I believe wind and solar are great, BUT wind and solar will never produce more than 10-20% of Americas energy needs. I don't care about what future technology advancements you think could be made, it just can't happen anytime in the near future. Both Solar and Wind are inconsitant in their production, so therefore in order to properly utilize this technology, one needs to collect the energy and store it. We cant even make a good cellphone battery. What is the hold up on the coal powered (electric) automobile. Oh ya, it's the battery. We are quickly learning this. An example of this is Ener1, parent company of EnerDel - which got $118M form Obama and filed for bankruptcy earlier this year. Why? Because they can't make a effective battery. This adaption this technology will also do as the President said on the campaign trail in 08 - “electricity rates will necessarily skyrocket.” (watch him say it on youtube) I'm sure that will be crushing to our economy. Perhaps that is what the environmental movement wants...

The Strib didn't get suckered, the Strib is actively a tool of the Right, especially its editorial pages. The Strib consistently supports Republicans such as Norm Coleman and Scott Walker, it consistently repeats national right-wing talking points without question, and its editorials consistently take the authoritarian side of any issue. If the Post-Bulletin turned down an "aggresively pitched" right wing story, look for right-wing retribution to follow.

The "eagles are killed by wind turbines" meme is about used up. The STrib got suckered. There is video of pro-coal activists collecting roadkill and laying it around wind turbines This fits right in with the whole "Green is Not Green" meme being played by coal and petroleum interests. The larger strategy is to create doubt and obfuscate, to play for time, to maximize short-term profit with no thought to national energy security over the long term. Just as we see in the increasingly ludicrous campaign to distract from Global Warming/Climate Change. Good for the Rochester paper. Looks like they have some actual editors running the place, as opposed to the press-release re-writers at the STrib. There is new technology being developed out there that eliminates the large fan-blade turbine design for wind power. It's having a hard time getting financing to get to market however, as a direct result of all the short-term, anti-renewables campaigns. Once natural gas is not artificially cheap, and when the long-term costs of fracking pile up high enough that they can no longer be ignored, we're going to be sorry we've neglected investment in favor of short-term speculation.

My mom is a diehard Republican, as are all her friends. All through the '90s and well up until Bush's reelection she was adamantly anti wind turbine. The reasons changed as often as Rush scratched his ass, but all alt energy was evil, period. Then suddenly it wasn't. The science didn't change, just the talking points. But mostly Kirk, I'd like to ask you what your views are because after I edited out all your Obama bashing, you really didn't seem to be saying anything. Are you for or against wind turbines? Or are you a Shale Republican, willing to destroy the environment for a few gallons more?
