seniors ranting on about the horrible presentation. I did not understand what it was about but now that I have read this article it really opens my eyes.

The Archdiocese spent upwards of $600,000 last year in supporting the gay marriage ban.  Wouldn't that money be better spent on education and helping the poor?

Good for the students for speaking up against ridiculous assertions. If Catholic leaders are wondering why their numbers are dwindling, they have only themselves to blame.

Actually, the bible never says that. Paul says stuff along those lines, but aside from the story of Sodom (which is more about a cult association than the actual homosexuality), there is only one anti-homosexual verse directly from god. Leviticus 22:18, "Man shall not lay with man as he lays with woman, for it is an abomination".

As a buddhist agnostic, I need to know these things :) gotta know what I'm up against.

Yep, in the original Bible there was Adam, Lilith, Eve, and another unnamed woman. That means that polygamy is okay with God, so I don't see why they compare homosexuality, which they believe to be wrong, to polygamy, which is okay. They really need to study their own religion before preaching it.

but the archdiocese are leaders of the church. That's like saying the pope being a bigoted, closed-minded ass is not indicative of Catholics. Sorry, but it is. If the leaders of your religion are bigoted, and preach that bigotry in their religion; then the religion is, by extension, also bigoted.

Simon Johnston

That's the frightening thing. Their overt bigotry under cloak of religion is actually being presented as education. The sick, twisted world of catholic authority.

The Roman Catholic Church donates the most time, money, and charity of ALL organizations and continues to be ranked #1 as the largest charity of the world. Catholic Charities alone consist of 1,400 agencies that run soup kitchens, temporary shelters, child care, and refugee resettlement --> and this isn't just for Catholics, but for EVERYONE in need.

The reference is actually Leviticus 20:13, and most translations advocate violence against homosexual males (apparently God is OK with lesbians):

If a man also lie with mankind, as hee lyeth with a woman, both of them haue committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shalbe vpon them.- King James Version (1611)'If {there is} a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them.- New American Standard Version (1995)And if a man lie with mankind, as with womankind, both of them have committed abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.- American Standard Version (1901)And if a man has sex relations with a man, the two of them have done a disgusting thing: let them be put to death; their blood will be on them.- Basic English BibleAnd if a man lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall certainly be put to death; their blood is upon them.- Darby BibleIf any one lie with a man se with a woman, both have committed an abomination, let them be put to death: their blood be upon them. - Douay Rheims BibleIf a man also shall lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. - Webster's Bible'If a man lies with a male, as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.- World English Bible`And a man who lieth with a male as one lieth with a woman; abomination both of them have done; they are certainly put to death; their blood [is] on them.- Youngs Literal BibleAnd if a man lie with mankind, as with womankind, both of them have committed abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.- Jewish Publication Society Bible

Nah, it's like saying the President is a reflection on all Americans...Catholics are people who believe in God and try to do good in their lives. Their leaders do not reflect all Catholics.

Hailey

Just because the leaders of a group are a certain way, it's wrong to label an entire group of people based on that. Excuse me if anyone here is a Bush supporter but as an example, President George W. Bush was often viewed as an idiot who did not know left from right. Does that mean that everyone in the United States is the same? There are several terrorist groups that follow Islam, does that make all Muslims terrorists? I am not Catholic nor do I have any desire to be, but judging a group of people by a select few is rather close minded and I couldn't stay quiet when I read the reply to this student's comment. Please consider what I've said before you go openly judging someone again.

" and this isn't just for Catholics, but for EVERYONE in need"WOW - such ignorance! About your own church, no less! Are you a PR flack, or are you seriously this detached from reality?I take it you have never actually bothered to find out if your bizarre claims are actually true - that you just want to believe it, therefore it must be...Well sorry, kiddo: how about you put a bit of trust in your faith, and try a bit of honesty for once? The real world might be a bit of a disappointment for you, but the truth is not hard to locate. Reality does not paint the church in the pretty rosy way you want to view it as, but facts are facts. Young children are still being raped, your beloved institution is still protecting them, and at the same time draining the resources of the poor everywhere they are. You may think that 'giving' to the community a pittance - a tiny proportion of what it's taken out - is a great and wonderful thing, but no serious, fair minded person whose interest is the community and not the institution of the catholic church, would.

JJ

Well, that is something that an entity such as the church should be doing, especially when you look at the difference between how much money the church gains in a year, and how many taxes it pays....you know what I mean?

And somehow this excuses covering up pedophilia, using anti-gay rhetoric, accusing civil rights groups of being bigots because they want equal rights (not more rights, just equal rights) the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition... Need I keep going? I think not. Hitler was a vegetarian who never cheated on his significant other, and gave us the Autobahn. That doesn't excuse him killing 12 million people, now does it?

That doesn't invalidate what Eric said at all, though. All it does is show that they took funds that could've supported charitable projects like those you just listed, and instead funneled them towards a hateful campaign instead of further helping others.

They SHOULD...that is the function of a CHURCH and a CHARITY. (funny how it's not considered a redistribution of wealth).  They should NOT also be preaching hate rhetoric and comparing human beings who LOVE each other to people who sexually abuse animals....while doing fuck all for CHILDREN who are being sexually abused by PRIESTS...  The Roman Catholic Church was more wealth squirreled away than GOD...certainly enough to make the eye of that needle look pretty small.

A flawed analogy.  I don't choose the President.  I do choose where to worship.
