Stephon Shannon indicted in Nizzel George murder

Nizzel George was killed while sleeping on his grandmother's couch.

Shannon was previously charged with aiding and abetting murder in the first degree, a felony that could carry a maximum sentence of life in prison. The indictment includes four counts: first-degree murder in association with a gang, first-degree murder, and two counts of second-degree murder. If found guilty by a grand jury, the teenager would get life in prison with no chance of parole, reports the Pioneer Press.

Shannon is accused in the June 26 murder of Nizzel George, a young boy shot in the back while sleeping on his grandma's couch in north Minneapolis. In addition to Shannon, witnesses also identified a second suspect, known as "Funny Mo," according to the charges.

In interviews with police, Shannon criticized the officers for not solving the 2011 murder of Juwan Osborne, a.k.a. "Skitz," who Shannon called his brother. Around the neighborhood, Shannon and a group of others had started calling themselves the "Skitz Squad."

Shannon told witnesses that someone had shot up 4501 Camden Avenue North while he was on the couch earlier, and believed the shooter lived at Nizzel's house, according to the complaint. He admitted to going to the house and firing a handgun.
