Jay Leno pokes fun at Minnesota newspaper during Headlines segment [VIDEO]

Leno thinks using your iPad to play solitaire should not be considered "high-tech."
On Monday night, Jay Leno tried to get some laughs at the expense of the Fergus Falls Daily Journal. But because his joke wasn't that funny, he had to settle for consolation claps instead.

Leno poked fun at the Journal while running down absurd newspaper content from throughout the nation in his Headlines segment.

In a recent story titled "Library goes high-tech," the Journal features a large photo of a youngster named Isaac playing with his iPad. But instead of using the gadget to do some sort of technologically impressive task, Isaac is depicted in the shot resting his head on his hand while playing solitaire.

"Look at Isaac putting the iPad to good use -- look, he's playing solitaire!" Leno quipped, eliciting a set of tepid laughs from the studio audience.

We guess there's some merit in being direct with your punchlines, but this joke probably could've used a bit more fleshing out.

In any event, Monday wasn't the first time the Fergus Falls Daily Journal had the "honor" of making it into Leno's Headlines. In September 2009, Leno mocked the Journal's "Here's Summer" cover photo featuring guys in winter coats in a boat.

A summer issue featuring dudes in winter coats in boats? Now that sounds like it has some real comedic potential.

Anyway, here's video of Monday night's Headlines segment. For the Fergus Falls bit, fast forward to about 1:50:

Leno was truly funny in the old days. Now he's truly embarrassing.

Are you not aware that someone in the Fergus Falls area (likely, unless the reader subscribes from somewhere else) had to find the news value of that photo questionable in order to send that to The Tonight Show? I would agree with that local Fergus Falls reader. They couldn't get a better photo than a kid playing solitaire? How about a child of the same age doing some real research for school? Or, no photo at all? Aren't tax dollars supporting those library services and paying for those iPads (which are valuable in many ways), and the most responsible photo the local paper could get is of a child playing computerized solitaire? I'd rather see a photo of kids playing real card games with actual playing cards. You critique other Twin Cities media, City Pages, but somehow the Fergus Falls Daily Journal is above any reproach?

It’s: “Tamagotchi meets Pokemon” but with realfusion between the two and for smart-phones. People were crazy aboutTamagotchis. It gave the user a sense of pride. You created and developedsomething and then measured your success by seeing how it fared against theelements. It gave the user a unique feeling of power. My creation survived.

You aren't seriously being outraged by this article are you?

For the record, I'm not defending Leno. I'm defending the Leno viewer from greater Fergus Falls who questioned their local paper's news judgment enough to send the clip to California. I am not a Leno fan; I'd much rather watch Fallon, Letterman, Ferguson, Kimmel, Stewart, Colbert, etc.

I am a professional working journalist for other media who has greatly enjoyed other past investigative reporting by City Pages staff, and I'm thinking their employees today could have better, more valuable work to do either for print, the Facebook page or elsewhere online than to pick on Leno or that local Fergus Falls reader for finding the Daily Journal's decision to publish that photo absurd like I do.
