Pastor Denyes on Leisner: "He seemed to be a very happy man."

Michael Leisner likely suffered a heart attack in his car before he was found dead on Saturday, said pastor Dwight Denyes of Minneapolis' Emmanuel Christian Center. Leisner's funeral will take place at Emmanuel this week.

According to Denyes, Leisner brought two of his teenage children to a tennis court and was sitting in his car while they played. After about a half-hour on the courts, his children returned to the car to find their father unresponsive.

While Leisner wasn't a member of Emmanuel Christian Center, pastor Denyes said he, his wife, and their children -- one adult and three teenagers --  would occasionally attend services there.

"I didn't know Mike that well -- we're one of two churches that he and his family attended -- but on the limited occasions I saw Mike he seemed to be very much a devoted father to his four children, and very much devoted to his wife," Denyes said.

Denyes didn't realize that a recent video of Leisner lighting fire to a box of Cheerios outside General Mills' headquarters in protest of the company's support for same-sex marriage was an internet sensation "until the final week of his life."

"I didn't know that side of him," Denyes said. "I think we all, as human beings, we're not one-dimensional people, we're multifaceted. In my limited interactions with him he seemed to be a very nice person, [but] unfortunately the videos are how many will remember him."

Denyes, lead pastor at Emmanuel for six years, said Leisner's family wants Michael's funeral service to remain a private affair.

"I understand there's a human-interest side or a political side, but I'm a pastor dealing with a grieving family," he said. "He died unexpectedly. He loved his kids, his kids loved him, he loved his wife, she loved him. Those things are not unusual."

Mike left this world the same way he went through life; “With both guns blazing!” - Leaving a clear path for everyone to follow. Mike knew that God hated sin, but loved sinners, and made a way for them through Jesus Christ to find eternal life. Mike lived his convictions right to the end and is now in the glorious presence of the Lord! - something no unrepentant sinner will ever experience. All you who think his death is funny - will stand in judgment.

the family is keeping the funeral private. I guess they don't want his casket showered with cheerios!

The great tragedy to this life is that it will also be remembered in the grocery store he frequented where he would constantly argue and nitpick the ads, and demand free groceries. he will be remembered by the taco bell restaraunt he would frequent as the guy who constantly complained about the amount of meat in his tacos. It is a tragedy repeated over and over again in that he hid his hate from those he knew the most intimately, while displaying it openly for the world to see. This weekend, his intimate acquaintances will have to bear the brunt of what the world witnessed; hate, disdain, loathing, and a dissatisfaction with the world that Mike leisner lived in. If there is one thing Mike Leisner achieved before he departed this earth, it was to display exactly what the consequences are of hating, of spewing venom, and of grandstanding in the course of spewing that venom. I had archived his videos, now that the hater is gone, I can dispose of the hate he perpetrated. It went beyond gays. Mike Leisner had a covenant with Humanity, and Humanity will testify that Mike Leisner violated that covenant, and he paid a heavy price. I for one will not miss him on this earth, for he represented everything to me that I abhor in a Human Being. Tragic that this post will sit alongside those of the people who knew Mike Leisner personally and would vouch for the positive he did in their lives.

Huh? the bible clearly has a position on Homosexuality. Jesus however, had nothing to say on the issue. Nor did the 10 comandments for that matter.

A good way not to be remembered for burning a box of cereal on video is not to burn a box of cereal on video.

And God strikes down another one. He is burning in  Hell along with the vice president of Chick-Fil-A.

What's sad is that he most likely died before he was able to grow a heart and use it in conjunction with his brain in order to see that neither the Bible nor Jesus ever said a single word about homosexuality and that it is a made up hatred based on nothing but ignorance and misinformation, hopefully his family and friends will see the error of his ways and choose a different path...

Hate is never funny no matter how Stupid the action.

As much as Michael Leisner sounded like a real piece of shit, Eric Shawn Smith doesn't sound much better.

Did general Mills do him? I smell a cheerio burning - or a conspiratorial kabal of murder.

I say he got off way too easy. Hopefully he has to answer for his foolish, intolerantly ass backward ways. A special shout out to the piece of human excrement who allowed this waste of flesh to not only penetrate but also impregnate her.

As a father and husband and compassionate human being I feel sorrow for his family. Not as much sorrow as i'd feel if he managed to instill that kind of hatred and ignorance into his wife and kids as his legacy.

@errolmcinnes "...it was to display exactly what the consequences are of hating, of spewing venom, and of grandstanding in the course of spewing that venom."  If that's a consequence, then explain why people like Pat Robertson, Peter LaBarbera, Scott Lively, Michael "Savage" Weiner, "Doctor" Laura, Michelle Bachmann, and so forth are still with us.

@baadabingzs I hear you. What a way to be remembered. For the rest of time, if his grandkids randomly googles his name his youtube fame will be the most prominent thing.

@neatjunk So you believe in hell but not in the Bible? MWU-HA-HA-HA-HA... (bring bottled water, it's warm where YOU are going...)

@neatjunk Do I even have to tell you how inappropriate that is, no matter who the guy was?

@Kieron I certainly wish I could answer that question as much as you wish the same. Their words, and their sentiments of separation, and oppression sting me to the core the same they do you. The day will come when we all pass from this life, and the rest of Humanity will answer as to whether or not we kept our covenant with Humanity. Leisner's day of reconciliation came, and I could only comment on Leisner. If there is one purpose served by those you mentioned, it is to constantly remind us that we need to galvanize, and continue to make our voices heard, be it by a few, or by millions.
