Edina's scoreboard makes the Hornets' athletic program seem even stronger than it actually is.

Edina High School has arguably the most storied athletic history in the state. In fact, in 2005, Sports Illustrated named the school's athletic program tops in Minnesota and eighth-best in the entire country.

Since the Hornets have plenty of legitimate championships to celebrate, it's easy to accept that a false claim on the school's football stadium scoreboard is nothing more than an honest mistake.

Edina's scoreboard lists the Hornets as the 1987 conference champions. But in fact, Richfield High School won the Lake Blue conference with a perfect record, including a victory over rival Edina, that year. Richfield ended up losing their only game of that season in the state semifinals.

The scoreboard's false claim was first noticed by former Richfield players, who then informed Richfield Patch.

Lee Herman, a tight end on Richfield's 1987 team, told Patch that the '87 championship "was a very proud part of our tradition and our history in football, and [the Hornets] were such a big rival for us -- to have that piece claimed, we maybe just want a correction."

Herman and his teammates have now received what they desired. Edina Public School communications director Scott Brott told Patch the mistake "was not intentional, but clearly an oversight on our part."

"We are working with a sign company to have the error corrected as soon as possible," Brott continued. "We most certainly did not mean to take anything away from the outstanding accomplishments of the Richfield [High School] team and hope they will accept our apologies."
