Gary Tinsley death: Gophers senior linebacker dead at 22 [UPDATE]

Golphers linebacker Gary Tinsley was found dead this morning.
This morning, news circulated of a University of Minnesota student found dead at the Roy Wilkins Hall dormitory.

Shortly thereafter, Gophers basketball player Chip Armelin tweeted: "Rest In Peace to Gary Tinsley, Senior Linebacker For The Gophers." Later reports confirmed Tinsley was indeed the student found dead in the dorms.

Just days ago, The Bleacher Report characterized Tinsley as the team's "best defensive player for the last two seasons."

Prior to emerging on the field during his junior and senior season, Tinsley had a couple scrapes with the law. Most seriously, during the spring following his sophomore season, he was charged with two felonies and suspended from the team after fleeing police on his moped while intoxicated. But in recent years Tinsley seemed to turn his personal life around and news of his death was received with an outpouring of sadness from the University of Minnesota community.

Fox 9, reporting the student death at Roy Wilkins Hall dormitory, wrote that "no foul play is suspected and police don't believe alcohol or drugs contributed to the death." Police later characterized Tinsley's death as "suspicious," but added that there was nothing about the scene of death suggesting a crime had been committed.

One of the first tweets reporting that the dead student at the dorm was Tinsley was offered up by Adam Carter, news reporter and anchor for WCCO Radio: More detail came courtesy of Star Tribune blogger Nadine Babu:A couple hours after the initial reports, Fox 9 confirmed Tinsley's death. From producer Seth Kaplan:

I took courses with Gary Tinsley, Was one of the most talented, smart, educated, respected student in those "Few" Classes. N Is really sad to see him go so soon. N bringing up his past is just the stupidest thing ever.  Rest in Peace GT And wishing the best for his family, friends, and the entire Gopher team.

I went to Skool wit Gary since the 5th grade. He was the greatest friend u cud ever ask for. He made u laugh wen u were dwn. He was very nice. He was never negative but very smart. I love him so much. I kno he is in a better place now but this is so painful to deal with. I just left his home an hr ago so much sadness. So for the ones who bringing up his past can go mess up someone else's rep. Him in the past with the law is not relevant to his death.

Met him a few years ago when he first came to the U for the summer Bridge program.  Very social guy, kind, respectful, and had a great future.  Ashame to see him go so young.

Attn everybody! Kirk the conservative Jerk is just that. It's his job to troll and CREATE tension amongst any and everybody who ever knew or met GT. Please disregard all posts by "Kirk", older or new

Always sad to see a young life lost, and even sadder to see trolls use tragedy as an occasion for spewing negative trash at each other.  Show some respect, for one hour of one day in your life.

This so sad!!!! Tragic.  His past shouldn't matter, everybody makes mistakes especially while they're young.  I knew him when he was a freshman, and I remember him as a nice respectful person. May he rest in peace.

A Black athlete dies and you pull out his criminal record?! Your sad, Rupar.

Was adding his criminal past really necessary? That's not really a respectable thing to include when talking about a person's death.

That's tragic that such a talented kid could be so troubled. There were multiple signs that pointed towards something like this potentially happening.Where are the mentors when they're needed?Doesn't the coach get paid enough to pay closer attention to his players?

It must be fun being able to make these types of comments behind your computer screen.

I don't remember seeing anything on who he had became as a person.  Sorry that the media only focuses on the negative.I do know he was a great athlete.  I will be interested in seeing the coroners report; perhaps that will clarify why someone so strong would die so young.

Yes and No to your comment... Yes is because the coaches should know whats going on around the team and take action to anything that look out of order however you have to understand something being a Division 1 head football coach or a coach in general is big, as in its a lot of work. No is because coaches have other big responsibilities to take on the team also. It's a different ball game at that level.

Kirk, just because you've just read stuff about him doesn't give you the right to form a negative assumption about his life.  You don't know the circumstances around his death nor how he's lived his life.  Why must you feel the need to find people to blame for his death?  Just have some empathy for his family and wish him RIP.  I guess you picked your screen name for a reason.

its people like you that are ruining this country, you assumed that his death had something to do with his troubled past, hence your first post you moron.  and yet you keep commenting on other peoples assumptions like "what did it have to do with." thats the point nobody knows yet and might never know so stop assuming and stop playing the devils advocate once people put you in your place.  you clearly have never had youre butt kicked, long overdue in my opinion

This could be more than just a coach looking out. People die from anything. It could most definitely be a health condition. And how dare you say that this was the outlook of his life. Mentors have NOTHING to do with this.

Talk about things that you know nothing about. You didnt personally know him or the person he was. Gary was a great person lit up the room every where he went. Everyone goes threw stages and bad times in there life some are just made public due there position in life. If you knew gary or even kept up with him then you wouldve known that gary left the negativity behind to focus on a more positive life.

Why does it matter if he was a "troubled kid" or previously had run ins with the law? If this was the case, where is the mentor for every politician that preaches to the choir and then drives drunk and gets pulled over? His death had nothing to do with his troubled past. Everyone has their demons but if you ever had the chance to meet him you would know he had a great spirit.

The coaches should be on the lookout for a heart defect in their student athletes? Your comment makes zero sense Kirk...

Tinsley was in trouble 2 years ago. That was in the past and he became a leader and mentor to the team.

"His death had nothing to do with his troubled past."What did it have to do with?you clearly must know...

Besides, I never said he wasn't a great person.  I'm sure he was.

Just because they said his heart stopped doesn't mean his death is related to a heart defect.  This is a trick that newspapers / media outlets use when they don't know the information "his heart stopped".  Well, of course it did, he died and this is what happens.
