Hennepin County removes UN flag from Government Center plaza [VIDEO]

Categories: Minneapolis
UN_Flag.gif
The UN flag flew over the Government Center plaza from 1986 until last week.
After more than 25 years flying alongside the US flag, the UN flag has been removed from the Hennepin County Government Center plaza.

Last week, Hennepin County commissioners approved an "emergency" resolution directing staff to take the flag down. The US, Minnesota, and Hennepin County flags remain.

Wrote commissioner Jeff Johnson in a blog post: "We owe no allegiance to the United Nations and its flag does not belong on the plaza and certainly not flying next to Old Glory."

The presence of the UN flag at the Government Center spurred the creation of an anti-flag Facebook group. In 2009, the True Patriots Network produced a conspiratorial video about the flag, which is embedded below.

Conservative radio hosts Bob Davis and Tom Emmer recently brought the issue back to public consciousness via a discussion on their show. Johnson wrote that Davis and Emmer "forced a discussion" of the issue, but added that he and other commissioners had been talking about removing the UN flag for some time.

And last week, the flag finally came down. While it might seem like a trivial thing to some, it isn't trivial to those who have fought for the US under the stars and stripes, as Johnson points out. Presumably, it also isn't trivial to folks who support internationalism.

If you're interested, here's the True Patriots Network's hard-rockin' anti-UN flag video:

From the mouth of Timothy Wirth, President of the UN Foundation and member of the Club of Rome.;“Isn’t the only hope for the planet that the industrialized civilizations collapse? Isn’t it our responsibility to bring that about?”

Oh ya, Al Gore is a member of the Club of Rome

Paul Watson, Co-founder of Greenpeace said;“It doesn’t matter what is true, it only matters what people believe is true.”

The U.N. has this plan called "Agenda 21"Adgenda 21's  policies are woven into all the General Plans of the cities and counties,  it's important for people to know where these policies are coming from.  While many people support the United Nations for its peacemaking efforts, few know that they have very specific land use policies that they expect to see implemented in every city, county, state and nation.  The specific plan is called United Nations Agenda 21 Sustainable development, which has its basis in Communitarianism.  By now, most Americans have heard of sustainable development but are largely unaware of Agenda 21.(Ya, your just plain ignorant)

U.N. Agenda 21 cites the affluence of Americans as being a major problem which needs to be corrected.  It calls for lowering the standard of living for Americans so that the people in poorer countries will have more, a redistribution of wealth.  Although people around the world aspire to achieve the levels of prosperity we have in our country, and will risk their lives to get here, Americans are cast in a very negative light and need to be taken down to a condition closer to average in the world.  Only then, they say, will there be social justice which is a cornerstone of the U.N. Agenda 21 plan.

Agenda 21 policies date back to the 1970's but it got its real start in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro when President Bush signed onto it.  President Clinton signed it later and continued the program in the United States. Agenda 21 is 'soft-law' and did not have to be voted on by the Congress.  A non-governmental organization called the International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives,  ICLEI, is tasked with carrying out the goals of Agenda 21.  Over 600 cities in the U.S. are members, and that number is growing.  The costs are paid by U.S. taxpayers.

It's time to stand up for OUR rights! We are a sovereign nation!

Ronald Reagan vigorously supported the UN.  Minnesota's youngest Governor and a Republican helped create the UN.   People who are against the flying of the UN Flag are pathetic, including Tom Emmer.

haha that video is so pointless.  What a waste of time all of this is! Someone really needs to refocus their real priorities and actually accomplish something worth being proud of. (mr. johnson)

Are there any Korean War vets reading this?  Guess what--they fought under the banner of the U.N.  This sounds like a reason for someone to try and get their name in the press and generate some positive buzz in certain political circles.  Manufactured controversy.....

"The issue?"  What issue?  Sounds like a few people making silly assumptions about what it means to fly a flag.

Why should they have been allowed to fly the U.N. Flag?It was offensive to some.Remember that guy from West St Paul?He had to remove a Confederate flag from the back deck of his house because of criticism. This flag was on public property...

So a man who came within a whisper of being Governor of Minnesota thinks this is a big deal, a thing needing to be done?  For the Love of God.  I suppose these nativists will keep pushing their agenda as America's economy and place in the world declines, getting louder and nastier and more belligerent.  Militant ignorance is their chief attribute.  The UN certainly has its faults, but it's arguable that the UN is the greatest thing the US has done for the rest of the world.  So of course the angry, self-pitying blowhards hate it.  And this seems to be their hour.

That quote is actually attributed to Maurice Strong, however, I have found no websites that actually have transcript of the speech.  I did find a similar quote on WikiQuotes:

"If we don't change, our species will not survive... Frankly, we may get to the point where the only way of saving the world will be for industrial civilization to collapse."

Similar, but much, much different in meaning, provided it's accurate.

This quote was supposed to have been in the National Review in 1997, although the 1997 article it was supposed to have appeared in is a broken link on the National Review's website (spooky!).

Ironically, Phil Kerpin, a National Review columnist mentions this quote in a 3/28/08 article, but puts the date at 1992 and has not citation.

What's a skeptic got to do to get some cited sources around here?

Kirk, I'll pay you $100.00 cash if you can prove the following statements using the Agenda 21 document posted on the UN's website.  Dead serious.  Post the answers below citing the section/chapter/page and I will send you $100.00.  You don't even need to give me your real name/address--I'll send it to a P.O. box or friend.

1.  "...which has its basis in Communitarianism."2. "U.N. Agenda 21 cites the affluence of Americans as being a major problem which needs to be corrected."3.  "...It calls for lowering the standard of living for Americans..."4.  "Over 600 cities in the U.S. are members..."

An excellent point, and I bet Tom Emmer doesn't even know or understand this point.  He's a failed person and a political hack.

Here is a good one for ya."Shifting allocations within existing education budgets in favour of primary education, with focus on environment and development;"  (Agenda 21, Section 36.7)

Read the following subsection 36.10 and you will find-(b) Shifting allocations within existing education budgets in favour of primary education, with focus on environment and development;(c) Promoting conditions where a larger share of the cost is borne by local communities, with rich communities assisting poorer ones;(d) Obtaining additional funds from private donors concentrating on the poorest countries, and those with rates of literacy below 40 per cent;(e) Encouraging debt for education swaps:(f) Lifting restrictions on private schooling and increasing the flow of funds from and to non-governmental organizations, including small-scale grass-roots organizations;(g) Promoting the effective use of existing facilities, for example, multiple school shifts, fuller development of open universities and other long-distance teaching:(h) Facilitating low-cost or no-cost use of mass media for the purposes of education;(i) Encouraging twinning of universities in developed and developing countries.

Is this because we Americans do so well in the areas of Reading, Math and Science? So now we should focus on the environment?Where is the Teachers Unions on this?  School shifts?  Encouraging Debt?  Lifting restrictions on private schooling? And they were against the federal program of "no child left behind".Just wait until the global government gets involved in how they are to educate the children. That will fix our education system right?

You know it's not that I think the U.N. is all bad.  Their peace keeping efforts are for the better, but programs like this scare the hell out of me.  And I think it's nothing more than a grab for power and money.

Furthermore I appreciate your interest in this.  You are now more educated on Agenda 21 than 99.9% of America.  Just wait until you get to the part where they intend to make 20% of American public lands off limits to humans. Ya I said off limits.  And even more bizarre is where Agenda 21 intends to confiscate private lands through "martial law" to create "buffer zones"

See, when you put a frog in boiling water, it will jump to safety.  Place it in a pot of cold water and turn on the heat, the frog will slowly cook.  These laws are designed as "slow creep" to fool us frogs.

You want some real dirt from the U.N's own General Assembly documents?

Google: "S/19-2. Programme for the Further Implementation of Agenda 21"

Agenda 21's ideal outcome is the reduction of the world’s population by 80 to 90 percent.

Evil man, pure evil....

If you would like to talk to one of their own in the United States -Dr. Costis Toregas1301 Pennsylvania Ave., NWWashington DC 20004, USATel: +1-202/626–2400; Fax: +1-202/262–2498

Pretend to be an admirer of their goals.  Ask questions like: "what can we do to manipulate the minds of the American Population"?or"how do we infiltrate local governments to institute our beliefs"?

Ask down right nefarious questions.  You will be surprised what you get when they think they are talking to a friendly ear.

Oh, have you ever heard of the "International Baccalaureate" (IB) program?Yes, it is also part of "Agenda 21".  The youth need to be indoctrinated. There is a dozen + schools and districts right here in the Twin Cities that pride themselves on their involvement in the "International Baccalaureate" program.  Why you may ask, perhaps it sounds cool...

First off, you can keep you money.  The only payment I would accept is you educating yourself on "Agenda 21"Agenda 21 is a 300-page, 40-chapter, “soft-law” policy document.Secondly they don't use the exact word "Communitarianism"They use words and phrases like "community vision", "strategic goals of the community", "community-based", "perceptions of a community", "community-wide review"Much of the terms and phrases I used are interpretations.  Much like Obama when he says, "republicans want dirty air and dirty water"  They NEVER actually say anything like that.

You will find this language used in such resources as 1. democratsagainstunagenda212. postsustainabilityinstitute

Just google it!  "Agenda 21 pdf"  "Local Agenda 21"Get you hands on THEIR own literature.  Here is a basic layout of the original Agenda 21 literatureChapter 1: Preamble to Agenda 21Chapter 2: International CooperationChapter 3: Combating PovertyChapter 4: Changing Consumption PatternsChapter 5: Population and SustainabilityChapter 6: Protecting and Promoting Human HealthChapter 7: Sustainable Human SettlementsChapter 8: Making Decisions for Sustainable DevelopmentChapter 9: Protecting the AtmosphereChapter 10: Managing Land SustainablyChapter 11: Combating DeforestationChapter 12: Combating Desertification and DroughtChapter 13: Sustainable Mountain Development Chapter 14: Sustainable Agriculture and Rural DevelopmentChapter 15: Conservation of Biological DiversityChapter 16: Management of BiotechnologyChapter 17: Protecting and Managing the OceansChapter 18: Protecting and Managing Fresh WaterChapter 19: Safer Use of Toxic ChemicalsChapter 20: Managing Hazardous WastesChapter 21: Managing Solid Wastes and SewageChapter 22: Managing Radioactive WastesChapter 23: Preamble to Strengthening the Role of Major GroupsChapter 24: Women in Sustainable DevelopmentChapter 26: Strengthening the Role of Indigenous PeopleChapter 26: Strengthening the Role of Indigenous PeopleChapter 27: Partnerships with NGOsChapter 28: Local AuthoritiesChapter 29: Workers and Trade UnionsChapter 30: Business and IndustryChapter 31: Scientists and TechnologistsChapter 32: Strengthening the Role of FarmersChapter 33: Financing Sustainable DevelopmentChapter 34: Technology TransferChapter 35: Science for Sustainable DevelopmentChapter 36: Education, Training and Public AwarenessChapter 37: Creating Capacity for Sustainable DevelopmentChapter 38: Organizing for Sustainable DevelopmentChapter 39: International LawChapter 40: Information for Decision-Making

I would love to see the proof that over 50% of all third world countries hate the U.N.  Heck, I'll even settle for proof that 25% of the third world countries hate the U.N.

exactly! One was on private property, one was on public. There is no comparison; but apparently the public thought they could interject in the the private life and property of that guy.So easily one could say, public property IS the responsibility of the public and should reflect the beliefs of the public.

Kirk, I did Google this, but found nothing.  Then I Google'd it and added "80" and "90."  At first, I was shocked that there seemed to be a lot of summaries that mentioned Agenda 21 and a reduction of 80% to 90%.

But then I started digging and looked for where that number came from.  One person mentioned that the UN wanted to keep the population at 500,000,000.  Shocking, again.

But then I kept digging to see where that number came from, which I found.  The number that all this excitement is based on is from the Georgia Guidestones, the so-called American Stonehenge.  It was built in the 70s.  There was no government involvement.

The far right has gotten themselves whipped into a frenzy based on the inscriptions on some granite slabs in Georgia.  All it took to uncover this is five minutes and some skepticism.

I don't know, Kirk.  I Google'd "Costis Toregas" and the word "manipulate" and then the word "infiltrate."  In the modern age, I would expect to see some sort of comment attributed to him that would support your assertion.  However, I found none.  I'm very, very happy to keep checking out your suggestions--I try to be open-minded.  Right now, though, I'm struggling to keep the faith because you're not giving me any sort of primary source material.  Without that, we're left with half-truths and assumptions, neither of which are strong enough to support your assertions.

Thanks for the ideas to Google.  I did check them out and found it pretty interesting reading.  The trouble I'm having is the lack of actual cited sources.  There's a lot of conjecture and dots being connected, but that doesn't equal truth.

I would be much more inclined to investigate this further if the anti-Agenda 21 people openly explored other explanations for their observations beyond a vast government conspiracy.  It makes it seem like they've come to their conclusions and now they're just collecting information to back it up.

Could you narrow that down to a specific program?  You're asking me review over 100,000 hours of BBC archives to verify that statement and that's if I start AFTER 1999.  I appreciate your spirit and passion (I truly do)--I just need actual cited facts to consider your points.  I can't take you on your word alone.

The guy removed the flag in WSP because the owner of his pizza franchise had a frank conversation about it with him.  Purely commercial decision.

The beliefs of the public are varied.  Not everyone fits a mold of 'liberal or conservative' and  I fail to see how the UN is a conservative boogeyman.   What have they done to warrant such mistrust? The United Nations is the only avenue for some developing third-world countries to have any say in international affairs.  They rely on it for their sole international representation.  We were instrumental to it's founding and as member state so why not fly the flag?
