A bicyclist hit by a Metro Transit bus Tuesday afternoon near the University of Minnesota is expected to survive, says Minneapolis police spokesman Sgt. Stephen McCarty.

The female biker -- yet to be named -- was heading west down the bike lane on 4th Street SE, and collided with the bus when they both attempted a left turn on 10th Avenue SE, says McCarty.

Based on a preliminary investigation, officers on scene told McCarty "it didn't appear that the driver of the bus was at fault," he says. "Of course, this was all preliminary as of about an hour into it last night."

The driver was partially trapped under the bus before taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. McCarty didn't know the cyclist's condition, but said as of last night she was expected to pull through. "Anytime you're trapped, it's got to be serious."

There are bike lanes on the major streets around Dinkytown, but the heavily trafficked area has proved dangerous for bikers before, and this isn't the first accident. In April 2011, 25-year-old Kimberly Hull was tragically struck and killed by a truck about five blocks away from yesterday's incident.
