Regarding our coverage of the Nizzel George tragedy and his family

Categories: City Pages
While out of town over the weekend, I was dismayed to watch my inbox fill up with criticism of our coverage of the Nizzel George tragedy.

When city officials made statements linking Nizzel's death to his home environment, we decided that posting about the public records of significant adults in his life was relevant to the story. Race played absolutely no role in our coverage.

However, in a section of one post that has since been edited out, I used inappropriately inflammatory language. That was a mistake, and I'm sorry. I didn't mean to use that language in a derogatory way, but obviously demonstrated poor judgment in my choice of both topics and words. I apologize first and foremost to Nizzel's family, and also to all readers who were offended.

The death of a child is one of the worst things that can happen. I extend my deepest condolences to Nizzel's family and all who are grieving his death. May he rest in peace.
