  • Marsenior Pede Johnson, the 38-year-old arrested for allegedly stabbing two Minneapolis Park Police officers earlier this week, has been charged with two counts of second-degree attempted murder.

One of the officers shot Johnson during the altercation to protect his partner, police say, sending the suspect to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment. Officer James Huber, who shot Johnson, was stabbed in the chest, but the knife didn't penetrate his armor. His partner, Officer Katherine Hammes, was brought to the hospital that night with a stab wound to the chest and lacerations to the back of her head.

Here's how it happened, according to the complaint:

On Tuesday night around 11:30 p.m., Johnson called 911 to claim he'd been robbed of $300 at knife point, and said he would meet the officers near Minnehaha Creek, where the robbery occurred.

The police officers arrived at the location to find Johnson standing near a walking bridge, waiving down the squad, and seemingly favoring his right side. When the officers stepped out of their car, they heard Johnson say he had been robbed by three men.

Johnson continued walking closer to Huber, one of his hands concealed in his pocket. The officers ordered Johnson to show his hands, but he ignored them. When he got too close, Huber tried to push him away, but Johnson produced a knife from his pocket and thrust it toward the officer, striking him in the chest.

Johnson then turned toward Hammes, and "flailed his arms wildly" while running in her direction with the knife. Hammes ducked, and Johnson plunged the knife at her, striking her in the neck and knocking her over. When Johnson prepared to stab her again, her partner drew his weapon and fired three times.

After being arrested, Johnson told police officers, "I wanted to hurt some cops."
