Prairie Island nuclear security supervisor pulls Homer Simpson, gets busted faking drug test

If this story is indicative, it's pretty easy to get a job at the Prairie Island nuclear plant.
In a move worthy of Homer Simpson, a security supervisor at Xcel Energy's Prairie Island nuclear power plant was fired after he was caught faking a drug test urine sample.

Homer certainly would've tested positive for Duff, but the Prairie Island worker was probably trying to hide the fact he had been indulging in something illegal.

The drug test revelation comes just three months after feds announced they've found a "security-related problem" at the nuclear plant that requires additional inspections.

At the time, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission refused to go into detail about the security problem. It's unclear whether they knew then that one security-related issue at Prairie Island is that a guy dumb enough to try and make a cold cup of mystery liquid pass for a real urine sample could get hired there in the first place.

Homer might fit in pretty well at Prairie Island.

Just weeks after the NRC's revelation, Xcel Energy declared that an "unusual" coolant issue occurred in one of the plant's reactors, compounding bad PR with more bad PR.

The NRC released a report yesterday that wraps up the feds' investigation of Urinegate. The report says the worker was busted when a test technician noticed the liquid in his sample cup didn't feel warm. That incident occurred during a surprise test on July 23, 2010, and the worker was fired after he failed to report for a second test.

The NRC determined that Prairie Island's staff took appropriate action. We're not sure why anybody thought an investigation into the sample-faking dude's firing was necessary in the first place.

In any event, the news out of Minnesota's most controversial nuclear facility has been anything but reassuring in recent months.

At least one of the companies that sells clean urine online also sells heater packs to bring it up to body temperature. Plan ahead, guys!

Two years ago isn't "recent months" and they did fire the guy.
