Rep. Mary Franson infuriated by Earth Day, calls it "Pagan holiday" [UPDATE]

Mary Franson.JPG
Franson apparently wants students to "worship" "God's Nature" instead.
The American Federation of Teachers recently put together a website that gives teachers guidance about how to commemorate Earth Day by integrating "green acts" into lesson plans.

Seems pretty innocuous, right? After all, who would take objection to students learning about how toxic fumes affect the development of seedlings?

Rep. Mary Franson, that's who. Yesterday, the first-term Republican from Alexandria -- she of 'food stamp recipients are like wild animals' fame --  took to Twitter to express outrage about the "celebration of a Pagan holiday, worship of Nature and not God's Nature."

Franson was responding to a tweet from conservative activist Sheila Kihne, who characterized the teachers' federation website as "indoctrination."

Check out the tweets for yourself: Celebration of God's Nature? Does Franson not realize we have a separation of church and state in this country?

:: UPDATE ::

As you might expect, since news of her tweet circulated this morning, the Twittersphere has been abuzz with folks criticizing and supporting Franson's perspective on Earth Day. But instead of backtracking, Franson has doubled-down on her give-thanks-to-God-not-earth view. She offered up the following in response to a supporter: Later in the day, she tweeted: "Big deal. So I don't like Earth Day."

I wonder what these narrow minded people would say if they knew "christian" holidays placed where they are to coicide with similar Pagen days of worship and since when is taking care of what god "which ever one you pray to" gave use to live in and love a bad thing. Its not Pagen Cristian Muslium Shinto Buddist or anything else but good sense for us our childeren and grandchildren to do what we can to care for this planet.

She's not necessarily dumb.  She's absolutely ignorant.  And she's been co-opted by a very sophisticate corporate initiative.  There is a very well-coordinated PR effort in action to convince people that anyone interested in protecting the environment is part of an anti-American conspiracy.  More than that; that anyone telling you that you can't do whatever you think you want to do without consequences, is trying to control you.  It's a pitch to the toddler inside us all.  The pitch doesn't hold up to any analysis; any more than McDonald's commercials stand up to scrutiny.  But it's appealing to people who want to do what they want to do, without any consequences.

This is the same effort that poses cigarette addiction as a choice, global warming as a hoax, high-fructose corn syrup as the same as sugar, trans-fats as necessary, renewable energy as unreliable and expensive (never mind the enormous subsidies given to dirty energy), anti-bullying efforts as gay indoctrination; on and on and on.

Too bad there are so many overgrown toddlers and so few self-aware and self-responsible adults among us.  And it's too bad the toddlers have so many elected representatives indulging their shallow, short-term wants.  When they realize their choices have made it impossible for them to meet their actual needs, they're going to be upset.  And then the corporate spin-masters will prop up another straw man for them to blame for any and all unpleasant realities.

Just when you thought you've heard everything......I, in all my life have never met a Christian that made a differentiation between "nature" and "God's nature" I don't even know what the heck she is talking about. She is certainly giving Christianity a bad name - It makes me wonder if she's not an Al-Qaeda plant....She and MB could do a female version of the movie Dumb and Dumber.

She represents the large majority of her constituents very well. She's my state rep and if you think a theocracy ruled by religion is a great idea, you might want to join the Franson for Governor committee ( I am not authorized to make announcements or accept contributions on behalf of any candidate.

This is like something from THE ONION!  What kind of statement is, "celebration of a Pagan holiday, worship of Nature and not God's Nature."  ???  All nature IS God's nature.

Rolling my eyes. Seriously Mary Franson? THIS is what you are upset about? If you don't want to celebrate it don't celebrate it. It is for the childrens' parents to make the decisions not to celebrate it-NOT OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS. Hanukkah is recognized, but I don't celebrate it. That does not mean that I am going to take it away from the families that do. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and frankly, I don't want you or anyone else meddling in my affairs like this. Let the people decide if they like it or not, but don't ruin it for those of us who are open to all kinds of learning.GET OVER YOURSELF AND FIND SOMETHING MORE WORTHWHILE TO FIGHT.

How is it that religion has ANY authority of conviction without any proof of the claim that a god exists? Belief is one thing. Action on unproven claims is another. Truth?  What "truth"? Don't tell me THAT your god created everything.  Tell me HOW your god created everything...  in DETAIL with EVIDENCE. Superstitious religion has been given authority for political or ethical action within societies based on an unproven claim. Atheists need to stand up and legally challenge religious claims of authority and put these delusional idiots right back where they belong... inside their church where they belong. If you want to believe in a god, then fine.  I have no problem with that. I have a problem with religion when theists try to force their beliefs on everyone else. Enough is enough.

I'm confused.  Isn't Earth Day actually a communist plot?  So now it's a Communo-pagan plot?  The conspiracies are blending together. After all, Earth Day is celebrated on Lenin's birthday! Coincidence ... OR NOT?

Militant ignorance is on the march.  Not just here in Minnesota, but all across the country.  It's not really that surprising.  We're coming to the end of one historical era in the US, and the beginning of another.  The people who fear they'll lose their privileged status, whether or not they've earned it or if it even helped them all that much, are desperate to return society to an era that never existed.  And they're willing to destroy anything or anybody who gets in their way.  If they do get what they want, it won't help, because it's based on self-deception and self-pity in the first place.  But they'll then have a new round of scapegoats to blame and more fears and false perceptions to rationalize.

Conservatives insist that those receiving welfare are lazy and are getting a free ride at the expense of the hard-working citizen. Liberals insist that all citizens have a basic right to life and it is the goverments responsibility to provide for those unable to provide for themselves. What are we really saying? Welfare is based upon the norm set up by puritans long ago. A man is defined as a white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant, healthy, ambitious, earnest, and honest, a man whom the Lord smiles upon by increasing the fruits of his labor. Welfare is designed to compensate people insofar as they deviate from that norm. Insofar as a woman has an illegitimate child, she recieves compensation. Insofar as a man is disables, he recieves compensation. Insofar as a person is too old to work, he recieves compensation.Welfare buys that portion of a person which does not match the stereotype of a real man. Welfare payments are never sufficient, never adequate. This is because each person bears some relation to the norm and in proportion to their resemblance, they receive less. The Republicans represent the best of the white economics. The Democrats represent all of the deviations. The republican party has ostensibly stood for less government as a political philosophical position. But when you listen carefully to the Republicans you do not really hear less government, you hear a strange religion of early puritan mythology. The Republican Party is in reality the truest expression of America's religion of progress and white respectability. It stands for the white superman that never existed. The measure of America's willingness to examine the basis of its existance is to be counted in the number of registered voters who claim to be Republicans. ***The measure of truth in the above assertation is the Republicans willingness to lose elections rather than depart from cherished doctrines and myths. Only a religion can attract and hold such loyalty. -v. deloriaLike ·

So someone celebrating a non-Christian 'holiday' is outrageous to conservatives.

Yeah, conservatives are all about "religious liberty".

And, for extra stupidity, if someone fails to celebrate a holiday in the conservative-approved manner, they are part of a "War On Christmas".

Being a non-Christian is 'obviously' (to conservatives) an attack on Christianity.

Objecting to the very existence of other religions is, in some puzzling way, striking a blow for religious freedom.

It's not as if conservatives would ever go as far as proposing a national moratorium on the construction of mosques. Oh yeah... they did.

Yeah, it's all about liberty, removing regulations, and small government for conservatives.

As a Christian, I believe that celebrating the Earth is honoring God's creation!  I cannot believe that she doesn't get that.  I'm beginning to think she needs to just cut back on the caffeine and disappear.  As the old saying goes:  "Better to be silent and have the world think you a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

I'd be curious to hear the "Christian" defence of not trying to keep our planet a clean and livable place for ourselves and future generations.  As a Christian, I find it amazing that people are outraged at the concept of pickup our litter, cleaning up our water, and keeping pollutants out of our air.  How is any of this incompatible with the teachings of not just Christianity, but nearly every major world religion that values the planet upon which we inhabit.  Anyone?

Josearpaio
Josearpaio

The problem is that GOP membership requires that you talk out of both sides of your mouth.  You must appear to be a good Christian while at the same time squeezing every dollar you can out of the earth's natural resource, which means polluting since it is too expensive to keep the water and air clean.  When it comes down to making a decision about what is most important, $$ wins every time.

To sit in judgment of those things which you perceive to be wrong or imperfect is to be one more person who is part of judgment, evil or imperfection.

Franson should probably choose her words more carefully.  Maybe not tweet when she's "infuriated."  Christians traditionally believe in worshiping God, not the things he has created.  So whether you worship nature or, as she says, "God's nature" is immaterial.  Either way you're worshiping the creation instead of the creator.

green23
green23

Graheme wrote:"Either way you're worshiping the creation instead of the creator."

Either way, people should be able to worship however they want without having to justify themselves to Franson.

Why do so many evangelicals react with horror and outrage when they encounter non-Christian beliefs? The implied message is that these beliefs need to be stamped out.

There seems to be a continuous theme from the evangelical Right that non-Christians should be required to keep quiet about their beliefs and worship in secret. And this seems to be seen as some kind of grand, tolerant compromise on the part of Christians, who are perpetually portraying themselves as a persecuted minority.

Aside from that, teaching kids that toxic fumes kill seedlings is not "worship".

Ginsbergesque

there is nothing worshipful about earth day.  it's a day to educate people on ways to keep the earth from becoming destroyed.  Plus, being a good steward of God's great gift of the earth means taking care of it.  Adam and Eve were to tend the garden.  This isn't rocket science and there should be no debate.  people need to be educated about EARTH SCIENCE which is how humans understand the mechanics of what they can do to preserve God's good earth.  And if you don't believe in God then it is just about the science of keeping the earth alive so humans can stay alive.  Earth day is celebrating a gift and learning to conserve it, not worshipping.  As a Minnesotan removed by home I am dissapointed in the boneheads who have been elected and who delight in making us all look like ignorant idiots.

Worshipping Earth is pagan and sinful. But worshipping saints and objects like the Cross? That's perfectly fine. I guess idol worship is perfectly fine as long as you're worshipping the right ones.
