Michele Bachmann says Romney is best presidential candidate because Obama is too wealthy [VIDEO]

During an RNC interview with USA Today, Michele Bachmann offered up a whopper of a preposterous statement.

Asked by a reporter how wealthy politicians can relate to the plight of everyday Americans, Michele somehow thought it would make sense to suggest that President Obama's wealth makes it hard for him to understand "the common man." Of course, she forgot to mention that the presidential candidate her own party endorsed, Mitt Romney, is "by a long shot one of the wealthiest self-made men to ever run for president" in the words of New York Magazine.

Here's a transcript of Bachmann's USA Today interview, followed by the raw footage:
Reporter: You've outlined all the problems in the US, in the economy, and then there are those who say, 'How can someone with that kind of vast wealth really connect with the American public, really understand what the plight of the American public is?'

Bachmann: Well, President Obama is extremely wealthy. He and his wife have been wealthy for a number of years, and so I think that's really the issue. President Obama is wealthy, what do, or -- what does he understand about the common man right now?

And I think what people care about is not hating someone for what their assets are -- the American people don't hate President Obama because he's a very wealthy individual. What they care about is how their lives are, would their lives be better? And I think it's very clear under the Romney-Ryan ticket the average Americans' lives [sic] will be much better, they'll have a lot more money to spend in the way that they want, and they'll also have a much more secure future for their children. That's what the American people want, and that's what we'll offer with this new Romney-Ryan ticket.

For those of you who haven't been living under rocks, it goes without saying that the point Michele is trying to make reflects a lot worse upon Mittens than upon Obama. New York Magazine provides this breakdown of their respective personal wealth:
Obama: An Author's Wages

Compared to the average American, Obama is very wealthy. Compared to the other presidential candidates in 2008, though, he was practically an indigent. His senator's salary was $165,200 (he'd earned just $60,000 as a state senator). His wife, Michelle, was the one bringing home the bacon -- before she resigned in May 2007, she earned $317,000 a year as the vice-president for community affairs at the University of Chicago hospitals. Obama's wealth derives from his books, Dreams From My Father and The Audacity of Hope. For Dreams, which didn't become hugely popular until Obama did, he collected a $370,000 advance; in 2006, he pulled down $147,490 in royalties. In 2005 Obama signed a three-book deal with Random House, taking a $1.9 million advance. The first book was Audacity, the second was the children's book Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters, and he still owes another nonfiction title. During the campaign, Obama had a relatively hobolike net worth of $1.3 million.

As president, Obama's salary increased to $374,460 in 2009 and $395,188 in 2010, while his book royalties netted him just over $5 million the first year and a little under $1.4 million the second. Since taking office, the Obamas have also given pretty generously to charity: $329,100 in 2009 and $245,075 in 2010. And that's not counting Obama's $1.4 million Nobel Peace Prize, which he divvied up between ten organizations, including the Clinton Foundation. Going into campaign season 2012, Obama's net worth is now estimated at $7.3 million.

Romney: Daddy Warbucks

Mitt Romney is by a long shot one of the wealthiest self-made men to ever run for president -- John Kerry and John McCain's wealth were largely derived from their wives. Most estimates place his fortune anywhere between $190 million and $250 million, though former Massachusetts State Democrat Party chairman Phil Johnston told MSNBC it was likely closer to $500 million, and Romney's close friend Hugh Hewitt guessed it could be as much as $1 billion. Don't forget that, as a Mormon, Romney would've paid a 10 percent tithe to the Church of Latter-Day Saints -- so all that dough is after taxes and tithing.
And lest anybody have any misconceptions about how Mitt "relates" to working people, please check out Matt Taibbi's devastating new Rolling Stone piece about Romney's professional life, "Greed and Debt: The True Story of Mitt Romney and Bain Capital." Of course, the people who vote for Michele don't take liberal-leaning rags like Rolling Stone seriously, which may be why she's been able to get away with these absurdities for so long.

I did not know that until he became president, Obama was a kept man.  Personally, I do not care about a politician's personal portfolio, just the policies they advocate. Limited government and free markets.  Romney is not perfect, but he is much better than Obama. However, I am voting libertarian.

One thing I noticed about this article is that Obama and his wife earned most of their money as Government employees (minus Obama's book signings and his Nobel award).  So we can say that the wealth that the Obama's have is basically inherited from tax-payer money.  Now, there is nothing wrong with that.  However, Romney's money was earned from private investment.  Make your own conclusions.  Who would be better to lead this nation out of bankruptcy?  Someone who earned money out of investment or someone who earned money out of book signings?

What an impossibly silly person Rep. Bachmann is.  She may actually believe her own baloney, too.

City Pages has become " The Onion " on this one. Michelle never compared the wealth of O'Drama vs. Romney. She was comparing the wealth of any candidate to the average income earner in America. Nice try Onion.. errr... City Pages.

The stupidest and most ignorant woman on the planet (who is married to a self-loathing closeted gay man) said what now?

So Mitt Romney (quite possibly a billionaire) can relate to the middle class better than Obama? (Because he's white, I'm guessing.) Michele really should share with all of us where she buys her "mushrooms". Because she is clearly out of her mind with this incoherent nonsense. Under Romney and Ryan, the middle class will pay more in taxes (the richest people will pay less, of course), and funding for Pell Grants will be cut back dramatically. So how exactly does that help the American people?

“whopper of a preposterous statement”???

Barack’s net wealth is upwards of 11.8 million

This should fully disqualify him from being a respectful representative and qualified to receive the votes of the 99%

Well it’s either that, or the 99%’s mission and arguments are 99% phony.

And the Nobel Peace Prize, what a joke that was.  Remember Adolph Hitler also received one.

@keny1 Perhaps you're so desperate to attack that you resort to shoot-the-messenger instead of actually speaking to Bachmann's comment?  After all, her comments would seem to imply that the richer one is, the more "out of touch" one becomes as a result; thus, Romney is what, 25 times more "out of touch" on Bachmann's scale than is Obama?

Nice attempt at #14 on this list - http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2012/08/the-15-rules-of-web-disruption - but most reasonable people see this stuff for what it is...desperation.

wesmorgan

@keny1 Um...you say "minus Obama's book signings", but his royalties from the books total $6.4 million!  Did you even read the article?  How do you get from that to "basically inherited from taxpayer money"?

It's almost as if you're desperate to find SOME means of attack in order to distract attention from Bachmann's comments.  Nice use of #12 on this list - http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2012/08/the-15-rules-of-web-disruption - but it won't work.

@TheConservativeJerk Adolf Hitler NEVER received the Nobel Peace Prize. He was nominated for one- in 1939 as a protest by Eric Brandt (a Swede) as a demonstrative protest against the nomination of Neville Chamberlaine. It was a mockery.

wesmorgan
wesmorgan

@TheConservativeJerk Actually, Hitler did NOT receive a Nobel Prize.  He was nominated in 1935 for "resolving" the Sudetenland crisis, but the nomination was rejected by the Nobel Committee.

@TheConservativeJerk Hitler won the Noble Peace prize?  Quit typing out your sick fantasies on these comment boards.  You are stupid and poorly informed.   Thank you for being the perfect example of why Republicans are so fucked up and not to be trusted with any responsibility.

@TheConservativeJerk elaborate your statement, because it isn't cogent at all. "This should fully disqualify him from being a respectful representative and qualified to receive the votes of the 99%". A.) The 99% (if a reference to OWS) does not equal the democratic party.B.) if you mean the people of this country, certainly being a millionaire is common among candidates and if you disagree you are saying anyone prior is not a 'respectful rep'. which is taking a pretty extreme stance. Also, wrong wrong wrongity wrong about Hitler. Also, if you think that Obama's being a millionaire in a broken system mean's OWS's arguments are phony, you aren't understanding that OWS doesn't even support him like that.A lot to learn; a perfect representative of an intellectually lazy GOP'er

probrucer
probrucer

@TheConservativeJerk Get your facts straight, dude:

1. "The 99%" (I presume you meant the OWS movement) never had a mission to only vote for poor people. They wanted the richest to stop dodging taxes, and to love their country enough to pay what they owe for the greater good.

2. Hitler never won a Nobel peace prize, although you and yours like to spread that fallacy far and wide so that dimwitted fools who don’t actually check up on FACTS will believe it. He was NOMINATED in 1939 for resolving the Sudetenland crisis, but the Nobel committee rejected his very nomination.

Please stop spreading lies and hatred and learn what you’re talking about, because to people who actually DO know what they’re talking about, your own ‘whoppers’ do nothing but prove your gigantic ignorance.

 @TheConservativeJerk Nice try:

Adolf Hitler was nominated once in 1939. Incredulous though it may seem today, the Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1939, by a member of the Swedish parliament, an E.G.C. Brandt. Apparently though, Brandt never intended the nomination to be taken seriously. Brandt wasto all intents and purposes a dedicated antifascist, and had intended this nomination more as a SATIRIC CRITICISM of the current political debate in Sweden. ( At the time, a number of Swedish parliamentarians had nominated then British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlin for the Nobel Peace Prize, a nomination which Brandt viewed with great skepticism. ) However, Brandt's satirical intentions were not well received at all and the nomination was swiftly withdrawn in a letter dated 1 February 1939.

@learn_how_to_Google  @TheConservativeJerk Adolf was never awarded the Nobel prize, but he should have.  He was a visionary who realized that what you fuck-ass liberals refer to as "diversity" only makes a nation weaker, not stronger.  Take a look at the city of Chicago.  Over 300 people have been killed so far this year (all blacks by blacks).  Baghdad Iraq is a safer city to live in.  It just shows you that slavery should have never been abolished.  When you live in a society where "diversity" reigns supreme, only bad things will result.  Read: Chicago.  Minneapolis is next.  Just you wait.......................................

@TheConservativeJerk I agree.  Someone so much more wealthy than the average American (median household income ~$49,500/yr.; median income per job ~$33,000) should never be considered for President of the United States.
