Chip Cravaack: Taxpayers are paying more than $1,000 a month for his 2011 Chevy Equinox

Cravaack's fiscal discipline only extends so far.
Chip Cravaack has signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, the 'no tax increases ever for any reason' manifesto put together by anti-tax advocate Grover Norquist.

But there is apparently at least one tax increase Cravaack, an embattled first-term U.S. Representative for northeastern Minnesota's 8th congressional district, is alright with.

According to a Think Progress analysis of the House of Representatives' official Statement of Disbursements, Cravaack is charging taxpayers more than $1,000 a month to pay the lease on his 2011 Chevy Equinox, a crossover SUV with all-wheel drive.

Think Progress honed in on the personal vehicle expenditures for seven Tea Party-affiliated freshman Republican Representatives. The report notes that while "there is nothing illegal about the practice of using taxpayer money to lease personal-use cars, [it] smacks of hypocrisy for Tea Partiers [who] promised to 'lead by example' when it comes to deficit reduction."

Cravaack's vehicle of choice.

By that standard, Cravaack's hypocrisy is unsurpassed. In the past year and a half, he's spent $25,581 in public money on cars -- more than any of the seven Tea Party freshman Think Progress subjected to close scrutiny.

Many political observers believe Cravaack is a vulnerable target for his DFL challengers in the historically left-leaning 8th, but a fundraising report released yesterday indicates he has a substantial fundraising lead over his opponents.

According to the report, at the end of last month, Cravaack had almost $900,000, compared to just $259,000 for former DFL state Senator Sen. Tarryl Clark. Clark is the favorite to defeat her two Democratic primary opponents, former Duluth City Councilor Jeff Anderson and former state Rep. Rick Nolan.

"Democrats tried to regulate Wall Street harder" - "Obama isn't a tyrant. He can't do everything. I notice you never get mad at the Republicans you pathetic liar."  You'll be saying that recycled shit until 2016 and nothing will have changed except: More people will be living in poverty, Wallstreet will have siphoned off more of the middle classes earnings and savings, more war, more corruption, more impunity for the criminal elements that brought on the 2008 crash and more collusion with our elected officials whom benefit on that insider information.

You've posted zero facts Carl.   It's just weird crazy ranting.  Your first post is just about killing Osama doesn't matter and Obamacare will be corrupt someday.   Your second post is all about how you watch Bill Moyers cause you are so smart. Just because you say party puppets doesn't make your nonsense true. Democrats tried to regulate Wall Street harder, Republicans and conservative Dems did everything they could to block it. Obama created the consumer protection board and tried to put Elizabeth Warren in charge of it. Republicans blocked him. Obama isn't a tyrant. He can't do everything. I notice you never get mad at the Republicans you pathetic liar.

LOL, I wholeheartedly believe your intentions are drenched in stockholm syndrome. Know what that is?  Four years of Bush and I bet all you did was whine and complain, but 4 years of the same policies and all you can do is defend your false prophet.  You are nothing but a War apologist, a political relativist and a pseudo-intellectual. Don't like it when someone challenges your baseless beliefs? I love how you party loyalists throw around "fox news" and "MSNBC" like it's some fucking propganda competition, who watches that tripe anyways? I listen to programs like Bill Moyers, who actually tries to inform the public, ever listen? I bet you wouldn't be able to handle it when he brings on guests who do nothing but criticize the obama administration! They must be trying to elect MITT ROMNEY! OH DEAR!!! When all you do is focus on the Party Puppets you tend not to focus on policies, institutional reform, tax reform, trade deals, commerce, transportation, banking reform, etc. (which if you haven't notice effect each individual day in and day out). But, I get it Dr. J, you are a simpleton whom can only focus on two things, why Obama HAS to win and why republicans are oh so evil, I get it, it's like an addiction for you. I challenge you to paste one of my "fox news" facts and debunk it? Care to give it a try?

Carl, none of your jokes are funny.  You speak only in ranting and made up Fox News "facts".   You are a liar who is too cowardly to admit you are a proud Republican.   It's always funny when idiot liars like you claim to be an Independent and then spend your time attacking every Liberal that posts.  You don't have a single comment critical of Republicans Carl the liar.  I can tell you are a Republican because you are too stupid to even cover your right wing nut job tracks.  At least I don't lie about my beliefs Carl the coward.

Derp Derp Derp "Dawn with zero help from the Republicans Obama has saved GM, killed Bin Laden, and provided healthcare to 40 million people." - it's amazing GM got Bailed out and are still being remored to move their manufacturing to China! (my head just exploded!) - I felt so safe after Brian Williams (head NBC Stenographer) sat down and detailed exactly how American's should lust over killing bad guys, man I felt tough that day. Whew, relieved they just dumped Osuma's body in the ocean, my guess he's still frozen.....and that healthcare? Since it hasn't even been implemented, that 40 million you speak of is non-existent and when the major insurance industries get ahold of that market share (i.e. United Health, BCBS, etc) we can only pray for them not to withhold payments, create a paper bureaucracy, all the while denying your basic health claim to make profit for the board and CEO.  But, then again I don't live in reality, we're NOT in multiple proxy wars in the middle east, the CIA is NOT dropping predator drone missiles on weddings/funerals in; yemen, pakistan, somalia, afghanistan, libya.  The banks are not living under a umbrella of impunity and outright protection from criminal prosecution, the economy is doing GREAT and we can look forward to another 4 years of change we have a really really hard time thinking will EVER come. Hi Dr. J! Love you!

Why in the fuck does it cost this asshole $1000/month to drive a Chevy Equinox?  Is it a top-secret crime fighting Equinox?  Was it engineered by Knight Industries?  Chip Cravaack sounds like a made-up name.  Chip Cravaack: a young loner on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless, the powerless, in a world of criminals who operate above the law.

Dawn with zero help from the Republicans Obama has saved GM, killed Bin Laden, and provided healthcare to 40 million people.  Obama ended don't ask don't tell and lowered your taxes.  He has improved the lives of countless people.  You will find very few Presidents who have accomplished as much as Obama in his first term.  The Dems aren't perfect but how many major US cities has Obama destroyed via stupidty?   Obama appointed Craig Fugate as head of FEMA, ever heard of him?  Of course not because he is an expert on disaster management with lots of experience. Before becoming head of FEMA he was head of Florida's FEMA where he got lots of experience dealing with disasters.   Bush and the Republicans put Michael Brown in charge of FEMA.   Before being put in charge of FEMA, Mr. Brown was in charge of IAHA.  A disaster agency?  Nope, the International Arabian Horse Association.  By the way, his tenure as President of the IAHA was marred with scandal and lawsuits and he was forced to resign.  No wonder Bush was so confident in putting the lives of Americans in his hands.   At least he gave Bush a lot money which is more important than experience and being good at your job.  There is a major difference in the parties Dawn, I bet if you were ever stuck in New Orleans staring at a Category 5 hurricane you would be praying Obama was in charge.

Didn't Tea Party con man run on a throw out the bums platform?   So I'd say Craavack being a big phony hypocrite is the story.   You know that about Oberstar because its public record.  He doesn't hide from it.  He isn't a hypnocrite.  Craavack ran on a Washington is the problem platform.  Now less than 2 years later he is a pig at the trough billing taxpayers to ride around in style.

i agree with many of your points BUT I am quite disillusioned with the dem's. I have voted democrat since I was first given that privilege but i believe both parties are far too invested in suckling off of the big money teat (right) and the tax payer teat (left) rather than doing what's good for the people and our failing democracy.

Your comment should have been directed at Rupar. Blatantly obvious media bias for even doing this story.
