Catholic school teacher forced to resign after disagreeing with church's gay marriage stance

At St. Joe's, critical thinking is a sin.
In an end-of-the-school-year written self-evaluation, Trish Cameron, a fifth-grade teacher at St. Joseph's Catholic School in Moorhead, was asked whether she supported the Catholic Church's teachings.

Here's how she says she responded: "I do not agree w/ all Church teachings on a personal level but I do not bring my own opinions into our religion classes. We tend to focus on respect and love for one another and living out our call as servants whenever a 'political' topic crops (which it rarely, if ever, does)."

Her response raised red flags with school officials, and Cameron was called in for a meeting. During the meeting, she was asked to shed more light on her 'I do not agree with all Church teachings remark,' and she said, in particular, that she doesn't agree with the church's stance against gay marriage. At the conclusion of the meeting she was asked to submit her resignation.

According to the Fargo Forum, in the days since Cameron submitted her resignation, both she and school officials have sent letters to staff and church families sharing their respective versions of what went down. The letter written by Principal Toby Bierl and Superintendent and church Monsignor Mike Foltz says that because of "an unfortunate circumstance" and the school's "fiduciary responsibility" as a "Catholic-Christian school," Cameron was asked to resign.

For her part, Cameron, an 11-year veteran at St. Joe's, is handling her ouster with equanimity.

"In my honest to goodness heart, I want the interest in this story to build bridges for all the right reasons, not to tear things down," she told the Forum. "I feel like perhaps there is a wave of interest that may need to come and go before I speak about this."

Cardinal Martini of Milano, Italy, was correct: the Roman Catholic Church is more than 200 years behind the time.  It is imperative that people live with reality instead of musing on fantasies. The Roman Catholic Church should lose its tax-exempt status for attempting to force people to vote in any particular way.

Mr. Nienstedt seems to think he is a god; no one has the right to judge another (Matthew 7:1). What a person thinks is private and only during the notorious Inquisition did predatory prelates and preachers pretend they had divine authorization to badger and butcher others. Nienstedt would be far more comfortable in the fifteenth century than he is in the twenty-first century.

Ya, much like if you work for Planned Parenthood, but you openly spoke out against the Abortion when off work.  I'm sure there would be no strife within the workplace right? What about if you were a paid worker for the Democrat party but openly supported Republicans in you private life? How about if you did research for the U of M, but after work you lobbied at the Capital to end funding for that research? All examples attribute to ones "private life", but direct conflict with ones professional life. So what now, should these employers be forced to employ these individuals?

This sounds cruel but I hope Sane Thinker does have kids and they do end up being gay. That would be poetic justice.

I agree Joe. What SOME people are doing in the name of their "religion" is terrible. I stand w/those who love each other and want to marry. These people who decide to change the MN constitution on their version of who can marry who, can be voted out as well. I have no patience for anyone who thinks they can force the opinions, such as this, on anyone.  How's that for MN Nice?

kirk is such a bigot against gay people that he mocked gay teenagers that commited suicide from bullying.  he has actually done that multiple times.   He's typical of the bigot that thinks government should be telling people who and how to love.

The issue here is that the corporation she works for has a set of guidlines, or a mission statement(or in this case a biblical stance) that must be promoted by all of their staff,  If a staff member openly disagrees with what management has decided should be the direction they want the orginazition to go then why shouldn't mangement be allowed to release her.

But she also said that she leaves does not bring her personal beliefs into the classroom. If she is able to keep her personal beliefs out of the classroom then the school has no justification here. Should anyone lose their job because one of their personal beliefs does not align with their boss if they don't bring it into work? I don't think so.

There is nothing clever about this whole situation.  And if it was you being prevented from getting married you too would see it as an anti-marriage amendment.

Kirk, I know you believe yourself to be this completely objective “freethinker” with all the correct angles, but if ever there was a follower on these comment boards, it’s you my friend. You are just like any other “fox news conservative”, less government spending, less government regulation, more government in my personal life, more religion in government.  But hey, at least YOU think you’re clever.

Hey Andy, don't think for yourself.  Listen to "Dr. J"  The "Dr." is his name clearly state he is superior to you.  Therefor you should just follow his mislead and take his word for who I am...

Your understanding of biology is seriously flawed. Just because someone isn't attracted to a member of the opposite sex doesn't mean that their reproductive systems stop working.

"Anti-Marriage Amendment" Is this something new that I have not heard about? Or is it a clever wordplay?
