Skin cancer rates for young women eight-times higher than in 1970, Mayo study finds

A new Mayo study finds that skin cancer rates in Olmsted County have risen dramatically in the last 40 years.
A new Mayo Clinic study found a dramatic rise in skin cancer rates among young people, with a particularly sharp increase for young women.

The study, which looked at melanoma rates for 18- to 39-year-olds in 85-percent-white Olmsted County, found that from 1970 to 2009, the incidence of melanoma increased eight-fold among women and four-fold among men. Minnesota as a whole is also roughly 85 percent white.

Though researchers didn't look at what's behind the rising cancer rates, some suggested the increase is correlated with the use of indoor tanning beds.

According to MPR, Dr. Jerry Brewer, a Mayo dermatologist who led the study, said, "we know for sure that ultra-violet radiation is linked to cancer in a big way, especially tanning bed exposure."

Who said pale skin can't be sexy anyway?

Brewer's observation is supported by a 2010 University of Minnesota study. That study found that people who use any type of tanning device, for any amount of time, are 74 percent more likely to develop skin cancer.

The hypothesis that use of tanning beds correlates with higher melanoma rates -- a hypothesis which, unsurprisingly, the Indoor Tanning Association denies, citing no "direct link" between tanning beds and cancer -- also explains why skin cancer rates have been rising so much faster for young women.

Says the Mayo study: "Young women are more likely than young men to participate in activities that increase risk for melanoma, including voluntary exposure to artificial sunlamps."

Since the study only looked at cancer rates through 2009, it's too early to say how much the Jersey Shore's popularization of "GTL" will contribute to rising melanoma rates for Situation-mimicking males in Rochester and the surrounding region.

I work at a Tanning Salon and see some pretty interesting stuff on a regular basis. I do have a supervisor who has told customers indoor tanning "isn't bad for you" and is the same as laying in the sun.  I'm really hoping the fad-tanning thing isn't a result of a bunch of tanning salon employees telling young girls its healthy.. Also, the tax on tanning is insane. We frequently joke about the prices after tax: "Would you like to buy a $50 tanning credit for the low price of $75?" Although people still pay the markup.

Under Obama's health care bill they imposed a $1.00 tax per tanning session.Has it cut the number of "dangerous" tanning sessions that fair skinned people undergo? With news like this it's only a matter of time before they outlaw the practice all together.  With ObamaCare it's about the welfare of the "collective", and when your personal risk affects the insurance rates of the "collective", it has to be done away with.  Isn't it great to be part of the "collective"?

All you ladies who think tan is beautiful now wait until you get older.  Your skin will look like leather and have tons of wrinkles not to mention CANCER!  Stay away from the tanning beds...Spray tan is always better and to the comment below you can get natural looking spray tans!  That girl in the middle looks goofy... I moved here 5 years ago and I can't believe all the people who tan.  It's just crazy... I care way too much about my skin and life to do that!

Hate to pick nits here, but that girl in the middle of the picture probably hasn't spent as much time in the sun as she has at the spray-on tan store.  She's the same color as a Home Depot apron!
