Rochelle Inselman "obsessed" over Bret Struck
Rochelle Inselman hacked into her ex-boyfriend's Facebook, emailed defamatory messages to his friends and family, and stole his identity to apply for credit cards.

Eventually, Inselman shot her former lover to death, according to a criminal complaint filed yesterday by Hennepin County prosecutors.

Inselman and Bret Struck ended their relationship in 2004. Their breakup left Inselman "obsessed" with Struck even eight years after the end of their involvement. She bought a 9mm handgun and told the man who sold it to her that she needed the weapon "because of an ex-boyfriend."

Two days before Valentine's Day, Inselman shot Struck in his Brooklyn Center apartment, according to the police.

Struck, who would've turned 42* last March, failed to show up for work on February 13. A concerned colleague went to his house to search for him.

The co-worker opened an unlocked side door and saw Struck lying on the kitchen floor.

Cops discovered silver and brass bullet casings in Struck's home, where he lived alone. Neighbors said they heard "a succession of bangs" the previous evening, February 12. An autopsy showed that he was shot multiple times.

After interviewing friends and family of Struck's, police learned that Inselman had "a history of exhibiting threatening and harassing behavior" toward Struck, which included hacking into his Facebook and trashing him to his loved ones.

Police officers visited Inselman in her Eden Valley home on February 16. She denied being in the Twin Cities "any time after November 2011" and said she "rarely leaves her house."

Inselman claimed she was on her computer at the time of the murder and hadn't seen Struck in several years. The cops discovered that she had been in Struck's neighborhood "four times in the week preceding the murder." A forensic exam of her computer also revealed "an absence of activity over a four-hour time period that included when [Struck] was killed."

Last week, cops met the man who allegedly sold Inselman the handgun. Investigators traced the shells found at the murder scene to the gun sold to Inselman, which was recovered in a Clearwater trash can.

Inselman is being held on second-degree murder charges.

*Correction: Bret Struck would've turned 42 this month, not 32. I regret the error.

All you people are fuckin stupid if you thought she did it. she is my mom and i know for a fact it takes more than 4 hours from her to get to brooklyn park and i know she was on the computer

He probably wouldn't have left her if she put down the burgers and shakes from time to time and got some exercise.

Seth, sadly you need to grow up and face the facts.  You DO NOT know for a fact that it takes more than 4 hours to get from Eden Valley to Brooklyn Center and back, because it only takes 3 hours.  Your mother had plenty of time to drive there, murder Bret and drive home.  Don't believe me?   Try mapquest.Next fact.  She wasn't on the computer, either.  Police already know that her computer was inactive for over 4 hours...which corresponds to the time when Bret's neighbors heard the sound of the gun shots.Your mother bought a gun from a man and then discarded the box in a public area. The box not only identified the seller, but contained a test fired bullet, which matched the bullets used to shoot Bret.  That seller knew your mother's name, and he positively identified her as the buyer.

Those are the facts.   I'm sorry that you became another victim, but you need to direct your anger at the person who not only murdered an innocent man, but ruined her own life, while showing no consideration for you, whatsoever. All murderers have families.  Many have their own children.  Andre is right - cold blooded murder is the lowest of selfish acts, done without thought or concern for anyone else.  She harmed everyone who loved Bret, and she harmed you, too.   It's ok to love her because she's your mother, but don't be a fool who stands beside the guilty and falls for their lies, in spite of overwhelming truth.

Just Stop...this isn't a joke..A wonderful man lost his life. The truth will come out and Bret will have justice and the monster will be caged.

Andre - Seth really is her son. This is a tragic situation all around, and it would be nice if people remembered that everyone on both sides of this equation had/have loved ones. I really urge people to think twice before posting negative comments - about either the victim or the defendant.

I'm not going to keep going around and around with you on this. Your sympathies obviously lie somewhere other than mine. You can call for civility and understanding but remember that if not for the deranged act of this psychopath there would not be grieving and hurting familes and friends on either side of the equation. Justice be done!

I understand your thoughts regarding Seth's comments, Andre - if you keep in mind that he's all of 16, that might make more sense.  He's clearly a hurting teenager.

I am extremely sad for all the families involved, and I am sorry for the loss of your friend. Andre.Let's just all keep it civil, please, and remember that neither the victim nor the defendant can read anything that we are writing, here - it's only the hurting and grieving families and friends.

Well Em, perhaps if Seth hadn't called people "fu**n stupid and said he didn't "fu**n care I could be more understanding. I can understand how heartbreaking it must be for him, but the police didn't make this case up out of whole cloth. Murder is the most selfish act a human being can commit. In this case it was a heinous and premeditated act which was preceded by acts of identity theft, stalking and harassment. It's not unreasonable for even a casual observer to consider this monstrous. Justice must be done. If the complaint is true, the perpetrator allowed their obsession to fester for eight years. How can the victim's family ever feel safe again unless this person is imprisoned for life?  They should never have to fear this person again. It also sickens me when people (on this posting and others) accuse the victim of violating someone else, when he's been murdered and can no longer answer those spurious and unsubstantiated claims for himself.  I think it's beyond the pale to expect anyone who knew Bret to show tolerance for this evil. Let the truth and facts come out. Let justice be served and we will all have to live with that.

Don't care about the fact that someone was killed in cold blood in their home? Don't care about justice for his grieving family? How sad and sick you are.

I'd like to at least see mention of the fact that the victim of this crime had allegedly sexually assaulted the accused after their break-up

Andre
Andre

What is that crap?? Mention of the "fact"? What fact?  This is a completely spurious and baseless attack upon the victim by an associate or associates of the animal that assassinated him. The delusions of a stalker/identity thief/family harassing/cold blooded murderer are not "fact" I'll guess that because you don't even have the guts to put a first name on your post that you know this monstrous killer. Take a moment to think about all of her actions. Then think about the family that lost a son and a brother and all the people who lost their dear friend. It's sick and irresponsible to accuse the VICTIM in this crime of such an act with no documentation or proof. Stop spreading lies and pain to people who have already suffered the ultimate loss. Face your own denial about how truly sick and evil the thing that took Bret's life is and STFU!!!

The StarTribune lists Stuck's age as 42, not 32.

The article is wrong Bret would have turned 42 last March. It does seem to me that there was clear premeditation and malice aforethought in this case. The part that she was in his neighborhood 4 times before she murdered him seems to suggest that she was trying to steel her resolve before committing the act. I hope they get the full forty years without possibility of parole Bret's family should never have to worry that she'll be on the streets again.

I'm not even trying to be a vindictive "throw the book at her" kind of guy here, but how on earth does this not qualify as first degree murder?

In the state of minnesota the police cannot charge first degree murder. it has to go to a grand jury and they up the charge to first degree murder.

Probably because intent comes into play. It will be easier to convict, or make a plea deal, on 2nd degree.

It seems pretty clear to me that she intended to kill him.  Bought a gun, told seller it was because of an ex-boyfriend, does multiple drive-by's prior to the murder, and then goes back and kills him.   Police have stated that it does not appear that Bret initiated any contact with her, so she wasn't threatened by him - she was a threat to him. What's really scary is that she carried this rage for 8 years.  Poor Bret - one of the nicest guys in the world.  How he got hooked up with a psychopath like her I'll never know.
