The Onion's "Bachmann Thankful No Americans Died In Sikh Shooting" story dupes dozens

Dear Onion editors: No need to Onion-ize Bachmann's comments. She provides enough material as it is.

Sometimes, you can't make it up, and sometimes, you can.

Yesterday, the Onion published a probably-in-bad-taste story with this headline: "Michele Bachmann Thankful No Americans Died In Sikh Shooting." Believe it or not, some folks took the "report" seriously and seized upon it as another reason to blast Our Favorite Congressperson.

Here's the entirety of the Onion's story:
In response to the shooting death of six Sikh worshippers at a temple in Oak Creek, WI yesterday, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) offered a public expression of her thankfulness that no Americans had been killed in the rampage. "It's a relief and a blessing that not a single American died in this event," Bachmann said of the incident that claimed the lives of six Americans who practice the Sikh faith. "All of us can be grateful for that. Had the gunman targeted a church or synagogue, this violent act could have been much, much worse. There's no telling how many Americans might have died." Bachmann concluded by calling on citizens nationwide to direct all their thoughts and prayers to the family of wounded police lieutenant Brian Murphy, who was shot multiple times while rushing to help victims.
Condemnation of Bachmann's "remarks" followed fiercely and swiftly. Here are the Twitter replies to the Onion's story:

Tricky, reporting on the Onion story and the mistaken responses to it, goes with the headline: "Left, duped by Onion parody, condemns Michele Bachmann for reaction to shooting." That seems a little presumptuous to us. Better would've been: "The Twittersphere is more gullible than you think."

The Onion is having the same problem all satirists are having in today's cartoon political environment.  How the hell do you satirize Michele Bachmann?  No wonder people believed she said something so preposterous and awful.  She's probably said 3 more ignorant and evil things since breakfast this morning.  You can't exaggerate somebody like that, who more or less parodies herself every day.

There is a website called Literally Unbelievalbe  that has people falling for Onion articles and reacting on Facebook.  It's pretty funny.  You think this tricked people you should see how many idiots fell for "Planned Parenthood to open billion dollar abortion megaplex."

Worse part of all this is, if the Onion had not been so quick with this "story" the Bachmann camp quiet likely woul dhave came out with a statement as preposterous as the Onion story.

I've not seen the fake comments, so am assuming it's because she has said so many crazy things that even fake, silly comments would be easily believed due to her history.

The Onion is hilarious.........how could someone read that and think that it was serious????  It's like Saturday Night Live - well aimed, but still satirical!!!

But the thing is, deep down, you would not have been surprised if she had said that.  The Onion's satire is usually well-aimed.

As soon as I saw that headline I knew this would happen.

I am well familiar with The Onion and when someone sent the link to me, even I had to double check the source just to be sure. This is not outside the realm of possibility for her, at all.

I had to do a double take--Is she for real? Then noticed the source and laughed at how spot on they were. Rascals!

She has often said some pretty off the wall careless things it's not hard to think she would feel that way.

Because no-one would doubt she would say something so stupid. Well...except those who vote for her hateful ass and agree with her.
