Think Wal-Mart is the low price leader? Think again. It doesn't get any cheaper than Target, according to a new Bloomberg Industries study.

Bloomberg conducts a monthly study where it looks at a 150-item basket -- including food, household items, clothing, and so forth -- and compares the basket price for Targets and Wal-Marts within five miles of each other. For every $100 spent at Target last month, you would've saved 46 cents compared to spending that same $100 at Wal-Mart.

The 46-cent spread is the largest price advantage Target has had over Wal-Mart since Bloomberg began conducting the study two years ago.

Natalie Berg, an analyst with London research firm Planet Retail, provided Bloomberg with some analysis.

"Wal-Mart has been rolling out 88-cent deals and very publicly communicating its ad-match campaign, so it's a real blow that Target has managed to trump them on price," she said.

"When it comes to seasonal, nobody does it better than Target," Berg continued. "This year, they've gone in all guns blazing, getting more aggressive on price and creating a far more compelling in-store environment than Wal-Mart."

Beating Wal-Mart at their own game? That's impressive stuff, Target, though we wonder what trade-offs are involved in the quest for ever-lower prices.

A lot cleaner too! All employees seem to have a full set of teeth at Target....WalMart....not so much!! Better class of shopper too! I still can't figure out where all the "unique" people that go to WalMart live? I never see them any place but WalMart....rather scary indeed!!!

I wonder where they sample this at. I hope they're not solely sampling MN, where there are far fewer walmarts than targets, which affects economies of scale.

It's where we shop for our groceries... Although the meats department is cheaper more times than not at Cub or Wally world...

I knew that. Target offers better quality merchandise and customer service and treats their employees much better. They also givr a great deal back to the community.

@quimby999 True. The difference is quite small, but it is contrary to the common perception that Walmart is significantly less expensive than Target.
