As one of four iVillage Hot Dads Contest finalists, Patefield flew to New York for the announcement of the winner on Tuesday's Today show. The first-place prize was an all-expenses-paid trip for four on a Royal Caribbean cruise.
But Patefield will have to content himself with taking his wife and children for a cruise on the St. Croix River this summer -- he was bested for the title of America's Hottest Dad by David George of Dayton, Ohio.
iVillage, which calls itself the largest content-driven online community for women, made no bones about how the judging process worked, characterizing the competition as "a beauty contest." Take that, all you folks who think women are less superficial than men.
Patefield was nominated by his wife of nearly a decade, Rachel. Together, they have a son, Tyler, who attends first grade in Shakopee. They're also raising an adolescent daughter of Rachel's from a previous relationship.
In nominating Marc, Rachel wrote: "I think my husband is HOT, but what really makes him beautiful is the kind of father he is to our kids."
"Marc is step-dad to my daughter Amelia. However, you wouldn't know it as Amelia considers Marc as her dad. I regularly overhear Marc giving Amelia dating advice (playing the protective father role as well) or helping with her algebra homework or singing, 'Call Me Maybe' with her," Rachel added.
But for all his virtues, Marc still didn't have enough to beat out David George, America's Hottest Dad 2012. Here George's picture:
