Rochester Post-Bulletin says Star Tribune "got used" in publishing "ridiculous" eagle story

Is this news? The Post-Bulletin's editor thinks not.
In a blog post published this morning, Rochester Post-Bulletin Managing Editor Jay Furst blasts the Star Tribune for publishing "a ridiculous story" about "a report" of an eagle killed by a wind turbine on the Minnesota-Iowa border.

The story -- "Eagle may have died from wind turbine" -- was written by Josephine Marcotty and ran in print on Saturday. Its last paragraph says "the impact of wind farms on bats and birds is an increasingly controversial topic," adding that "the threat to eagles has been a major stumbling block in the wind project proposed for Goodhue County near Red Wing."

Furst notes that the story -- which he characterizes as being about "an eagle that may or may not have been killed by a wind turbine, which may or may not matter at all to the Goodhue wind project" -- was "aggressively pitched" to the Post-Bulletin by an opponent of the Goodhue turbine project. The Post-Bulletin decided to pass.

Furst's headline pretty much says it all -- "Not all story tips are worth publishing."

"The Strib got used," he concludes.

Right, and perhaps we should also slaughter members of the Sierra Club or tell them to sit and spin because we are going to slaughter all the desert tortoises in Southern California. They filed a lawsuit to block a giant solar power plant in the California desert that they say would harm the imperiled desert tortoise, the golden eagle and other protected wildlife. Google:  Sierra Club, NRDC Sue Feds To Stop Big California Solar Power Project The funny things is, or sad thing depending on how you look at it, this is common thinking among the environmental left.

I believe wind and solar are great, BUT wind and solar will never produce more than 10-20% of Americas energy needs.  I don't care about what future technology advancements you think could be made, it just can't happen anytime in the near future.    Both Solar and Wind are inconsitant in their production, so therefore in order to properly utilize this technology, one needs to collect the energy and store it.  We cant even make a good cellphone battery.  What is the hold up on the coal powered (electric) automobile.  Oh ya, it's the battery.  We are quickly learning this.  An example of this is Ener1, parent company of EnerDel - which got $118M form Obama and filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.  Why?  Because they can't make a effective battery. This adaption this technology will also do as the President said on the campaign trail in 08 - “electricity rates will necessarily skyrocket.”  (watch him say it on youtube) I'm sure that will be crushing to our economy.  Perhaps that is what the environmental movement wants...

"I'm not holding any cellphone with internet connection.  I can't afford the service plan..." If only billionaires would buy more of your crappy bumper stickers.  It always amazes me to see stupid poor Republicans like kirk who care more about hating gay people than improving their economic station.   The gap between rich and poor grows massively everytime a Republican is elected President yet stupid idiot bigots like kirk are more concerned with making sure gay people can't get married than making our society more fair.   Mitt Romney pays lower taxes than you and he thinks his taxes should be even lower, it amazes me there are actually poor people as stupid as you that agree with him.  Hopefully the Supreme Court will get rid of Obamacare and the Republicans can slash Medicare so you can die from poverty. You really think the Koch brothers are spending billions cause they want to make your life better you poor idiot?  What is Romney promising the billionaires funding his campaign?   What would you do for a billion dollars?  It won't be good for America or poor losers like you kirk but at least you will know Mitt hates gay people almost as much as you do.  Vote for the rich asshole who thinks rich assholes don't have it sweet enough already.

Again, comprehension appears to fails within the mind that is so cluster f*cked with liberal ideology. Ludwigtr, I said "BATTERY" not processor speed, memory size or frequency, chipset, bus speed, etc. I said "battery". Now which rich liberal in the house can afford one of them coal powered cars with the insufficient batteries that hold enough energy to get you nowhere.  Besides Ludwigtr, I'm not holding any cellphone with internet connection.  I can't afford the service plan...

Ya know, I was starting to get sick of fools like yourself saying things like that in an effort to discredit what I say.  So guess what champ, I just deleted the website link from my profile.  (check it!) Did I just take your petty talking point away? Now what you got?

A tool of the right? HAHA! Hopefully you don't actually believe that... Otherwise I have to say someone SURELY is a tool, and it isn't the strib.

Mark, Kirk doesn't really have any opinions.  If you click on his name it takes you to a late 90's-looking conservative bumper sticker shopping website. Kirk isn't a real commenter, he is just a businessman trying to get clicks to his page so he can sell bumper stickers. Pay no attention to him.

The Strib didn't get suckered, the Strib is actively a tool of the Right, especially its editorial pages. The Strib consistently supports Republicans such as Norm Coleman and Scott Walker, it consistently repeats national right-wing talking points without question, and its editorials consistently take the authoritarian side of any issue. If the Post-Bulletin turned down an "aggresively pitched" right wing story, look for right-wing retribution to follow.

The "eagles are killed by wind turbines" meme is about used up.  The STrib got suckered.  There is video of pro-coal activists collecting roadkill and laying it around wind turbines  This fits right in with the whole "Green is Not Green" meme being played by coal and petroleum interests.  The larger strategy is to create doubt and obfuscate, to play for time, to maximize short-term profit with no thought to national energy security over the long term.  Just as we see in the increasingly ludicrous campaign to distract from Global Warming/Climate Change.  Good for the Rochester paper.  Looks like they have some actual editors running the place, as opposed to the press-release re-writers at the STrib. There is new technology being developed out there that eliminates the large fan-blade turbine design for wind power.  It's having a hard time getting financing to get to market however, as a direct result of all the short-term, anti-renewables campaigns.  Once natural gas is not artificially cheap, and when the long-term costs of fracking pile up high enough that they can no longer be ignored, we're going to be sorry we've neglected investment in favor of short-term speculation.

The "petroleum interests" is a "green job".   did you not see the classification by the Bureau of Labor Statistics which says just that? Hey BTW,  what does your "scooter" run on, "hope and change".

*yawn* I wonder if manufacturing controversy is considered a green job. If so, Issa wins.

My mom is a diehard Republican, as are all her friends. All through the '90s and well up until Bush's reelection she was adamantly anti wind turbine. The reasons changed as often as Rush scratched his ass, but all alt energy was evil, period. Then suddenly it wasn't. The science didn't change, just the talking points. But mostly Kirk, I'd like to ask you what your views are because after I edited out all your Obama bashing, you really didn't seem to be saying anything. Are you for or against wind turbines? Or are you a Shale Republican, willing to destroy the environment for a few gallons more?
