Same-sex marriage may be a polarizing issue both here in Minnesota and nationally, but Vikings punter and gay rights advocate Chris Kluwe isn't shy about letting you know where he stands.

Last night, Kluwe said Maryland Delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr. (D-Baltimore County) is "literally an asshole" for writing a letter demanding that Baltimore Ravens ownership silence linebacker and outspoken gay marriage advocate Brendon Ayanbadejo.

"Holy crap. I leave Twitter for a couple hours and I come back to find this garbage?" Kluwe tweeted last night, along with a link to a story about the Burns-Ayanbadejo flap. "This guy [i.e., Burns] is literally an asshole."

Last year, Ayanbadejo wrote a Huffington Post column entitled, "Same Sex Marriages: What's the Big Deal?" He starred in a video for Marylanders for Marriage Equality where he characterizes legalizing gay marriage as "the right thing to do." And in recent days, the 36-year-old UCLA alum gave away two tickets to this weekend's Ravens game as part of a Marylanders for Marriage Equality fundraiser.

The ticket giveaway prompted Burns, a Baptist minister who has been an outspoken gay marriage opponent, to write a letter to Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti describing Ayanbadejo's public support for marriage equality as "inconceivable." (Burns is so adamant about the issue, he said he no longer supports Obama after the president came out as a gay marriage supporter.)

From the Washington Post:
"Many of my constituents and your football supporters are appalled and aghast that a member of the Ravens Football Team would step into this controversial divide and try to sway public opinion one way or the other," Burns wrote... "Many of your fans are opposed to such a view and feel it has no place in a sport that is strictly for pride, entertainment and excitement."

Burns called on the Ravens to "inhibit such expressions from your employee and that he be ordered to cease and desist such injurious actions." He said the linebacker should "concentrate on football and steer clear of dividing the fan base."

[We] reached out to Ravens officials for their reaction to the letter. Team spokesman Patrick Gleason said: "We are aware of the letter. Other than that, we will not have any further comment."
Still steaming over Burns' letter, Kluwe later followed up on his "literally an asshole" tweet with this gem:Ayanbadejo, meanwhile, went with a more measured response:

As Burns proves, bigotry and ignorance comes in all colors.

And creeds.
