UMD student demands gender-neutral bathrooms, goes on hunger strike, school caves

Moses is the Minnesota's most prominent gender-neutral bathroom activist.
You'd probably have a hard time finding anybody in the world more passionate about gender-neutral bathrooms than UMD student Blair Moses.

Last month, Moses sent a letter to UMD administration demanding that the school install more gender-neutral bathrooms on campus. And he wasn't messing around -- if administration didn't acquiesce to his request, he threatened to go on a huger strike as of April 26.

Moses, a Black Panther supporter who says he doesn't believe in the U.S. Constitution, argues that gendered bathrooms are "oppressive" and a "problem." He supports empowering people with the freedom to heed nature's call without having to sort themselves into different rooms based on their genitalia, and was willing to starve himself toward that end.

April 26 came without any progress on the gender-neutral bathroom issue, and Moses followed through with his threat to go on a hunger strike. That evening, he posted a now-restricted YouTube video where he says he's "sweating" because he "hadn't eaten" all day. But he promised to forge ahead with the hunger strike nonetheless.

Thanks to Blair Moses, UMD students will be seeing more signs like this.

Then suddenly, the very next day, UMD Chancellor Lendley Black sent out a campus-wide e-mail announcing that the school would essentially cave in to Moses' demands. The e-mail promises two gender neutral bathrooms in all new campus buildings and the installation of two gender-neutral bathrooms in the university's already-existing student center.

So did the school cave largely because they couldn't stand the thought of Moses enduring additional food-deprived, sweaty nights? UMD's Campus Reform blog reports that the chancellor's chief of staff, contacted after the campus-wide e-mail was sent, denied knowledge of Moses' hunger strike. When presented with evidence, the chief of staff acknowledged the strike but refused to offer further comment.

The sequence of events, however, suggests the timing of the chancellor's e-mail was no mere coincidence. Years into the future, when female UMD students enjoy the freedom to relieve themselves in the same room as their male colleagues, they'll have the brave efforts of Blair Moses to thank.

I fully support this idea. There's not enough people doing it and it shouldn't be that way. I do hope that they can incorporate this as soon as possible.

The truth of the matter is even trans gendered people have male or female genitals so they can go to the appropriate restroom. Will all the restrooms be changed or is this just an addition to the male and female restrooms because it sounds like there were already gender neutral restrooms and he wants more of them.

The reality is men and women should have seperate restrooms because it opens up a lot of possible problems and I'm sure there will be problems.

Why should trans gender folks have their own special restroom? at a cost of how much to the taxpayers? should we break down every group in the country and give them their own bathroom?

This is more liberal socialist ignorance and this hunger strike guy is an admitted supporter of a racist group that calls for the killing of white babies let him starve, would the world be worse off without this racist supporter? you can bet 90% of the country would say no the world wouldn't miss him.

If a kkk supporter was pushing this issue do you think anyone would accomodate their wishes? nope and they shouldn't because support for hate groups only keeps these groups alive. Anyone considering this creep a good guy or sees anything positive in supporting a horrible hate group really needs to check their priorities.

This is why liberalism is dying out because they are so radical and out of the mainstream in their views that nobody wants anything to do with them except maybe the president but folks have had it with this ignorance.

Oppressive? lol wow I've heard it all now because we should have male and female restrooms so what is next? when I was in the army we had male and female barracks so now we will have gender neutral barracks? gender neutral voting polls? gender neutral church? gender neutral movies? just ignorant.

OK, I followed this story first hand as I know all of the parties involved and consider Mr. Moses a friend (though I am twice his age).  The issue WAS for transgendered people, but not just for them.  As a father I do not like to take my daughter to the men's room, nor can I go with her to the women's room.  There are plenty of disabled adults who need assistance in the bathroom.  All of the folks were for whom the bathroom issue was undertaken.

All the University did, and all Blair was asking for was to CHANGE THE F-ING SIGNS ON THE SINGLE STALL BATHROOMS.  Seriously, if there is a 1 stall bathroom for women right next to a 1 stall bathroom for men, why not just make both of them open?  And yes, as the University builds new buildings it will make some bathrooms in them open for everyone.  Big fracken deal.

I know this kid pretty well, and he can talk circles around all of you chuckleheads.  He is bright, articulate, loyal, and passionate.  He will likely never use any of these bathrooms, he did it for other people.

Seriously?!? Differing opinions are cool, dumb ones... not so much. I demand free tuition or I'm starving myself to death - hear that Mr. Loh? I mean as if tuition hasn't climbed enough, let's add superfluous bathrooms to the expenses.  Better yet, make that free tuition AND straight As. Which admissions employee is kicking themselves in the ass for this one?

UMD is full of the ill-informed, unfocused, hyperbolic activist type.  I'm guessing he took a freshman cultural studies course and got a little carried away.  It's a phase that he'll hopefully grow out of by his junior year.

I expect the comments here to be stupid, but I'm wondering if the writer of the article had any idea at all why this is actually an important issue?

Not everyone conforms to the gender binary-- trans people, intersex people, genderqueer people-- lots of people can face problems in public places when forced into a restroom that doesn't correspond to how they identify.  It can be a minor annoyance, or it can lead to violence and hate crimes.  It's happened, and will continue to happen, until gender-neutral restrooms become common policy.

I am assuming these are single use bathrooms that the user locks. If so, then this is a no brainer, those should all be neutral. Only one person uses it at a time, who cares whether they are male or female.

I get it. Moses is standing up for many people here. Compassion is something you need to learn people. It's sad to see people stick up for oppression and bashing Moses just shows your ignorance and stupidity! Way to go, Moses! You just solved a huge problem for many people. Everyone deserves the right to privacy in the bathroom. Period!

Before giving Moses any credibility (or additional press attention), lets get a full accounting of any government 'assistance' he's used during his lifetime.

It's hard to tell if this story is rooted in ignorance or in fear, but I'll assume the former.

People who are transgender or gender non-conforming (or merely suspected of it) can face threats and violence in public restrooms. Is it really so unthinkable that the university offer safe spaces for people? The sneering tone of this rather thoughtless piece is especially unfortunate considering how closely it follows on the heels of the publication's transphobic reporting on CeCe McDonald.

For more information about the need for gender neutral restroom options, please see the Transgender Law Center's Safe Bathroom Access Campaign, here: http://transgenderlawcenter.or...

I have never commented on any kind of story like this on the internet before, but I can't keep quiet on this one.  This is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard in my life!  This Moses guy is completely off his rocker.  It is absurd to think that someone would feel oppressed because they are confined to a specific public bathroom based on their genitalia.  All this "equality" or oppression non-sense is going way too far!  He must just want to watch girls pee or something because his arguments make no sense.

Liberalismisamentaldisease
Liberalismisamentaldisease

Oppressive? why isn't it oppressive when gay folks want to change the definition of marriage from between a man and a woman to anything goes? so transgender folks want a restroom that they can call their own? well straight folks want marriage to be their own especially since the legal and religious definition of marriage is between a man and a woman.

Why not have civil unions that gay couples can call their own? transgender folks need to get out from under the oppression of gender specific restrooms so gay couples should want to get out from under that oppressive institution we call marriage.

This wouldn't have been so bad if a transgender person was leading the charge but a racist that supports a violent and vile group like the black panthers is sickening.

Whatever

Transgender people think their problems will be solved by trying to be the opposite gender but they're actually crazy and should find another solution than bitching about bathrooms.

It isn't an important issue because it affects so few. In fact it creates more devisiveness as a minority segment gets granted special privileges. That isn't equality bro.

Decievious Leroy Johnston Jr.

Yes, because as we all know, "bathroom privacy" is the most pressing problem in America today.  Unfortunately, Moses' "Compassion" is going to cost us tax payers.  But then on the other hand, Moses' education is probably also paid for by us tax payers (you know, the "evil" white man).

Oh! Here we go again! Another shining example of the "Love it or leave it" campaign. Yes, let's reduce everything to the lowest common denominator, shall we? And, why Iran or Somalia? Why suggest some overly hot and parched failed state? There are other options. Perhaps you could suggest Canada or Northern Europe since it's nearly summer, or maybe even Australia? You know I've never been but I hear New Zealand is nice too. To me it seems the polite thing to do. Besides, those nations might be more amenable to co-ed bathroom facilities.

Seriously, he's a silly college kid. Eventually he will get over himself and find himself too busy trying to earn a living. Hopefully, DLR you will get over the fact that you seem to be very, very threatened by every person with brown skin who appears in the articles on this site.

Lastly, to steal from one of my betters: "The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about." DLR, if you really want him to go away, ignore him.

Decievious Leroy Johnston Jr.
Decievious Leroy Johnston Jr.

No, he won't get over himself and be too busy trying to earn a living.  Because stupid liberals like you enable this type of behavior.  He'll eventually drop out of school claiming that he was "oppressed" by the "white man", he will go on to knock up 9 women, who will eventually go on welfare, and because he will not be able to find a job because he refuses to work anywhere that does not offer "gender neutral" toilets, he will claim that he has a disability and live on social security (that he did not pay into) for the rest of his life.

I know VERY well how these type of people operate.  I have a question for you.  Why do you liberals think that certain people are "entitled" to everything?  Last I heard, America was founded on hard work by immigrants who came from around the world to assimilate and create a truly free culture.  Look at what we have now.  What fucking "Freedoms" do we have in this country, unless you are a minority who sucks the teet off of the government?  If you are a black woman who has never worked a day in her life, she is "entitled" to welfare because she shits out an illegitimate baby every 9 months because she can't close her fucking legs.  But if a white guy who has worked his whole adult life paying taxes suddenly finds himself unemployed, and when the unemployment runs out, his white ass is out on the streets.  There is no "Welfare" for him.  No free housing.  No free food.  No free health care.  NOTHING.  The only people who are "oppressed" in modern-day America are working class white men.

If Mr. Moses wants unisex toilets all over the UMD campus, then he should just build them himself.  But because he is too lazy to do it, and expects tax payers to fit the bill, and expects white male construction workers to do the job for him because he is "oppressed", he can just fucking LEAVE.  If you don't like America and what it was founded upon, FUCKING LEAVE.  And that means you Brian!

Also, this country was founded on the slaughter of the indigenous, after manipulating them...  It'd be like me 'founding' my homestead by walking into yours and giving you and your family smallpox and then just saying everything you owned was mine.Don't give me that hard work bullshit.  I suppose genocide isn't all that 'easy' though...

Wow. Sadly, you have reduced all of your thinking to stereotypes and name calling. When did I ever say anyone is entitled to anything? Can you prove that Moses won't graduate from college?--also I didn't realize "every" black woman "shits" out nine kids and goes on welfare. Something tells me you live a long way from any black people (and reality). I don't know if you have visited a college, but this is what some kids do. Some are nuttier than others and this kid is pretty nutty. Regardless of race, it's the same mindset with different labels and cliques.

Leroy, you can't live a life based upon assumptions because at the very least it is intellectually dishonest. As for white men being oppressed as far as I can tell white men still earn the the highest wages, own the most businesses, own the most property, and are disproportionately represented in local, state, and federal government. If you do not find yourself in that group then, frankly, it is your own fault and scapegoating people won't help. I did quite well for myself regardless of what you perceive to the be evils of the minorities in the post-Civil Rights Act world.

Also, I have plenty of freedoms. I can choose to go to church or not. I can go fishing on the weekends, borrow money at a reasonable rate, purchase a house or a cabin, a car, start a new business, get divorced, re-marry, and I can even publish crap online that is against the government or opposing viewpoints and provided I don't threaten the life of anyone important I am largely ignored. And, that is just a few. No one is oppressing me. Ironically, it sounds like you are the one who is so unhappy that you should leave. It doesn't have to be Somalia or Iran. I've traveled--there are some nice places out there.

Also, as for your "welfare" comments if a person man who is white needs assistance they can get it. I have family who live in section 8 housing and have been on food stamps, and they are as white as they get. Now if you would like to present evidence to prove otherwise, feel free. We can attempt a civil discussion.

As for the founding principles this country was founded for the purposes of white, landing-owning men who didn't want to pay taxes to a government overseas and worship in another man's church. They were the only people who could vote in 1787. If you were a non land-owning man, woman, or person of color then you had fewer rights. So, are you saying that is what you want? A return to founding "principles"? Furthermore, the genius of the founders was they realized that their "principles" in some cases may be considered "barbarous" as Thomas Jefferson put it. I really encourage you to actually read the Constitution and focus on the Amendments from #11 on. You may find them enlightening. Perhaps read the correspondences of Jefferson and Adams and Madison, etc.

Lastly, as a white male, I am perfectly happy here. I have been provided with a good education and have made a good living for myself--so good that I can now do other things with my time and even give back which I encourage you to do. Because, if you don't like something then get in there and fix it yourself. Writing things online in all capital letters does nothing to fix any sort of problems however cathartic you may find it to be.

Relax, take it easy, and have a good evening, Leroy.

ludwigtr

Maybe mine is a joke wrapped in an assumption, in an effort to be as equally absurd as to show the stupidity in a previous comment that is both racist by nature and offensively small minded for no reason other than to be offensive.
