Unemployed 22-year-old resorts to plastering face on Mpls billboard in hopes of finding job

Olson adopted novel job search tactics.
It seems like Bennett Olson could've found better ways to blow $300, but you can't blame an unemployed guy for pulling out all the stops, we suppose.

Olson, 22, doled out a few hundo to plaster his face on an electronic billboard towering above I-35W near where it intersects with the Midtown Greenway. Visible for eight seconds at a time as it rotated with other ads, Olson's billboard was on display for a total of 24 hours last week.

His short, to-the-point message? "Hire me!" The bottom of the billboard featured the URL to Olson's website, where his resume and contact information can be found.

Olson told KARE 11 that he lost his job at Treasure Island Casino last month and has been hunting for work since. The Rosemount resident sent out resume after resume after resume to no avail, and then started thinking more creatively.

Nobody can blame him for lack of effort.

"I was just trying to think of ideas to set myself apart from other people and to get myself out there and maybe catch the attention of somebody," Olson said, adding that the billboard's goal "was to get attention to then connect with people that could then lead me to a job."

Unfortunately, with the billboard's one-week run in the rear-view mirror, it appears Olson didn't accomplish his goal -- at least not yet. He said that while he has plenty of leads, he hasn't yet received a job offer, though he did receive an e-mail from the vice president of a laser tech company who wants to talk to him.

Olson is still wrapping up his business degree and is getting married this fall -- "it would be nice to have a job before then and get that all settled in," he told KARE. Maybe he would've been better off saving the $300 for graduate school.

Criminy - paying only $300 for a prime location electronic billboard like that is fishy. Does his uncle own it?   Did it run for 1 second?   :-))

Only problem with the billboard, that is probably contributing to his failure would be it doesn't have what his field is. If I were an employer I wouldn't call him, since I have no idea what he is looking for. If he is in marketing, it should say that on the billboard.

I probably would have spent that $300 on a mobile website, since that's what most people would visit upon seeing a billboard. Unless, of course, you're walking around with a laptop or desktop. Instead, the site is a disaster from a mobile browser.

Maybe he should buy advertising for a living. $300 for a week in rotation on a Clear Channel billboard in that location is cheap.

The $300 he spent on the billboard will not go far in graduate school.  Obviously, prices vary, but one graduate class at my (public!) university here in North Carolina costs $1,800.  I do remember a time when $300 would get you almost into the class, but that was long ago.

Well, he's certainly differentiated himself as someone who ostensibly has a business education but will blow $300 on a shallow gimmick.

Got to give him credit for an over the top idea. He may not get any job offers right away, but people are busy and in time I think he will see a positive outcome. Kudos

Sadly, one conservative radio station in the Washington, DC area implies that having a college degree is not worth it, based on the lack of people being hired and the number of student loans.

I never expected it to be this big and a mobile site was something I wanted to do.  That also takes a lot of time.  I update my site to a new theme that adjusts to different screen sizes.  Feel free to check it out!

It says he lost his job last month.  LIkely was engaged while gainfully employed.  What point are you getting at?  It didn't say he was blowing thousands on a lavish wedding.  Maybe a JP wedding?  I am not sure what you are getting at......

To confirm your thinking. Yes I got engaged fully employed. She's more then excited that I'm moving on to something better. Thanks I enjoyed your comment!
