A Minneapolis Parks Police Officer was stabbed in the upper torso near Minnehaha Creek while investigating a robbery call last night. The female officer, who police say they'll name tomorrow, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for the wound, as well as lacerations to her head.

The officer's partner shot the suspect -- also not yet named -- who was also taken to HCMC last night, and is in stable condition, police say.

Here's how it happened, according to police:

Around 11:20 p.m., the officers were dispatched to investigate a robbery report. The caller said he'd been mugged at knifepoint near Minnehaha Parkway West at Bryant Avenue South by several people.

About 25 minutes later, the officers encountered a man on the south side of the creek. When they approached, he "assaulted and stabbed" the female officer, and her partner took him down with his service weapon. Police say they recovered the knife from the scene.

In a statement, Parks Police Chief Linda Bergstrom said this was her agency's first standalone officer-involved shooting.

"My overwhelming concern is for the injured officer and her family," says Bergstrom. "We are very fortunate that these officers were not more seriously injured or killed."

Update 12:15:

Police now believe the suspect called 911 to lure the officers to the area in "an attempt to harm them," WCCO reports.

According to the report, the man had tried to stab both officers before he was shot. The officer who sustained the stab wound has also been released from HCMC.

Update 1:50:

In a statement, police say the suspect admitted to making a phony 911 call to lure the officers. Police emphasize it was an isolated incident, and poses no threat to the community.

A heroine cop. And whoever shot the prick is a hero too!  A crazy with a knife or a trained martial artist can cover ten or twenty feet before you can react. If they have a weapon and dont do what you tell them to do  shoot them until they no longer are a threat. HANDS are the thing that kill , watch the HANDS always .  If they are hiding their HANDS  from you there is a reason. Just leave it to be that they want to get shot. You have to decide this beforehand.  Decide whether you will be the victim and let the criminal ruin your life and go onto victimize others or  they will be stopped .She deserves a medal . Hard lesson to learn that way , but I wouldnt want to be the next guy that threatens her with a knife!  Godspeed her recovery.
