William Jacobs will spend his twilight years behind bars.
The next time William Jacobs is a free man, he could be well into his 80s.

Jacobs, a former Minneapolis Parks Police chief and teacher, was sentenced to 18 years in prison Monday for child molestation and possession of child pornography.

And when he is released, he'll serve another 10 years of probation.

"Mr. Jacobs is now gone," Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said after the sentencing. "Eighteen years, folks, is a long time, and 10 years probation -- he's 68. You can do the math. It's what he deserves. You are responsible for what you do, with some exceptions. Mr. Jacobs doesn't fit those exceptions."

Jacobs was charged in January 2010 with molesting a boy over a period of three years, beginning when the boy was 12. Since the original charges, two dozen victims have come forward with similar stories about Jacobs, though the statute of limitations had run out on most of the accusations.

In addition, police found more than 140,000 images of child pornography on Jacobs's computer.

Jacobs agreed to a plea deal last month, in which he admitted to three counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and three counts of possessing child pornography. In exchange, Jacobs faced between 12 and 18 years in prison, and the judge opted for the maximum sentence.

"We think justice was done," said Freeman. "He used his position--teacher, police officer, and police chief, for heaven's sake."
