Thomas Caffall, Texas A&M shooter, was a Michele Bachmann supporter

On Monday, Thomas Caffall opened fire on an officer approaching his College Station, Texas house to serve an eviction notice, killing him. In an ensuing gun battle, a civilian and Caffall himself were shot and killed, bringing the total death toll to three, and four others were left injured.

An examination of Caffall's colorful Facebook page reveals, perhaps unsurprisingly, that the 35-year-old had an obsession with guns, especially ones from the former Soviet bloc. He also had a passion for conservative politics and last year endorsed Michele Bachmann for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.

From the Houston Press:

[By the end of 2010, Caffall] had liked both Bristol and Sarah Palin, pistol-makers Beretta, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, the Tea Party Patriots, and a group battling for repeal of Obamacare. (He later shifted his presidential allegiance to Michelle Bachmann; coincidentally, the cop he killed shared that last name.)...

In 2011 Caffall moved to College Station and his gun fetish kicked into high gear, starting with the purchase of a huge Soviet Red Army carbine. Caffall noted that if he fixed the bayonet, the rifle was almost as tall as he was. He also bought two boxes of ammo and told the world he would be at the firing range as much as he could. He later lovingly burnished the stock of this rifle with pine tar and used the finished product as his profile pic.

Last June, Caffall proudly showed off another new purchase: a Czech assault rifle.

For such a red-ass patriot, he sure seemed to have a thing for Commie weaponry. And then there was his love of George Orwell. He quoted the ardently socialist Brit twice: "In a time of universal deceit -- telling the truth is a revolutionary act," and more ominously, "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."
After news broke that Caffall was responsible for the third mass shooting in the United States in the last month, the Huffington Post got some reaction from his family.
[Linda] Weaver, his mother, said she had been estranged from her son over the past several months. She said he had not visited her after she became seriously ill.

"We are just devastated," Weaver said. "He's been very deeply troubled."

She added that she was horrified at the loss of life. "If you're going to commit suicide, why take all these other people with you?" she said.

In an interview with KPRC, a local television station, Caffall's stepfather, Richard Weaver, said Caffall was a "ticking time bomb" who quit his job nine months ago and vowed never to work again.

"He was crazy as hell," Weaver said. "At one point, we were afraid that he was going to come up here and do something to his mother and me."
His fondness for Michele Bachmann aside, Caffall's tale is another tragic example of how the mixture of guns and craziness can lead to horrific consequences.

Hitler managed to turn an entire nation to hatred. This hatred spurred his psychopaths, not to shot and kill two in College Station, Texas, but to torture and kill more than six million Jews. Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Sean Hannity and yes, Michelle Bachmann are all demagogues of the lowest order in that they inflame passions through hatred and mistrust. They are all around us. We are inundated with them daily. So yes - Michelle Bachmann is very dangerous. Hatred fosters hatred which fosters violence as witnessed time and time again by the KKK, the Skinheads and Aryan brotherhood, the bombing in Oklahoma City and on and on and on… And that, Pamela, has much, much to do with the price of “tea in China.”

Who doesn't like Michelle Bachman, George Orwell, and guns, in no particular order?!?!? They embarrass us, enlighten us, and shoot us if we speak ill of Michelle Bachman

Do you think you can end an article entitled "Shooter was a Michele Bachman supporter"  with a sentence beginning "His fondness for Michele Bachmann aside", and purport to be objective? Get a clue, sophist.

It's A&M...I am confident every Aggie is a Bachmann supporter. Ad Hoc.

What's that got to do with the tea in China? He may have liked Micky Mouse too...

The fact that the City Pages are trying to group together "fucking crazy murder" and "Michelle Bachmann" is, forgive my politically incorrectness, retarded. There are THOUSANDS of Bachmann supporters out there, while I'm not one of them, I'm not stupid enough to believe that this man went on a rampage because he supported Michelle Bachmann and George Orwell. You suck, today, City Pages.

Exactly. Bachmann, while I don't care for her, didn't put the gun in his hand and whisper in his ear what to do with it.

And to clarify, I am a conservative but also think Bachmann is a bit out there. The point I'm making is why is there an incessant need to find anyone to blame other then the shooters? Has our society become one so lacking in accountability that we are incapable of just putting the responsibility of once actions on themselves?

At the expense of being accused of blood libel, I am going to withhold any comments about Caffall and the tea party.

The mentioning about Bachman is about as relevant as stating James Holmes liked the Joker or the Columbine shooters liked Marilyn Manson

What a shock that he liked Bachmann, it's about time we start being honest about these nutjobs and the fact that they get their world view from the nutjobs in congress, specifically the GOP...

He probably liked Cheeseburgers too, so we should stop eating them.

Guns and craziness aren't the best best attributes to put together in the same person.

Why would his mom call his death "suicide", that seems to make it sound like he was intending on dying when what actually happened is that her son was a deranged lunatic who killed people and was shot while doing it....

Not surprising at all. Mark Ames at The Exiled has a new post up about Ayn Rand's hero worship for a sociopath who kidnapped and murdered a 12-year-old girl in the 1920s. Rand considered him to be a "superman."

Like so many other groups before them, the American extreme right is driven to believe that their opponents are less than human and that it is morally acceptable to kill subhumans who think differently than you do.

@NotanIdiot I don't think the article is saying his support of Bachmann is the cause at all. It's simply pointing to the none-too-surprising fact that Bachmann and the Tea Party attract a... unique subgroup of the population that are agitated, gun owning conservatives who would not hesitate to commit violent acts under the right circumstances. Powder-keg anti-government loons.

''This cannot pass. What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing. This will not pass. We will do whatever it takes to make sure this doesn't pass.''

Michele has made a  career of demonizing every gay, Muslim, non white person she can think of.  When is she going to take responsibility for idiotic lies?   This asshole shot a government agent.   Why shouldn't we get mad at fucking assholes like Michele that demonize the government?   When is someone going to hold policians like Michele responsible for their stupid fucking lies.   How many more shootings of Muslims and cops will it take before the right wing cools their crazy rhetoric?   You are a fucking idiot to think Michele is blameless in this.  I'm sure every politician has crazy unstable people that like them however not every politician goes around saying Obama caused the swine flu and The Lion King is making you chilrden gay.    Michele talks like a crazy person which attracts crazy people and riles them up to do crazy shit.

@mark.gisleson  "The American extreme right is driven to believe that their opponents are less than human and that it is morally acceptable to kill subhumans who think differently than you do." ~~ Isn't this exactly what Hitler thought of the Jews, that they were subhuman and filthy and Germany must be cleansed?

@evikjames I love how Mitt the liar is pretending Obama is running a campaign of hate because he won't let people forget Mitt won't release his tax returns.  Obama is a legit campaign, Mitt is just a crybaby that thinks the rules don't apply to him.   Mitt's campaign is making sure  I do hate Mitt Romney.  I hate everything about that draft dodging rich asshole.    I'm so sick of this right wing lying assholes who spread hate on every issue and then pretend its a 2 way street.  Mitt was too cowardly to call out Rush Limbaugh and Michele Bachmann for their evil hateful speech so he can go fuck himself calling Obama hateful.
