About a week ago, Turner returned to St. Paul. She told relatives she was still concerned about her safety, but decided to travel north anyway. Yesterday afternoon, her worst fears tragically became reality -- the aspiring rapper and young mother was shot to death while sitting in an SUV in an East Side alley behind the Pentecostal Church of God. No arrests have yet been made in connection with the incident.
The Star Tribune spoke with Laverne Jackson, Turner's aunt. Jackson said the driver of the SUV Turner was in when she was killed reported seeing "a man wearing a mask" near the vehicle before he exited, but didn't think anything of it at the time.
"She was set up," Jackson said. "How else did they know where she was going to be?"
St. Paul police acknowledge Turner was probably targeted, but spokesman Howie Padilla told reporters investigators don't have a lot of information at the moment.
Cario Turner, Naressa's uncle, said the social media-fueled rumor that Naressa witnessed a murder was false to begin with.
"It's crazy; it started with a rumor on Facebook," Cario Turner told the Strib.
Turner's murder is the 14th in St. Paul in 2012.
