MSU-Mankato head football coach Todd Hoffner faces two felony charges after he allegedly shot pornographic videos of his three young children on a university-issued cell phone.

The phone, which Hoffner turned over to the school for repairs earlier this month because it wasn't working properly, contained three video of his children -- ages 9, 8, and 5 -- in various stages of undress, according to a police report. An IT worker who was transferring data from the defective phone to a computer saw the videos, was alarmed, and contacted his supervisor. Eventually, the footage was turned over to the Mankato Police Department, and Hoffner was arrested Tuesday.

From the Mankato Free Press:
A one-minute video created on June 26 showed the three children, one boy and two girls, with their backs to the camera and covered by towels, the complaint said. They drop the towels and turn toward the camera, exposing themselves. The boy allegedly fondles himself and the girls allegedly bend over and expose their anuses to the camera.

A much shorter video showed the girls dancing naked before the boy enters wearing only a football helmet, according to the complaint. The third video, about two minutes long, allegedly shows one of girls being woken at night by a male and told to go to the bathroom. After the girl gets up, the camera focuses in on the back side of her underwear, the complaint said.
Hoffner's attorney, Jim Fleming, said he'll fight the charges, telling reporters yesterday that the videos show nothing more than "private family moments."

Hoffner, 46-years-old and married, posted $40,000 bail and will remain free without conditions until his next hearing, which is scheduled for August 30. He's been charged with one count of using minors in a sexual performance or pornographic work, and one count of possessing child pornography.

Hoffner was escorted off the practice field last Friday and placed on paid administrative leave, meaning the 2009 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference coach of the year will continue to receive his $101,000 salary for the time being.

Mooning the camera is far different, than filming your son fondling himself with your nude daughters in the room exposing themselves to their brother and father. I hope his wife isn't some wimp that stands by her husband to save her "standing" in the community.

Steve - do you often video tape your children spreading and fondling themselves? Those are not "regular, everyday videos".

@citypages Easy on the headline, CP. From the video descriptions in your article, there was no sex involved. Still up for interpretation.

Private family moments? Should not have recorded those "private family moments". Dummy.

I, too, am cautious about convicting this guy of any wrongdoing without seeing the footage... I have a daughter who is almost 8, and she definitely still dances around naked and "moons" her parents.  If she had siblings, I'm sure they would all be doing it.  Is it a little weird that the coach filmed it?  Maybe, maybe not.  Many people video their kids doing goofy things, and this could be just one of those things.  Should he have done it on a university cell phone?  No, that was dumb.  As for the part about waking the girl in the night and then the camera focusing on her backside, it almost sounds to me like he had his phone in his hand and the video feature was accidentally bumped on.  Who HASN'T done that, accidentally filming the floor or the ceiling or whatever?

WHOA fellas. "SEX VIDEOS?" REad the article-there isnt any sort of sex acts going on. On the radio this morning they said it was just regular, everyday videos on the dude's phone. I suppose "innocent until proven guilty" means nothing to you guys? You realize that his entire life probably just got ruined for NO REASON right?

I find it quite terrible that they mentioned that it was his own children. His kids will probably be looked at and treated differently for the rest of their lives. He was a well known coach and I'm sure plenty of people know who his kids are. I would think they'd need some sense of normalcy after the horrible incidents, not to mention the chaos of their father being taken away and the social workers and whatnot questioning them.

Can anyone see any reason the death for child molesters is cruel and unusual? What good will this guy ever be to society? Unfortunately this guy will probably get off easy (no pun intended) while some guy that smokes pot and eats Cheetos (stimiulating the economy) will get the book thrown at him.

I don't know about this.  Anybody have young kids?  When my son was 3 and 4 he thought the funniest thing in the world was to moon the camera.  We've got video that, in the hands of an ambitious prosecutor, would be the end of our family.  Without having see this I would be very cautious about jumping to conclusions.  Especially since this was on the guy's cell phone, which he then took to the IT guy at the school.

Sure, this could be horrible stuff.  But I have growing doubts about a lot of what we hear about.  There's an hysteria that works well to some people's ambitions.  Those bathtub pictures every parent used to take of the kids clowning around are now being used to break up families and put people in prison, but they get prosecutors the "feather in the cap" of being "tough on child porn."  Because who could possibly opposing being "tough on child porn?"  I have a family member who is an attorney who represented a guy accused of child porn during a divorce.  It was naked toddlers with washcloths on their heads in the bathtub.  The guy was acquitted, but not before he lost his kids, home, job, and every penny he had.  He pretty much changed his name and left the region, a completely destroyed man, for pictures every family has.

More caution; less credulity in these case.

@swmnguy Sorry, but there is a major difference in taking cutsie pics of your toddler in the tub playing and video taping your 9,8 and 5 yr old, bending over and spreading their butt cheeks... just saying.

@swmnguy From the sounds of it, this was more than a naked in the bathtub thing. I find it hard to believe that a 9 year old boy would want to parade around naked in front of his younger sisters and father, and if he did, I really think the dad should know enough to tell him to put some clothes on.

@roxyharper That's uncalled-for.  If you can't spot the signs of prosecutorial jury tampering through the media, you haven't paid attention to the history of these spectacular "abuse" cases; one of the more famous ones having happened right here in Scott County, starring the notorious Kathleen Morris, who unbelievably still has her job in the Prosecutor's Office.  If you know more about this than the rest of us, you should be giving a statement to the authorities; not cracking wise on a website.

@my2cents Oh, I hear ya'.  I'm a dad myself.  I don't disagree with you.  I'm just saying all we've heard is what the prosecutor has decided to say to the media.  They don't understate their cases early on.  The Google is full of cases of wrongful prosecution and conviction on cases that started out sounding awful, but the cases fell apart.  I want to hear what happens when this guy gets an attorney before I make up my mind.

swmnguy
swmnguy topcommenter

@Roundabout I don't know what happened here either.  I certainly haven't seen the video, and I never should.  I share your opinion that the dad should have told him to put some clothes on.  These kids were older than mine when mine clowned around like this.

I would mention that the only story we've heard so far is from the Prosecution, and they are adversarial advocates with a huge incentive in this matter.  They state the case to make a felony charge stick.

That's not to say something awful hasn't happened; I'm just saying I'd like to hear from somebody other than the prosecutor before leaping to judgment.  There are many cases of the Wal-Mart clerk jumping to conclusions, and they're all worded as luridly as this.  Kathleen Morris in Scott County flagrantly made stuff up and charged things that could not have happened in these three dimensions, if you remember, and she still has her job (if you can believe that).

This is at the very most optimistic, bad judgment on the dad's part.  And it could be a whole lot worse. I just don't think we know that yet.
