Deb Thompson finds diamond ring in $4 pair of Goodwill capris, refuses to keep it

Thompson's $4 capris contained an unexpected surprise.

Deb Thompson got a whole lot more than she bargained for when she bought a $3.99 pair of used capris at the Coon Rapids Goodwill store.

Thompson, a 53-year-old Ham Lake resident, took the capris home and tried them on. She reached in the back pocket, felt a strange object, and pulled out what looked to be a diamond ring.

But before she even had the ring appraised, she decided she couldn't keep it. "If it was me, I would be going crazy if I had lost a ring like this," she told the Star Tribune, adding that she'd "love for [the owner] to have a second chance."

KSTP accompanied Thompson when she brought the ring to R.F. Moeller Jewelers in St. Paul. A closer look revealed that the ring is worth between $5,000 and $6,000. That's enough dough to buy a truck-full of capris, but Thompson still can't bring herself to keep it. "I need to find the owner, and I'd love to hear the story of how it got in there," she told KSTP.

Finding the true owner will be difficult -- Goodwill spokeswoman Lisa Ritter told the Strib that the charity doesn't track specific articles of donated clothing.

Nonetheless, Goodwill posted a "lost and found" Facebook thread last Wednesday in hopes of tracking down the owner. You probably won't be surprised to learn that as of this morning there were 337 comments on the thread, with dozens and dozens of them from people who say they lost diamond rings over the years.

Regardless of whether the ring's original owner can be found, you have to admire Thompson for doing all she can to find them. She may not end up with a $5,000 windfall, but she'll certainly take home some good karma.
